One of the best place in Assam to walk down the memory lane. Beautifully maintained and clean. The toilets were also clean. Ample space to park was available. Inside the Maidam, it was very peaceful. The place is located 1hr or so from Sivadol/Sivasagar towards east via Dhodar ali. It has a very important aspect in Assam history, it is the place where Ahom Kings and Queens are buried. The only thing missing was a board notifying which burial site is for which King/queen.

A very significant historical place of Assam. It is also known as the Pyramids of Assam and is a UNESCO world Heritage Site. It was a burial site for ancient Ahom kings and generals. The mounds were prepared above the burial site where Kings and royal members were buried with jewellery, and daily essentials. The place is well maintained and has a pleasant atmosphere. You can have a walk around the tombs and visit ancient buildings. There are resting places too. The ticket price is Rs 25 for offline bookings and Rs 20 for online bookings. The place is nearly 30 km from Sivasagar town. It will be better to take a reserved vehicle with you while visiting as few regular vehicles run on the route.

This place is really awesome. You can feel the axom ancient history there. There are more then 2 maidam's are here. Note : Don't climb up on the top of any maidam because it's not allowed their and if you do that, then you may be have to pay something or anything else ( as a fine)

There are four Maidams under the Archeological Survey of India at Charaideo. These are Maidam No.1, No.2, No.3, and No.4. Though Maidams are found in all the districts of Upper Assam, Charaideo, the first capital of the Ahoms was the necropolis of almost all the Ahom Royals. Ahoms traditionally buried their dead. The Maidams are the burial mounds of the Ahom kings, queens, and nobles. The word Maidam is derived from the Thai word Phrang mai-dam or mai-tam. Phrang mai means to put into the grave or to bury, and dam means the spirit of the dead. The exterior façade of the Maidams is hemispherical in shape. A Maidam consists of three major features: a massive vault or chamber, a hemispherical earthen mound covering the chamber with a brick structure (Chow-Chali) over it for annual offerings and an octagonal boundary wall around the base of the mound having an arched gateway on its west.

Charaideo is the sacred burial ground of the Ahom monarchs. Ahoms traditionally buried their dead. The tombs of the Ahom Kings and Queens at Charaideo hillock are comparable to the Pyramids of Egypt. The kings and queens were remains were preserved here with great customs and rituals. Located 30 km from the Sibsagar town towards east and at the foothills of Nagaland, and was the burial Ground for royal members and nobles for long 380 years from 1228 A.D. to 1706 A.D. The place is huge and the landscape is dotted with mounds or Maidams. The Maidams are the burial mounds of the Ahom kings, queens, and nobles. The word Maidam is derived from the Thai word Phrang mai-dam or mai-tam. Phrang mai means to put into the grave or to bury, and dam means the spirit of the dead. Though Maidams are found in all the districts of Upper Assam, Charaideo, the first capital of the Ahoms was the necropolis of almost all the Ahom Royals. The exterior facade of the Maidams is hemispherical in shape. A Maidam consists of three major features: a massive vault or chamber, a hemispherical earthen mound covering the chamber with a brick structure over it and an octagonal boundary wall around the base of the mound having an arched gateway on its west. As per the description by ASI at the site : “THESE LOFTY MAIDAMS ARE THE BURIAL MOUNDS OF THE AHOM KINGS AND NOBLES. THE AHOMS FOLLOWED A UNIQUE MORTUARY PRACTICE TO BURY THEIR DEAD KINGS AND NOBLES IN COFFIN AND AN EARTHEN MOUND OF PYRAMIDAL SHAPE WAS RAISED OVER IT. THESE MAIDANS ARE HEMISPHERICAL IN SHAPES AND VARY IN SIZES DEPENDING UPON THE POWER AND STATUS OF THE BURIED INDIVIDUAL THE HEMISPHERICAL MOUND IS USUALLY BOUNDED BY AN OCTAGONAL ENCLOSURE WALL WITH AN ENTRANCE ON THE WESTERN SIDE AND AT THE TOP OF THE MOUND GENERALLY OCCURS A BRICK BUILT STRUCTURE SOME OF THE BIG MADAMS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH GADADHAR SINGHA (AD 1681 - C6 )RUDRA SINGHA (AD 1696 - 1714) SUPERINTENDENT ARCHEOLOGIST ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA “

Great place to learn about Ahom kingdom and beginnings of Assam history !! Only issue is very less information present at the site !! No boards in English explaining about the structure and who it belongs to !! If you are planning a trip to kaziranga then do take a day out and visit sibsagar and surroundings to understand the beginning of brahmaputra civilization and ahom Dynasty !!

