Awesome find of a place to stop and eat. We had no reservation on a Saturday evening but they managed to squeeze us in for a hour. Glad they did, cold local beer was very tasty and my schnitzel pictured with the pepper sauce was amazing. Wife had the goulash which was tasty and plentiful, she was unable to finish it. Great atmosphere as you would expect for a German restaurant on a Saturday night, loud and busy, just what we wanted. Highly recommend.

Great location on the square. They bring you 0.2lt beers continually, until you place your beer mat on top of your glass. Each time you have a beer, they put a pencil mark on your beer mat, so you can settle up when you leave.

Touristenfalle.

A traditional kölsch pub with rather limited seating. The pub is in a typical Altstadt building, but the interior is held more modern and stylish with authentic carvings in lighter woods. They are a derivative of the top Kölsch brew pub Paeffgen and serve a very similarly tasting high quality Kölsch, which already justifies a walk in during a stroll through the Altstadt. Considering the rather touristy location at the corner of Heumarkt and Altstadt proper, the prices and the food quality are very good. Their Schweinshaxe is much better than the one at other brewpubs such as Früh, Peters, Malzmuehle, Sions, and others. It is very large, not over baked and dry as it is the case in most other places, and still has an extremely crunchy skin (which is often not the case). Other dishes like Schnitzel were large, crunchy, and not fatty. The Currywurst is gigantic, and delicious, too. Definitely a place to go to if you happen to get a table. As one of the younger and therefore less popular brew pubs in the Altstadt, one can get seated faster than in the larger brew pubs nearby in particular as a smaller group. Oh, the bathrooms are small, but modern and clean.

So this place was very popular, lots of people queuing outside. The next day we went to visit when it looked quieter. Walked in through the main door, saw a couple of tables were free, so not too full or busy. Waited 20 seconds after walking in, and an older man working there just said “NO” and hand waved us away, as he abruptly walked off… so we left. Note. All of this happened with 1 minute of walking in.

Amazing food and beer. Despite not speaking German, managed to have a really enjoyable time. Would highly recommend this place as just next to the Christmas market. Had cordon bleu veal ( I think!) super tasty with amble fries and salad so keeping it healthy!! Downstairs toilets ambitious!!

Authentic German cuisine and flowing beer. They keep tabs on your coaster and when you’re finished put the coaster on top of the beers and you get your bill. Cash only

Stares at you in bright orange on the Köln Heumarkt. A narrow, cozy, rustic pub that's well-lit and vibrant even on a grey rainy Monday in November. Very quiet and mellow inside with a good mix of tourists and Germans. Their Kölsch isn’t as good as the best versions in the city but it’s crisp and delicious. €2.30/0.2L in November 2023.

I offer 4 stars because of the interior, it’s old, i like old, these is the idea of the place, but you can renovate to give the old shine. The personal (employees) is very kind, do good their job, they don’t have many food on menu, but what they have taste great. The beer is also very good taste, the glasses for beer are too small.

Feels like an authentic place to eat German food! Nice interior even though a bit old and not much decor. The service was pretty fast, my friend asked for a dish without onion and it turns out there were there and the waitress sent it back to the kitchen to have another dish. The food was tasty so nothing to add on this point. One negative point that we didn’t understand is that you have to pay 50cents to go to the bathroom, we found it odd as it was the first time we saw that in a restaurant. Otherwise, I would recommend to try this place and the food. P.S: they have French menus

Brewery Pfaffen—dang was that fun! First things first: I went there with my partner who’s from NYC and my two best friends from New Zealand and London. We all live in Berlin and got sick and tired of a city filled with grumpy and moody people who all feel like they’re alone in the world and don’t need to mind their surroundings. So we wanted to explore areas where we believed people are fun and friendly, warm and welcoming and made it to the Rhine area. The brewery is such a neat establishment! The front is a small and beautiful facade. The inside has partially colored glass windows and loads of dark wood worked into the whole place—tables, walls, ceiling, bar. There’s loads of neat little accessories like metal poles—to help you keep your balance if you had a Kölsch or two too many—or the “Pfaffen” (sort of a guard/watchman) carved out of wood. In the end we sat down outside in sort of a publicly accessible backyard with a cute little fountain covered by a huge tree spending shade. This was also a plus because walking tours stopped there and we got a little Cologne history lesson for free with our stay. The “Köbes” (waiter) was so friendly, fun and chatty and really made our day! His service wasn’t the best, it took him some time to serve us beers and believe me when I say those 0.2 glasses of Kölsch are empty faster than you think. But he definitely made up for this by being the nicest and funniest waiter we had for a very long time! The food … hm … the food was great! We had the Cordon Bleau, the Ravioli and Spätzle. None of these dishes are the very classics for a Cologne brewery unlike Haxe (grilled pork knuckle) or stuff like this. But the kitchen did an amazing job (except the side salad was drowning in dressing and none of us really touched it…). So much taste and everything on point. Overall it was a really great experience and I can honestly recommend to check out this place for lunch, beers and good times! Prost!

We went there to drink beer, supposedly fresh every day. Money not very well spent. The beer is really nothing special, the food is expensive and not very good (14.90 for a currywurst with far too sweet sauce, the kind you buy in the supermarket); and the local is average at best.

