Sibtainabad Imambara, Hazratganj, Lucknow. The word Imambada refers to a place of mourning. Constructed in the year 1847, by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah for holding Majlis and mourning of Imam Hussain's martyrdom, Imambada Sibtainabad stands majestic amidst the heart of Lucknow city i.e Hazratganj.Picture of Sibtainabad imambara at LucknowOne of the lesser known historical monument of Lucknow, Sibtainabad ka Imambara seems to be a different world altogether situated right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of the posh, elegant, and upmarket Hazratganj. The construction of Sibtainabad ka Imambara was started by Nawab Amjad Ali Shah. It was primarily constructed to hold large mourning sessions in Lucknow in the remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. Later, the entire construction of the Imambara was completed during the reign of Nawab Amjad Ali Shahโ€™s son Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in 1847...

Hidden behind some glitzy shops of modern Hazratganj lies the Sibtainabad Imambara known locally as simply "Maqbara". Built by the last Nawab of Awadh in his father's memory, it uses western influences such as stained glass. Couldn't enter the building but there are no tickets to check it out from the outside. Fascinating to see something built by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah himself.

Sibatainabad Imambarga was constructed in the year 1847, by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah for holding Majlis and mourning of Imam Hussainโ€™s martyrdom, Imambada Sibtainabad stands majestic amidst the heart of Lucknow city i.e Hazratganj. Moreover, it also houses the tomb of King Amjad Ali Shah along with the tomb of one of his grandsons โ€“ Mirza Javed Ali and Wajid Ali Shahโ€™s queen Taj-un Nisa Begum. And hence, this Imambada is also addressed as Maqbara, for it bears the mortal remains of Nawab Amjad Ali Shah. The imambara is also the place of โ€˜Aag Ka Maatamโ€™ which is on 9th day of Moharrum. Sibtainabad Imambada is built in Indo-Islamic structural design. It has two entrance-ways, out of which one opens towards the main hazratganj market while the other faces the complex. On entering through the gateway, one finds a mosque standing tall towards the right side of the rectangular complex. A steps of stairs lead to the elevated portion over which the Imambada is built. The hall of the Imambada is very beautifully adorned with arch-ways while its walls have epic patterns designed on it. InfoCourtesy : SaveOurHeritage

A masterpiece, revived and reclaimed by the Committee from the encroachers. An architectural marvel, conserved by the ASI and is a must visit for those interested in knowing the art of conservation of a lost monument. This majestic monument, in all its grandeur, is a live monument.

Unlike the magnificent Bara Imambara or Shahnajaf Imambara, the Sibtainabad Imambara is one of Lucknow's secret beauties. Rather small and simple in design, it is located in the historic Hazratganj Market in the heart of the city. The market was built by the fourth King of Awadh, Nawab Amjad Ali Shah, who ascended the throne in 1842. Imambara Sibtainabad is under the supervision of Husainabad Trust and you Shia Muslims regularly organise Majalis, Mahfils and Namaz Jamaat during holy month of Ramzan.

Parking and getting there can be an issue as the road is very narrow and difficult to tread for people not familiar with Lucknow traffic and roads. When here try keval's chai and bun makkhan.

Sibtainabad imambada is one of the largest imambada in Lucknow which is in the center of the city in Hazratganj. It has a vast ground which is many times used for wedding and all. This is one of the biggest shia Muslim's property lying in the centre of the city .And outside it you will find a great market of Hazratganj like halwasiya market and lovelane markets which are nearby just a walking distance from it.

It's a quiet place and not too crowded. It is an important imambara in Lucknow but many tourists miss it. If you are interested in visiting imambaras, for whatever reason, this place is a must visit. Even for an architecture enthusiast, it's a beautiful place. You won't get a guide but there will be someone to explain the place. Early evening is the best time to visit this peaceful place
