I am giving one star with a heavy heart. I was visiting family and we were all so excited to come visit the museum. Upon arriving we saw beautiful pieces of work. It was going great. About 10 minutes into our visit we were approached by a museum employee who told us to put our diaper bag on facing forward, they explained it was to keep the works safe from being knocked over. That made sense and we obliged. No problem. However, it would have been helpful if we would’ve been greeted at the front and given that information. But no harm. We carried on (diaper bag facing forward) through the galleries. We entered a long hallway area with paintings hung on either side. My niece (who is 1) was wriggling in my brothers arms. Since we were in a space with nothing that could be knocked over - He set her down and off she went, keep in mind she’s 1…so her run is the equivalent of a quick walk. We were on one side of the gallery and from the other side of the hall we heard booming yelling. It was so loud that it echoed and it was hard to hear what was being shouted. My sister in law took a few steps forward and a man appeared, she said to him “I’m sorry, what was that?”. Again, he yelled “NO RUNNING IN THE GALLERY”. We were too stunned to speak - he was so clearly absolutely furious. My brother scooped up my niece - at this point we were terrified to make another wrong move. It was SO deflating. We left shortly after this encounter because we felt totally unwelcome. I’m not arguing that the gallery should be treated like a race track - what I do think is that there was a more kind way to communicate with us. There were some amazing pieces but the staff at the Museum was incredibly rude and we left very disappointed. I have a fine arts degree, I’ve worked and shown work in galleries. I understand there’s certain etiquette - but I also understand how to communicate with kindness and grace. I hope that the staff, and specifically that employee learn and do better.

100% recommend coming to this art museum! It is FREE and only costs $6 to park. What I like most about this museum is that there is an exhibit for everyone! Everything from Egyptian tombs to traditional paintings to contemporary art and even stunning jewelry and furniture. There is EVERYTHING here! I visited in January and had a fantastic time. I would recommend this place to anyone and plan to bring friends back. This is 100% the best art museum I’ve ever been to. I think it’s even better than the one in D.C. (way less crowded too). There are also tons of clean restrooms and a nice gift shop. You could easily spend 5+ hours here - it’s a spectacular museum. (10th time trying to post this review 🙄)

We went for it first visit and were excited to see works from Matisse, John Singer Sargent. It was wheelchair friendly, high quality art work from a high caliber art museum. It highlighted different artists from the Cubist, Impressionist and The Gilded Age. We will be back, we couldn't complete the museum in one visit. The visit is free, so don't worry about buying tickets. There is a cafe and coat check.

This museum is a hidden gem of Richmond. It has a fantastic collection of Russian decorative art, along with beautiful oil paintings of European and American artists, and can compete in world famous museums. Admission is free. Another plus is its cafe - it has a decent variety of options and the food is very tasty. It’s a must-see museum if you are in the area.

Free arts museum with a lot of interesting pieces. Lots of people are hanging out on the lawn. People even have weddings here. We loved the collection of African and Indigenous art. The Faberge collection was dazzling as well.

What a treat! Great selection of different types of art, there’s definitely something for everyone here. The garden is delightful, very calm, there are some tables for people wanting to work. The staff was extremely nice and accommodating. I recommend leaving any big or heavy bags at the coat room for free, as the staff will ask you to carry them in front of you if you do not. A must-see.

Definitely worth the visit. Some exhibits lacked labeling making it a little curious to how the effort had been made to install but not label the installation? Well spaced exhibits gave plenty of room for guest to enjoy without feeling rush. Very pleasant outdoor spaces.

Impressive museum with collections from various cultures/time periods including Ancient Greek/Roman, African, American, Native American, European, and East/South Asian. However, what made this museum a little more special for me was the Art Deco/Nouveau section which is rarely part of the main galleries of the art museums. General admission is FREE which is great as you can really take your time and see part of the museum and then come back at another time to see the rest. In addition to the permanent collections they also do have ongoing exhibitions (some of them requires you to buy tickets). Sculpture garden is nice to take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee or have a bite at a nice day. Inside the museum masks are optional. Free street parking nearby or $6 museum parking. Overall an excellent experience - thanks everyone contributing the smooth operation of this museum, your work is really appreciated!

This is a wonderful, beautiful, and comprehensive museum covering ancient art from the American Indigenous peoples, to Asia, And Europe. There are several beautiful examples of paintings, sculptures, and metal smithing. There are complimentary charging stations, a full Cafe, multiple restrooms, a research library, and a wonderful gift shop. Parking was easy to find on the street near the museum. Beautiful grounds for small family picnics too!