The Charaideo Maidam situated in the district Charaideo of upper Assam is the ancient burial grounds for the AHOM ROYALS who were buried here along with their valuable These grounds also possesses some uniques dome shaped structures which resembles the Egyptian pyramids . Here you will gain a lot of knowledge about the AHOM KINGDOM and about their culture & traditions. You can visit here witb your family and friends and if u try to concentrate then u will feel the past glory and power of the Ahom kings ( but please have respect for this holy ground as it is of great value to the ahom peoples of Assam , don't bring any packed food here and have picnic here because most of the people leave behind their garbage which spoils the beautiful natural environment )

Charaideo was the first capital of the Ahom kingdom in Assam and the Maidam is the sacred burial ground and a place for ancestral Gods of the Ahom Kings. Also known as the Pyramids of Sivasagar in Assam, the site is located on the hills of Charaideo amid the lush green fields. Among 150+ maidams, only 30 maidams are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and the rest are in ruins. The excellent architectural skills of the sculptors and masons on the medieval days are wonderful to look at. The vaults are decorated with floral carvings and with domed chambers. Earthen mounds are heaped upon them making them look like hillocks. On top of each hillock, small pavilions made of brick and stones are set up for visitors to take stroll freely. The octagonal dwarf wall encloses the whole maidam.❤️

Visited on 27 December 2021. Ahom Kingdom (1228-1826) royal maidams are found exclusively at Charaideo. Maidam - King's burial ground. Structurally, a maidam consists of vaults with one or more chambers. The vaults have a domical superstructure that is covered by a hemispherical earthen mound that rises high above the ground with an open pavilion at the peak called chow chali. An octagonal dwarf wall (Thin brick) encloses the entire maidam. This place seems to be part of woods & well maintained by ASI.

the Ahom kingdom established by the first Ahom king Chao Lung Siu-Ka-Pha in 1253.[2] Even though the capital moved to other places over the course of the 600 years of rule, Charaideo remained the symbol of Ahom power. It is now known for its collection of maidams, tumuli or burial mounds of the Ahom kings and Ahom royalty. Before the arrival of Sukaphaa the place was a place of worship for local tribes like Moran, Borahi. Though the capital of the Ahom kingdom moved many times, Charaideo remained the symbolic center. It contains sacred burial grounds of Ahom kings and queens and is also the place of ancestral Gods of the Ahoms. The Ahom kings and Queens were buried after extensive and long royal burial rituals. The tombs Maidam of Ahom kings and queens at Charaideo hillocks resemble the shape of the pyramids and are objects of wonder revealing the excellent architecture and skill of the sculptors and masons of Assam of the medieval days.

Charaideo was the first capital of the Ahom kingdom. It remained as the symbol of Ahom power. It is now known for its collection of burial mounds of the Ahom kings and Ahom royalty. It is very calm and peaceful place to be in. There should be proper maintenance and the place should be preserved else the remaining maidams will be extinct due to earth cutting and other irreparable damages done to the structure.

Charaideo or Che-Rai-Doi (Literally: the shining city on the hills in Ahom language) was the first capital of the Ahom kingdom established by the first Ahom king Chao Lung Siu-Ka-Pha in 1253. Even though the capital moved to other places over the course of the 600 years of rule, Charaideo remained the symbol of Ahom power. It is now known for its collection of 'Maidams' or burial mounds of the Ahom kings and Ahom royalty. Charaideo is a another name of our pride.

It was nice visiting the place. I really loved the scenario over there. But the only thing i didn't like is that there were wrappers and plastics around the place. Responsible are those who visit the place and make it dirty as well as the caretakers. Overall it's a place for you to visit if you are more like a nature lover kindof person. Well, for the couples it's a place to date ??? That's what i have witnessed.
