We went with 5 children, aged 13, 12, 10, 8 and 6 (not all ours!) and had a great outing. The mine tour (not a real mine, but nobody minded) was interesting, and the older children enjoyed it a lot. All the (knowledgeable) talking was a bit too much for the 6 year old. The scratch patch was a huge hit - not only for the interesting semi-precious stones, but also as a sensory experience for the children. They had lots of fun on the playground (though two of the swings risk going into each other). The service at the restaurant was really outstanding, but the food was middling. We ended the day with the pedal carts, which all the kids loved. I especially like the quiet, peaceful atmosphere - in the holiday season a lot of places have a frenetic atmosphere, and this was the polar opposite. I think adults on their own might not enjoy this outing that much (except if they have a genuine interest in and love of semi-precious stones). For parents it is great. The children were happily entertained for hours and learnt a lot, and they were thrilled to bits. They asked when we were coming back again as soon as we walked out.

A very fun idea for a family outing. The tour is informative and well done. There is a restaurant on site that is quite expensive but has a good variety of food. The actual show room is exciting and has jewelry at a reasonable price.

A WOW experience. Staff is very friendly, patient and knowledgeable. They are truly serving, assisting and helping their clients on a service level far above the norm in South Africa. Tour is also very interesting and the guide have a true and genuine love and passion for what he is doing. Beatifull gemstone jewellery. As a Gemstone collector I really enjoyed the day out at Gecko and to see people who truly live and love ther passion. Food was also excellent.

Staff very friendly, guide is passionate and informative. Nice little play area and jumping castle for the kids to play on. My son enjoyed the tour in the 'mine' please note the gemstones are real but it's a make shift mine and not an authentic mine tour. Still lots of fun for the feel when learning about the gemstones.

2 years since our last visit, when our grandson spend a couple of hours collected a large variety of beautiful stones from a large & varied selection. Sadly quality & varied have not been maintained!

Looking for some reasonably priced entertainment for kids during the school holidays and came across this place on Google so we thought we'd give it a try. It was mildly entertaining. The kids enjoyed it, so that's a win in my book. There's a 15 min tour that gives u a little info on certain rocks and gems I thought it could have been a little better. Maybe some videos on mining, maybe a little display of how mining happens. Maybe even just a worksheet for kids to see and hunt for diff gems. But aagh, for 50 rand for the tour I guess you can't expect much. After that the tour leads to a jewelry shop Beautiful lil shop with some pretty jewelry and nice info..nicely done but of course, going there with kids you're not looking to buy jewelry. At the end of the tour the kids got a few free gems which excited them. Then there's a scratch patch, for 60 rand the kids got to fill up a tiny little bucket with gems from a big patch. Biggest bucket was around 150 rand or so and was not really all that big. But the kids had fun choosing their gems and enjoyed the patch the most. There was also a nicely shaded area where you could relax while the kids hunted for gems, and have a meal from their cafe (which we didn't so I can't comment on that). All in all I give it 3 stars coz there was not much more beyond that and I wasn't too impressed by the mine (not a real mine) tour. But the kids had a great day and say they give it 5 stars! Additional info Place is clean, well maintained, nicely secured. Staff are friendly and lovely. Tour guide was a nice guy, friendly too. If, like me, u looking for somewhere where u don't have to pay too much for a day out, id give this one a try!

Had a very wonderful and memorable time for my friend's birthday here πŸ™ŒπŸ» The staff were friendly and all very kind to us. The scratch patch itself was very fun to do, we enjoyed searching for our preferences of which colors and sizes to choose. The pricing for the buckets were decent if you are smart you can get q lot of bang for your buck! I will say the lack of a variety I shapes of stones was a bit saddening for us - most were round or some form of circular gems. Would have liked more shapes and a bigger variety of intreshing colors like some blue greens or yellow gems, some different types or a few rare finds would be great. Preferably it would be nice to have the scratch patch filled up a bit more in terms of quantity gems and stones available to dig around in. None the less we enjoyed it immensely. Personally the food wasn't the best but it was definitely not bad, the price was a little steep for the quality of food but the staff was amazingly kind and accommodated us with a little special birthday wish for our friend. Will definitely visit again with other friends or family.

We had a lovely morning here discovering all about gemstones and how they are mined. The guide was very informative and the simulated mine gave you an idea of what a real one looks like. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The shop is absolutely stunning with the most amazing selection of stones and jewellery available to purchase. There are go carts and a scratch patch for kids to be entertained. I would recommend this lovely venue for a fun and unusual family outing.

We loved the experience. The tour was great and came with a few stones too which is great! The price is very affordable as well. Our kids love the pedal cart area and the scratch patch. My little 5 year old spent quite some time finding "treasure" in anything that was polished in the scratch patch and my 2 year old used it as an amazing sensory experience, feeling and rubbing all the different kinds of crystals and stones. Toilets are very clean. And something weird but cool, the toilet seats are very unique in the woman's bathroom (didnt see the men's) The only complaint I have is that the jumping castle was extremely dirty and the kids play area looks a bit unsafe (but we didn't come for that anyway) Regardless of that, we would definitely come back!

The gemstone store is beautiful and there really is something for everyone. Coffee shop has good quality coffee and delicious meals. The gem scratch patch is a family activity that will create stories and memories (along with the mine tour) There is also a small market on Saturdays, with probably the best and most consistent biltong I've ever tasted. (Biltong warriors) Great Saturday morning activity in Kyalami/Sandton areas

Everything was just lovely. Our tour guide David explained everything so nicely for the kids and adults alike. We had a very nice lunch and the kids had a blast in the scratch patch. The store is beautiful and we went home with beautiful jewellery as well!

Children and adultsΒ alike can spend hours in our large Scratch Patch. There are hundreds of gemstones to select from to create your own little collection. Scratch through a whole patch of stones to find whatever catches for eye or specific types that you may be hunting for! Prices start at R60 a bucket.

Great place to visit and search for stones in the scratch patch and browse all of the beautiful jewelry. Great place for a quiet, relaxing lunch.

The mine tour at Ghecko was very informative and my American family group bought some lovely jewelery as gifts to take home and for their hosts. It's a worthwhile way to spend an hour as a tourist.

The mine was small and does not go deep but very cute and enjoyable experience for the kids. The scratch patch was a bit expensive, but as an overall outing for the kids to keep them busy for a couple hours not too bad as a whole.

  • 4/5 Alex M. 5 years ago on Google
Interesting for the kids. There is a β€œsimulated” mine, which takes you underground. There are various displays in the mine showing typical rock formations. The scratch patch is a hit for kids. They can choose a small bag full of precious stones at their leisure. Worth a visit.