Great for day trips! Free admission and an expansive collection of art, ranging from special exhibitions to painting, sculpture, interior design, and more! They’ve got a lot going on, enough for two trips, for the art enthusiasts among us.

My favorite sections were the India artifacts and information and the Russian artifacts (the eggs!!) What an awesome museum. Fantastic art pieces throughout as well... I would definitely go back! Only downside was that I felt American and French items were just paintings (tons of horses and abstract) or furniture while other cultures/countries had amazing artifacts, jewelry and paintings.

Absolutely a great place year round! Even though I no longer live in Richmond, I’m still a member of the museum and love the exhibits from around the world that the museum brings in. My most recent visit back to Richmond was specifically for this current exhibit Treasures of Ancient Egypt - Sunken Cities that will be on display until Jan of 2021. I highly recommend bringing family and friends here not just for the special exhibits that come, but to walk and explore the museums wonderful permanent collection. I could spend hours in here on a rainy day! Please visit or even become a member to take advantage of special member events and showings. Nothing better then supporting the arts!

This place is HUGE! With so many different sections that represent different time periods of art you can truly find something that everyone in your family will enjoy looking at. It’s free but be aware you may have to pay for parking.

Love this place. Outstanding museum with great exhibitions. Very clean and organized. Has a Cafe, and a great restaurant in house. The gift shop is large and has a great assortment of museum related items. Don't forget to get outside and enjoy the grounds which has sculptures and other art pieces to enjoy.

Great place to come for some art! Beautiful old building to walk around in and explore all the wings with different types of art. Plus they usually have a special exhibit going on which is always worth checking out. Nice little cafe with some good coffee, various drinks and snacks to eat. The outside patio, garden and fountains on the grounds are great to sit around and relax in. They have a jazz night and various events that bring in the crowds which is a good time if you are looking for something to do. And as you can see from the pictures sometimes you can catch a majestic sunset here.

I love the VMFA. With over 500,000 square feet of exhibition space on a thirteen acre campus, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has so much to offer. Whether your interest is ancient Egyptian art, Cubist paintings or Russian jewelry, this museum has something for everyone. There’s a cafe on the main level with outdoor seating that looks out over a reflection pond and the beautifully landscaped sculpture garden. The museum gift shop is large and full of all sorts of great artsy things. This is easily one of the best museums in the country. And it’s free! There is a parking garage, which does have a fee, but it’s possible to find free on street parking, as long as you don’t mind walking a block or two. I highly recommend a visit to this museum.

This was my first stop during my weekend visit to RVA, and the VMFA could not have been a better introduction to the city. By no means did I cover the entire museum - which is great, because now I have every reason to go back for future exploring. The museum has art from so many different genres (French Modernism, German Modernism, African Art… the list goes on) and artists… They have (several) works from Kehinde Wiley, Salvador Dalí, Henry Matisse, Esther Mahlangu and so so many more. I spent a good bit of my visit in the African Art permanent collection & the ‘Dawoud Bey - Elegy’ exhibition. I was really impressed and in awe with the variety of pieces that the museum has from all over Africa - there were unique pieces from Liberia, Ethiopia, Congo, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Cameroon and so many more. The museum has amazing works both inside and outside — make sure you check out the stunning sculptures and pieces in the gardens.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is the art museum you didn't know you needed. Built in the 1930s, it's emerged as one of the best art museums in the country! Here's why you should visit: 1) Space: It's HUGE. The inside alone will keep you learning for hours. It's several levels and each exhibit is different. 2) Gardens: We went during the pandemic and decided to just do outside activities. The gardens are full of history, architecture and sculptures. There are nooks and benches to sit on and enjoy lunch or a good book. It's very peaceful. 3) Price: It's free making it accessible to all people. This is a must-do when visiting RVA!

I would of given it 5 stars if it wasn't for the gift shop door attendant who didn't want to let me in the gift shop maybe because I was in sweats and had a stroller. I apologize for attempting to stimulate the Richmond economy. Overall my kids and wife loved it and it was a memorable experience.

Great museum! I really liked spending time there. But unfortunately, I only had an hour this time. Security guards were polite unlike some of the ones at DC museums. Parking is free if you parallel park in front of the museum on weekends. But if you can’t find parking spots at the front, you will have to pay $6 to park at the museum parking deck.

