The ancient city of Petra, Jordan, is located in a remote valley, nestled among sandstone mountains and cliffs. It was purported to be one of the places where Moses struck a rock and water gushed forth. Later the Nabataeans, an Arab tribe, made it their capital, and during this time it flourished, becoming an important trade center, especially for spices. Noted carvers, the Nabataeans chiseled dwellings, temples, and tombs into the sandstone, which changed color with the shifting sun. In addition, they constructed a water system that allowed for lush gardens and farming. At its height, Petra reportedly had a population of 30,000. The city began to decline, however, as trade routes shifted. A major earthquake in 363 CE caused more difficulty, and after another tremor hit in 551, Petra was gradually abandoned. Although rediscovered in 1912, it was largely ignored by archaeologists until the late 20th century, and many questions remain about the city.

Amazing place to visit in the winter

Petra is absolutely amazing. A unique setting of 2000 year old tombs carved out of the rock.

Jordan has a lot to offer for the visitor and Petra should be in your bucket list!!

To walk through those amazing valleys and see the temple first hand truly humbles you in the the work that was put in so many years ago. And when you're finished there is a great restaurant and the end of the guided tour. I went to the Cave bar as well highly recommend!

Petra - one of the 7 wonders of the world. it's a work of art but the passage to go there is shape by nature.

A must see, bucket list site.

"A piece of Jordan" .. I've spent three months living in Petra, Oum Sayhoon, Wadi Musa, wadi Rum, & little Petra. Various AirBnB, several Hotels, Bedouin Camps, private homes. Etc. I'm guessing, from having spent this time spread out over 2017, 2018, this is someone's idea of a way to get some tourists and give some tours. Probably is ok, likely you'll have a great experience, perhaps it will be a little un-necessarily pricey, or not. It might be an excellent jam packed full experience.
