St.
George's
Church
is
one
of
the
12
major
Romanesque
basilicas
of
Cologne.
During
excavations
in
1927
-
In
1930,
remains
of
older
buildings
were
discovered
under
the
current
nave
and
crossing.
The
first
buildings
on
the
site
south
of
the
Roman
city
wall
were
a
military
street
post
from
the
1st
century
AD.
This
post
was
responsible
for
controlling
the
connecting
road
leading
to
the
south.
The
foundations
were
probably
used
for
the
construction
of
a
Christian
Shrine
in
the
7th
century.
The
church
was
dedicated
to
Caesarius
of
Terracina
and
was
probably
destroyed
during
raids
by
marauding
Normans
in
881
or
882.
At
the
time
of
the
new
construction
of
the
St.
George's
Church
in
the
11th
century,
only
a
ruin
remained.
Just
before
the
liberation
of
Cologne,
on
March
2,
1945,
the
city
was
hit
by
the
last
and
heaviest
bombing
raids
by
the
Royal
Air
Force.
The
St.
George's
Church
was
hit
by
7
direct
hits.
Reconstruction
of
the
church
started
in
1948-1949.
The
pre-war
Baroque
roof
was
not
rebuilt
and
replaced
by
a
simple
hipped
roof.
Furthermore,
it
was
decided
to
restore
the
church
to
its
pre-1930
state
as
much
as
possible
using
the
original
building
materials
of
the
old
St.
George's
Church.