Our family had a great time at this wonderful museum! It is a great way to spend 2-3 hours perusing famous fine art (including some priceless Faberge pieces!) In a cool, comfortable setting that gives you plenty to view and enjoy without tiring you out! Their garden sculptures are also great and so is their cafe! Most importantly, all of if is ABSOLUTELY FREE.

Very nice art museum with an excellent selection of art from around the world. Some people will enjoy it more than others, simply because some exhibit rooms are larger than others. For example, I'm not a huge fan of colonial area art and silverware - those areas were large but not that interesting to me, but someone else might enjoy how much of that art there is. My only real complaint is that there didn't seem to be a natural flow to the layout. One wing was closed and another was being used by a temporary exhibit, so that may explain some of it. We had to double back through sections multiple times, and there's instances where, for example, the modern art room opens into the ancient Greek/Roman art and then into Egyptian, then into Renaissance.

An absolutely amazing experience. It was raining so we couldn't enjoy the outdoors. It was so much to see. I would have to come back. Artwork and collections are beautiful. Definitely coming back!! A nice place for a date. Food served for a price the reflect the cost for buying from a museum.

I and a companion visited for our first date. He has been several times before. It was my first experience. And I was beyond blown away! First, parking is on street/paid garage. Your choice. I chose on street and walked a block to the museum. Outside there is seating/tables to have lunch/conversation, a water display and a huuuge grassy area. People/families enjoyed the day on a blanket, reading and relaxing. I'm told they often have movies on the lawn there. Definitely an experience before even entertaining the door! There was a wedding reception in progress on the day we went. So, we actually walked through the museum and witness a beautiful union beginning. They had a wedding singer which we enjoyed as well! The museum was so peaceful and calming to walk through. Somethings always caught your eye! So thought provoking. Because of time, we were unable to walk the entire museum. So I absolutely WILL return!

The staff was friendly & very attentive to my needs and they really go above and beyond to ensure you enjoyed your meal. I can't wait to go back.

I’m such a fan of the VMFA. I have a fond memory of seeing an impressionist exhibit as a high school student here, and it was the first time I realized I enjoyed art. I’m always impressed with the exhibits they manage to secure, and I never leave feeling disappointed. I would recommend getting the membership - it’s just not that expensive and if you see a few exhibits and use their parking garage, the membership easily pays for itself. I went to see an exhibit there last year and was lucky enough to stumble across a fashion show! Loved the energy and the artistry. Check their upcoming events - I feel like they’re always adding something new to the calendar. I wish I had more photos to add…I need to dig some up! It’s a beautiful building and they transform the space to enhance each exhibit.

We came for the Ansel Adams exhibit, and stayed to see parts of the permanent collection. I thought it was really cool.how they integrated more contemporary pieces with historical areas. For example, they have these beautiful native american paintings from the early 2000's juxtaposed next to older native American art and artifacts. The exhibits just keep going, and you could spend days here exploring and enjoying a wide variety of art.

An absolutely BEAUTIFUL museum with amazing art and more! I recently went to see the ' Dirty South' exhibit and it was so cool. They really put allot of thought into creating this and I truly enjoyed it. Not to mention the museum and it's grounds are absolutely beautiful alone. I've been wanting to visit the VMFA for quite some time, and I'm so glad I finally have. I believe I'll be joining as a member now and next visit I'll have to dine upstairs in 'Amuse' for sure. $$$ (if you dine as well)

Could be 5 stars, but I know too many people that work/worked there and spoke of how awful management treats employees. That aside, there are some really interesting exhibits and the space is definitely nice. It's also free, which is nice for students and cute, non-expensive date ideas. Management aside, staff are always nice as well and the museum does collaborate with local colleges, which is good. Definitely worth taking a look around. Visit was 18 May 2022, from NC on business in Richmond the last night of my trip. Three levels of beautiful collections. I think I spent 2 1/2hrs between sculptures on outside and the inside collections. They have just started back their Wednesday Jazz sessions in the evening in the Atrium and I caught the beginning before leaving. I also love Jazz. Area is very nice & safe and you can take in all the wonders of this area. Parking was good. Please go when in area, you won’t be disappointed. If back in area I would bring others to VMFA. Oh, there was no cost, even though I would have paid anyway.

Excellent place to spend quality time with family or significant others. There’s always a cultural event or exposition going on. On weekends they have an event called “Family Day” where you can bring kids to do paintings and other activities. They even give them a “passport” where you can have a stamp for each activity that they completed. And the best part: it’s free, you don’t have to pay. It worth a visit!

