Hiking the Petra Monastery was the highlight of my day. The impressive facade of The Monastery resembles the Treasury, but it's not nearly as ornate. The hike is a total of about 4 miles from the visitor center. And about 900 steps going uphill from the cafe.

The Monastery stands after a whooping 700 steps walk under the sun in the morning and with some shades on the second part of the climb in the afternoon. While meeting a lot of people on the way up and down it is not crowed. We walked with our 11,13 and 15 years old and it was just fine. The Monastery is an amazing building even though you can only see the outside!!!

Definitely a “Must-do” on your visit to Petra. We had planned to take the back route into the Monastery but it was closed because of heavy rains. I was dreading the long climb up after reading about the 700-900 steps up but it was actually not bad at all. In fact, the walk up to the Place of High Sacrifice the previous day was much harder. Take your time and enjoy the walk!

It’s a one hour hike if you move fast. Did it in 30 mins. I went around 4 pm and there were no-one. I could just sit by myself and marvel at the view. Interesting that one’s all tourists are gone, few bedouins went inside the room and was having a small party :) Tip: Go in the evening and enjoy

Tips: Do the backdoor hike to reach Monastery. It is more scenic and you don't feel too much pain climbing the endless stairs from the front route. There is a FREE shuttle (do not take taxi) from Petra Main Gate to Little Petra. From there, choose to take a 5JD 4WD ride or walk in (About 1 hr) to reach starting point of hike. And from there its another 30-45 mins hike to monastery. The views are amazing along the way.

The Monastery is the next best structure after the Treasury. It’s quite a hike up. I’m in decent shape and I’d call it a moderate + hike. Incredibly enough there are people selling souvenirs and even cold drinks all along the way. You can stop and rest and get something cold to drink. At the top there is a shop that sells snacks and drinks. There are benches and you can sit and admire the view. I’d recommend the hike. Take your time and enjoy the scenery.

I recommend taking the back route so you can start off with the monastery before going to the treasury and avoiding the grueling 800 uphill steps. You can pay for a jeep 4x4 from little Petra to take you to the back entrance to start. After about a moderate 3 miles or so, you’ll start to see the monastery. There’s a nice cafe with food and snacks right there. However, They were charging 1JD to use the toilet. Otherwise, very pleasant and not as chaotic as the treasury.

Absolutely stunning, well worth the hike and distance! So happy we went all the way as it’s breathtaking. You will not regret. Once you get there, there’s a couple of stores for you to take a break, get food, snacks and drinks, and after you can continue with the walk to go right to the top and get an even better panorama view.

To get to the Monastery you have to climb many steps and the road is difficult especially for the fuller people but it is well worth it. Time from base 1 hour per direction, so you need to allocate approximately 3_4 hours for this location

Well. This is not as spectacular as the treasury but I would still visit it for the small hour long trek (easy trekking but not recommended for elders or with disability). The route offers spectacular views if deep gorges. And the result is not bad. The monastery has a cleaner and complete look. The stone color is different. And you can enjoy staring at it from the shop in front.

Absolutely stunning. The hike was worth, the views are fantastic. When i ended up reaching this place there was Hardly any people. Petra is not just the treasury which is 40 mins walk to visitor center, I encourage everyone if possible must visit the Monastery as well, it is worth, it’s is beautiful.

Truly a dream come true to visit here. Plenty of different vantage points around the way to get some unique shots besides the classic ones. The shop located nearby is a wonderful spot to relax and unwind after spending a few hours in the sun.

If you're looking for more adventure in Petra, this hike is for you. The hike is about 8 km (5 miles) round trip and can take about 2-3 hours, depending on your pace. Tips: *Begin your hike to the Monastery as early as possible to avoid crowds and make the most of the cooler morning temperatures. *Bring sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes or boots that provide good traction, as some parts of the trail can be uneven or rocky.

We took the back trail to the Monastery. Loved it. The Monastery is one of Petra's main attractions. It's worth the climb any way you get there. Great photo opportunity. We saw an Insta-girl go through her preparations, get photographed by a friend at a most advantageous position for a few minutes, then leave. You can get a nice overhead view by climbing to the coffee shop.

Signaling the end of Petra is the Monastery, this is quite a long way from the start to get to but it is worth it. Also there are not too many people that make it out this far so it’s not so crowded. We got there and there was still some shade on the right side so it’s a good place to take a quick rest after hiking all the way over. Lots of nice photos spots but we liked the big rock that was a little further away, like 150 meters and took nice photos from there. Amazing architecture and magnificent building!

This is another amazing building of Petra, not as well-known as The Treasury, but about twice the size. It's a challenging walk, up 950 steps, to see The Monastery, and there are many stalls and shops on the way, selling food, drink, and souvenirs. Loads of cats to stroke on the way, too. At the top, aside from The Monastery, there are a few shops selling sandwiches, drinks (including 0% beer, which was nice), and snacks.

