The first airfield at Jijiga was constructed in 1929. An airplane crash at Jijiga in July 1930 involved the eighth or ninth aircraft introduced to Ethiopia; it was the second airplane disaster in the country. The plane was aĀ Fiat AS-1Ā with 85Ā hp engine, a training airplane bought in 1929. The first tests in air pilot training in Ethiopia were passed at the Garad Wiil-Waal Airport by Mishka Babitcheff and Asfaw Ali on 1 and 4 September 1930. By the 1990s, the Garad Wiil-Waal Airport was one of 10 bases of theĀ Ethiopian Air Force. The airport resides at anĀ elevationĀ of 5,413 feet (1,650Ā m) aboveĀ mean sea level. It has oneĀ runwayĀ designated 03/21 with anĀ asphaltĀ surface measuring 2,400 by 45 metres (7,874Ā ft ƗĀ 148Ā ft).

Jigjiga Garad WilWal Airport (HAJJ) This is an airport serving the Somali region and is located in Jigjiga city in Ethiopia. The airport is about 12 km (7 miles) to the east of the city. The airport is named Garad WilWal Airport, after the nineteenth century Somali ruler Garad WilWal.

Basic and straight forward, you show up for your flight, get through security and the ticket desk then you fly. There is nothing more to this airport. The bathrooms are exactly what you would expect for an African country.

First thing first the bathroom by the baggage reclaim area stinks really bad!! they need to shut it down or fix it somehow!! thereā€™s another bathroom that doesnā€™t not smell let people use that one, also they need more than one office for the lost baggageā€™s and a plane tickets it take forever and no one waits people front/before them they just cut off and walk in, and if youā€™re Somali donā€™t come expecting people in the offices speak somali they donā€™t they speak Amharic and little English thatā€™s why Iā€™m writing this English, other than lost languages and our plan from adis to Jigjiga almost crushing on ground! it wasnā€™t too bad experience.