Incredible museum. I think you should plan at least half a day if not more here for the sheer amount of exhibits and content within. From Fabergé to the Tokaido Road exhibit (my personal favorite), I think multiple styles and eras are represented well here, and there is truly something for everyone. Clean, well laid out, and great location in town as well. A must if you are in the Richmond area!

They have an excellent collection including Faberge, a great deal of impressionists, and ancient civilizations artifacts. The exhibits that come through are always high quality collections. There are two dining facilities. One is more of a cafe and the other is more a kin to fine dining. I look forward to the VMFA Happy Hour returning and buying a bottle of wine to enjoy with friends in the lawn.

I LOVED this museum! We drove down from Northern Virginia for a change from Washington, DC. This museum has a lot of collections. They may be small, but they are mighty. We really enjoyed our afternoon, seeing the whole museum. The cafe is so pleasant. Enclosed by glass on 2 sides, it looks out on the gardens, sculpture, stepped waterfalls, and people enjoying the sunny day. Right next door is the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. You can literally park at one but walk to both. IF you have the energy. We will go back for that. This museum obviously has some donors with big pockets.

Went for a trip to visit Richmond and saw the VFMA is a great place to visit and it absolutely is! The campus, both indoor and outdoor is very nice. I liked the outdoor sculptures and open space to walk around. There is no much art and history to see and I wish we have had more time but it definitely would take a few days to get through everything and really take in all that you are seeing. I can't wait to go again the next time we are in town.

Most people, when asked, point toward the National Gallery of Art in DC or the Met when referring to the best art museums. In my opinion, the VMFA, though smaller than both museums, has perhaps the best selection of fine arts from a variety of time periods and cultures than both of them. And the best part is: it's totally free and open 365 days a year. Honestly, this museum has no idea being as good as it is. I thought I was in a much more well-known gallery by mistake!

  • 5/5 Naomi M. 3 years ago on Google
VMFA is seriously impressive, and a hidden gem, considering how long as a native Virginian it took me to find out about it (I don't live in Richmond). HUGE and gorgeous building with something for everyone. Amazing ancient collection, baroque, American paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, and some to DIE for art nouveau--make sure to drool over the Tiffany lamps!! The museum has a great deal of extremely impressive pieces from all the most famous names in art. That we have it in VA and it is free is mind boggling. Get thee to the art museum! Thank you VMFA.

I love how you display the exhibits. It is a SHAME you let kids touch the exhibits as Priceless as they are. I personally seen for kids touching the exhibits today which is Tuesday December 29th very disappointed

Great art museum. Free admission (except for special exhibits). I always have a wonderful day when I go here, with never enough time to see as much as I want to.

One of the most beautiful art museums that I've ever visited. I can easily spend the whole day here. There are plenty of exhibits to visit and will take quite some time to get through if you're patient. I felt like it was never ending. I love the space and natural lighting that shines through during the day. It's quite and not as busy during the weekdays. If you like having personal space, I recommend going during the weekdays. The weekends are usually busy. The outside is also a beautiful space to hang out and work. The museum is beautiful inside out! Prior to calling it a day, I sat outside to enjoy some conversations and the weather. It was the perfect way to conclude a long day.

A great art museum to visit! They have everything from paintings and sculptures to pottery and molded silver (I'm not sure of the exact term). Their collection ranges in time periods from ancient Greece to modern day, with everything in between. General admission is free, with an entry fee for special exhibits. Without the special exhibits, that still leaves enough art to spend several days exploring and enjoying everything there is too see. If you live in Richmond and haven't been yet, I highly recommend you take a Saturday to stop by. With a collection as big and varied as this, there is bound to be something you will enjoy!

Besides being FREE...yes, Free 😃👍 this is an amazing museum. Clean, quiet and cool you can leisurely stroll through room after room of mid-century, european, impressionist and wood-makers art expertly put on display. There are chairs and benches in perfect places to sit down and contemplate what the artist was thinking while creating his/her art. Rest assured during our one week in Richmond we'll coming back time and time again to take in every inch of this exquisite museum. 💖💖💖

What a wonderful museum so many different cultures that are very well represented. All covid-19 rules are being followed as well, very clear signs on the floor for giving directions and standing 6 ft apart as well as multiple opportunities to hand sanitize.