After an strenuous hike up Petra's Ad-Deir trail in the intense desert sun, we rounded a bend in the path and suddenly saw it - The Monastery! We were awed by the sheer size, not to mention the intricate columns and sculptures influenced by ancient Greek architecture. The amount of work amount of work required to construct this massive undertaking was overwhelming. We felt the Monastery's grandeur was worth every step and breath to witness as we felt like modern explorers. What a reward and culmination of our trip to Petra!

This is where the journey should begin. The Monastery has a lot of underrated viewpoints unlike The Treasury where they closed some of the hiking trails in order to avoid a lot of tourists. It is recommended to take a photo on the pea shaped rock and there are some higher spots to visit to just be careful going up and down as it was surrounded by stones and rocks around.

Ok, I will give you that the idea of 900 steps is a bit daunting, especially in 25°C+ heat, BUT - MY GODDD, the view is worth it. I took breaks, plenty of them. There were so many stunning spots to enjoy the view, get snap happy, and also to catch your breath. Some of the steps are uneven, but it's not a race so take your time and watch your step. Bring a hat, a bottle of water and wear good shoes - I did the whole day at Petra in walking sandals with no regrets. This is definitely accomplishable by all and I would definitely recommend it!

About 3.5 mile hike up 800-900 steps from the valley, but so worth the effort. The Monetary was built mid-first century AD. There is a back way to get to the Monetary, far less effort and distance to cover, but, you have to have a way to get there. There are donkeys that will be offered, this would be a personal choice, I know they are covered pack animals, but I am not convinced that includes human weight on this type of path.

Totally worth the walk up all the stairs. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and take water and snacks as it’s a long walk from the entrance. It’s about an hour from the treasury without rest stops. We didn’t have time to sit down for a drink and enjoy the view as we were rushed as part of a tour group but have a full day in Petra so you can enjoy the beautiful sights without rushing. Photos include the walk up to and views along the way.

After seeing the treasury, it is a long walk and climb all the way to the Monastery. It is worth visiting, once you reach the point, I felt so relaxed looking at the Monastery. The view On your way to the Monastery is amazing, don't miss it and make sure you visit.

The Monastery gets its name from its use during the Byzantine period, when it was converted into a Christian monastery. The cross-shaped altar that was added to the temple during this period can still be seen today, along with other Christian symbols and motifs that were added to the structure. The Monastery was carved out of the same pink sandstone cliffs that make up the rest of Petra, and is approached via a steep and winding path that leads up the side of a mountain. The facade of the Monastery is impressive, standing at over 45 meters high and adorned with a series of columns, pediments, and other decorative elements. Like many of the structures in Petra, the Monastery was likely used for religious and ceremonial purposes, and may have served as a temple dedicated to a particular deity or as a place of pilgrimage for worshippers. The interior of the Monastery is relatively simple, consisting of a large central chamber and a few smaller rooms that would have been used for various purposes.

You won’t be disappointed- absolute must to walk the 850 steps up for the view. Don’t take a donkey. Once at top there are a couple more vantage points from higher elevations.

Best view of the desert in the complex! I need to warm folks though the it is a steep walk. Not the worst ( the view point of Treasury would be my#1) but challenging for those that don't work out. Take your time and you will be rewarded :)

2 to 4 hours walk from Main Gate. If you go without stopping you can be on the top like 2 to 3hrs maximum. There is resturant on the top. Also, in between Trail you'll find many shops. It is easy Track can be done by walk. Keep a Water bottle or some fruits with you. To keep fresh.

Incredible and absolutely massive. I was able to do the hike 4 1/2 months pregnant and 18M post hip operation without any trouble. Big incline but everything is pretty easy steps and plenty of places to rest along the way. We came for sunset and were one of maybe 10 tourists the entire time, thanks to our local Bedouin guide.

We went early in the morning with no stops on our second day to petra and it was tiring but achievable. Plenty of shoes that sell cold beverages if you need. Less crowded than the treasury. It has a nice cave and you can take beautiful photos. It also has a rock where u can lay down relax and enjoy the view while the treasury didn't have a god viewpoint even though we did the trail up the hills.

The far end of Petra is rewarded with the second largest and most well preserved structure, the monastery. Don’t feel bad if you want to skip this because of the long hike, it’s similar to the treasury but smaller. Also be aware that along the hiking trail there is a lot of donkey and camel poop.

Stunning spot and whilst the hike certainly not easy, it's very achievable by most, and for those that can't walk, there are donkeys. Some of the steps can be a bit slippery. The view itself is amazing, like the Treasury you cannot enter, but you can spend time taking it all in, plus there is a coffee shop nearby. Bring water and cover up as there are certain section that have no shade.

  • 5/5 Alex B. 1 year ago on Google
Not as well preserved as the treasury but it's more away from the crowd so you get some time to just relax and enjoy the view. The hike up to the monastery is also beautiful, highly recommend.