Good atmosphere, good beer interesting choice of customer service - partner got plainly insulted by staff and to top it off you can't pay by card under €20 even though this was not at all made clear from commencement of service. The insult was unwarranted and yes I understand Germans have a shorter humour than Britain's but they also have SOME empathy (or at least you'd think so

I came with backpacks and my dog and wanted to taste beer outside. The waiter drinking beer told me they are closed and didn't feel ashamed in front of all people. He said he isn't responsible for Google or something like that (he didn't speak English but nor German with me), which isn't obviously true as I told him and ask him to change it. I told him it's obvious that he just didn't like me. Then I walked away and found their website from where it was clear that they are open (and no, it wasn't too late, it was like 3 hours before closing hours). I walked back and first asked other people and they said it shouldn't be closed and that it was apparent that he didn't like me. Probably not worth for them but I'll for sure never come back with anyone. I confronted him inside and walked away. Probably my worst experience of this kind ever. Good bye and enjoy the review. A place like this should have higher score than 4.3, they're ruining it for their business. Not run by nice people. I'll come back to Köln to find better and honest places.

Great bar. Sat here for a couple of hours with Kolsch flowing and watching the evening go by. Waiters are very friendly and had a great time. A little hidden gem.

Not a very nice atmosphere. We tried to speak in German but I don’t think they appreciated it (admittedly we are terrible at German but we tried) we were only there for a scheller bier. Tried They then said when we tried to pay it was €20 minimum for card and then point us to a cash machine that charged €4 to take cash out. There are better places very close, go there instead

Wonderful food, stained glass decor wittily evoking the nearby cathedral, and warmth at this old brauhaus with an interesting history. The Haxe and the blood sausage were perfectly cooked, and our waiter was friendly, funny, and partook in the odd Kölsch with us. And the Kölsch just kept in flowing!

We sat down but didn't order anything. Payment only in cash unless you spend at least 25 euro. Come on Brauerei Pfaffen, really?... You should learn from your neighbors and modernize your business a bit... Or face losing clients who prefer to pay by using a credit card

  • 3/5 Samuel García M. 1 year ago on Google
Nice food and ok price. The waiter was drunk, he was sharing rounds with a table next to us, chugging kolsch like he was partying instead of working. We order three times, he forgot we ordered and kept coming back to the table asking what we wanted to eat. The pork nuckle XXL, as the name hints is pretty big, but was really good.

Service war i.O., nichts außergewöhnliches.

We just had a beer here. While washing our hands in the WC (that we had to pay 50 cents for each even though we were patrons of the restaurant), we dropped a piece of paper towel - obviously by accident. Before we could even begin to pick it up, the bathroom attendant literally yelled at us and made a huge scene. She even followed us up the steps continuing to yell at us. It was totally over the top and completely unnecessary. Clearly something is wrong with this woman’s temperament. Do not go here. We definitely will not ever be back. Also editing to add that only women are forced to pay to use the WC here.

Absolutely a terrible atmosphere in this place all run by rude men waiters who think they are above the customers. We arrived having passed it on the street and thought we’d give it a try. We were given a table by the main front entrance and noted a few others at tables. We were there quite a while and no menu was offered or were we asked to buy a drink so we managed to get the waiters attention passing who replied ohhh your eating? Lol. We were given the small traditional beers and not offered any kind of drinks list or food menu so we took a food menu off another table. Eventually they took our order abruptly. I felt odd in this place like they didn’t want our custom. Then a huge group of roaming tourists came in with a loud tour guide shouting about the history of the place and we were drowned out so I asked the main waiter (yes the very rude 1) if we could move tables to the rear dining area. He replied no it’s closed back there (noted it had people at tables already eating at the time).it was open. I must point out he did all he could to avoid any kind of customer service and continued to chat to a man he knew. We were about to get up and leave but we’d had 2 beers and the food was ordered then after about 5 minutes when it suited him he said do you want to move 2 tables down we took the offer and moved ourselves no help from the waiters. The food arrived and was ok and it’s a shame the waiters and man managing this place have no idea how to treat customers and only want to take tourists money as they know they will never return again. Ordering a glass of wine was hilarious they only have 1 wine to offer. At the end another rude waiter took our payment and yes wait for it only cash lol. I paid him and he did all he could to delay giving me my cash change. No payment receipt was offered. As you can imagine their tip was zero. Never again awful place those waiters have no idea. Nice German dinner, with typical stew (burgunderbraten) served with potato knodel. I also had the possibility to taste the pork cordinbleu and this was very nice (personally preferred to the burgunderbraten). The beers were nice and quite light. The menu is quite reduced, with no dessert unluckily. The place was very typical and the service was quite fast.

Suddenly someone started clearing chairs, when he came back we asked and found out that they would close soon (around 7pm) We asked if we could get another round of Kölsch and we got it. Just like the tables next to us. Suddenly they started to close the awnings over our heads. Leaves and flowers fell on us and in our drinks. We were asked to pay. We suddenly no longer understood the world of Cologne. Everyone else was allowed to sit and the umbrellas above them remained open. We made them aware of this and were dealt with in just a few words. I would have understood that if we were drunk, but that was our first beer that night. That was a bad start when we visited colleagues in Cologne. (Original) Schlechtester Service seit Jahren.

🫤 My husband and I went for some coffee and cake. The waiter put 2 small cups of beer on the table without us asking for it. I told him I didn't want beer. "He said in Germany you drink beer". I said I really don't want beer but he continued to insist and left it so I thought he was giving it to us i...
