When you think about it why should you give a 5-star rating for fried chicken? Well this restaurant deserves it! A legend in Surakarta (Solo) and can be crowded. However the service is fast and the staff very friendly. Do not miss it when you are in town

Location : Sukoharjo, Central Java, Indonesia Ayam Goreng Mbah Karto started his journey in Sukoharjo Regency. This place is a simple Javanese restaurant, seen from the main dining room which is a wooden pavilion. Although it looks simple, this restaurant has managed to survive until now. It has been serving its customers since the 1960s. This legendary restaurant is managed by the second generation of the Mbah Karto family. Even though it is managed by the second generation, the taste remains the same as the first generation. Chicken marinated in a container on a wood-fired stove. Previously, free-range chicken was given bacem, garlic, and other spices. After marinated, then fried. It is said that this is the secret to the deliciousness. As a companion to eating fried chicken, there are a variety of chili sauces, including “sambal blondho “and onion sauce. “Sambal Blondho”, which is the mainstay here, as well as Jokowi's favorite dish, is made from the dregs of thick coconut milk or cooked areh. Then mixed with onion sauce. In addition to chili sauce, fresh vegetables, urap vegetables, and white rice are also served. After eating, try traditional beverage such as Beras Kencur, and Es Kunyit Asam. Ayam Goreng Kampung is the mainstay of this restaurant's menu. The deliciousness its came from the selection of chicken and the seasoning. The dish here uses young free-range chicken, approximately 3 months old.

The traditional fried chicken kampong with spicy sambal bawang (garlic sambals) and blondo sambals (coconut presscake). Also serves urap (combining blanched vegetables with a spiced coconut topping). The place is spacious, and often crowded, you must be patient to queue your order.

Delicious fried chicken cooked in traditional way. The chicken is tender, juicy with just the right crispyness. Eaten together with the dark colored Sambal Blondo which tastes sweet and savory, Sambal Bawang for added oomph and sweet soya sauce, and fresh veges. Yummm. I ate 2 pcs of chicken and still wanted more hahah. There’s also a Ketan Tape wrapped in banana leaf which you should try as entree. Delicious! Place is like a traditionap javanese restaurant, nothing fancy and always crowded. My cousin and I spent below Rp. 100k here for 3 pcs of chicken, rice, Ketan Tape and 2 Ice Tea. One of the most recommended place to eat in Solo. Btw it is also one of President Jokowi’s favorite restaurant in town. 4 for improvements in the tableware and cleanliness.

Presiden Jokowi pernah makan di sini. No wonder why many public figures love to eat in here. I really like it too. Why famous restaurant always has no friendly cashier? Still become a mistery. Lol. Pro tips: Come on weekday before lunch time

Top Javanese fried chicken. This is the main outlet of the popular Mbah Karto Tembel Fried Chicken food chain at Jl. Jaksa Agung Raya Suprapto in Gabusan, Jombor, Bendosari District, Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java Province. I and my wife had savory sweet fried chicken with a white rice, boiled vegetable salad (urap), fresh vegetables ("lalap"), iced beras kencur, iced sticky rice tapay and a hot sweet tea. All were perfect, except that the urap was too hot. Inexpensive. A cozy atmosphere in an old but clean Javanese joglo house. Clean toilets and musholla (moslem prayer place). Spacious parking lot for motorbikes and cars. Minuses: no free WiFi; no price list.

One of tastiest fried chicken in town. The place is very authentic, we are feeling the javaneese vibes here through joglo decoration all over the place. Drink Gula Asem is very refreshing. The minus we can not pay using debit or QR here, so definitely bring cash! Location is in Sukoharjo, far away from downtown Solo.

Really like the architecture of restaurant. The resto is wide with several tables and carpet for people to eat. The fried chicken is tender and the sambal (+ onion black sauce) is so appetiting. And don't worry, the price is cheap (approximately half of Jakarta's price)

If you're around you have to eat here. I swear to you this place serve the best traditional fried chicken I've ever had in my life. And that says a lot because friend chicken is my absolute favorite food. The chicken in kinda small but so tasty and tender. The seasoning are seeping throughly in the chicken that makes it so freaking delicious. They have 2 types of sambal, the spicy one and the coconut one which is not spicy at all, its savory and delicious af. Place is small and so crowded but hell I don't care because the food makes up for everything.

Always eat here whenever I visited Solo, because it's in Sukoharjo and quite near distance wise. The menu is simple, just fried chicken, lalap (raw veggies: a mix of sprouts, sliced cucumber, snake beans, lettuce), urap (veggies with seasoning of coconut shavings) and super hot sambal. But all of them mix together well to form one tasty meal. The price is friendly to the wallet too. P.S. pay with cash only

Awesome Chicken and black sambal, this place lives up to President Jokowi’s reviews, very friendly and quick service, and there is a lovely little old lady outside selling Bubur grendul

The chicken is delicious, the sambal is very spicy. You need to be patient because the queue is very long. Meanwhile you can enjoy tahu and tempe goreng while waiting

Still the best Indonesian style fried chicken I have ever tasted till this day! No wonder even the president eats here… it’s just so good, the chicken has good crispy exterior, marinated very well with spices, and moist and tender inside. Eat this with rice, sambal, and this special brown colored paste they have… just perfection. Service is always fast enough even if the place is packed with people and you pay after you eat. Atmosphere wise… not bad, it feels like an old traditional Indonesian house turned into a restaurant, might be a bit hot when packed with people but still worth it! Even if the restaurant has a branch in the city… I would recommend to go this one, the original one. The chicken here is more fresh and they are never out of stock… I once went to the branch in the city and they did not have chicken thigh and head… they only had the breast part.

Tasteful ayam goreng.. Small size, so you need more than a piece

I tried the village-style fried chicken at Mbak Karto, and it was decently tasty, although not exceptionally so. Unfortunately, the rice was a bit too soft for my liking. The place was quite crowded and somewhat hot.

Visiting the place when heavy rain comes. A bit difficult to find a car park, but the parking man always help to find the spots with the hospitality. Very hectic on the holiday season, especially because almost all of the visitor use cars. The chicken taste was so good, savoury enough, and the chicken was so tender, it can be peeled off easily. You might want to order 2 piece as the portion a bit small, since they only use local chicken.

Ayam kampung goreng Mbah Karto Tembel is already well-known & popular among fried "kampung" chicken lovers in Soloraya area . To my opinion , the taste is good , tender , but less delicate due to its seasoning , that less of spices. Fortunately the taste is raised well by its sambal blondo & sambal bawang . Here , in this restaurant or rumah makan , the ambience or atmosphere is really traditional javanese style ! The house that's used as rumah makan is a common-traditional javanese house with the large yard in front . Moreover , the way we eat is also traditional javanese style , which we called as " muluk " that's mean : eat with the bare fingers , without spoon ! Definitely , a bowl of clean water is served for washing our hand . It seems the services , e.g. : how to order , how to serve , eating room arrangements , all are still need improvement in order to be well managed for the customer's convenience . Overall it's nice ! Don't hesitate to try ! ! 👌👌