Better than I thought. I took 4 kids and they had a blast. Only saw level 2. Seating outside and inside. Greek and Egyptian were our favorite!😎 Level 3 for next time. Some free street parking...$6 garage. Lots of space. And freeeeeeee!!!!

Honestly, I used to love going to this place and would drive from Charlottesville just to see the exhibits with my mom and brother. That was until I saw how they treated their employees, and to be frank I’m so disappointed. Do better, VMFA.

(Translated by Google) I visited because I finished my work early. I was disappointed in a good way. There were few people and I enjoyed it relaxedly because of the corona virus. It's great to see this for free. (Original) 仕事が早く終わったので訪問。いい意味で期待を裏切られました。コロナ禍で人も少なくゆったりと楽しめました。これが無料で見られるのは素晴らしいですね。

This is an amazing place. The curators do a fantastic job of keeping the museum exhibits new and fresh. There always seems to be something new to see each month. Major exhibits like the Tarracata Warriors happens at least twice a year. If you want something to do with your significant other, that's peaceful, enlightening, and a fantastic stimulation to the sense of sight, this is a must stop while in RVA. Bonus: Wednesday mornings at 6am a free workout group called the November project gets together here for really fun workouts.

The museum is nicely partitioned representing art from regions across the world. The sculpture garden has some great works and the latest addition Chloe is exquisite. Planning for a longer stay, the cafe and restaurant is sure to come in handy.

I am New to Richmond. I just moved here from New York. The Virginia museum of fine arts was my first outing as a resident. It was amazing. There is no way to cover it all in one day or even two! There is so much to see. It has so much to offer! I will be going back!

This was great. I plan to go again one day as due to limited time, we weren't able to see everything. The woman at the door we entered was very helpful and gave us guidance so we could choose which way to go first. Loved the exhibits we saw.

  • 5/5 Ilona D. 2 years ago on Google
I enjoy going to this museum and see one or 2 collections at a time. This way it is a fully exquisite experience, because you don't rush through everything. Gardens and sculptures outside are equally beautiful as an art inside. Whenever you come here it is always a peaceful transcending visit.

Many of the galleries are under renovation atm, but I was very excited to see that the renovations were finally finished on the Mellon galleries. Degas, Piccaso, so glad to see them again, as well as many other old favorites. There were some new modern paintings I hadn't seen as well.

The exhibits are definitely why you want to go. $16 for a regular adult. The cafe is big, has floor to ceiling windows, and enough seating. Next time, I'll try the restaurant.l From the cafe you can see sculptures, gardens, and architecture. There is outdoor seating or you can sit on the grass picnic style. However, the customer service was awful. The woman working at the counter was very abrupt and rude with me. I'm a person with disabilities, the non-visible kind. I asked how to get to the entrance to the exhibit after I had purchased my ticket she just waved her hand and said "over there, take the stairs" this place is full of stairs. I have never been to this museum let alone the city before. I got lost as I thought I would with those directions. Luckily, there are people who work on the floor. Once I got to the right place it was a wonderful time. I bought the $5 handheld voice information device. I think it was totally worth it.

This is a beautiful and fascinating place. You can go back a few times and never see it all. Different era's are placed throughout but would like to see more native american art. Free unless you want you to see exhibitions. Gift shop is nice but pricey. A nice Cafe to have a snack or lunch.

What a wonderful museum! I had never heard of this place and I lived in Northern Virginia for almost 20 years. I was just expecting the Faberge Eggs and a few galleries, so I was blown away by the breadth of the collection. There were good examples of every style of art I can think of from ancient Egyptian to Contemporary. I also enjoyed sitting out on the patio with my lunch and watching the water. The staff was friendly and helpful and the grounds were serene and beautiful. I will definitely come back when I am in the area again.

Highly recommend this art museum. To start off, it’s FREE, all I had to pay for was parking which was $5. Definitely worth it. They have such a wide variety of different types of art from all over the world and different time periods. My favorite piece of art was the Fabergé eggs. Really cool to see the different jewels they used to make them.

Amazing art museum in Richmond. Even better that it is completely free! They have a diverse art collections from many eras and multiple geographical regions. It took us 3 hours to attempt to go through every rooms and all 3 floors and that felt rushed! They have their own parking deck which does cost $6, but if you park at the Museum of Culture and History’s parking surface lot right next door, it is only $5 for 4 hours. Definitely recommended!!

This is one of my favorite museums (and I grew up going to the Smithsonian Museums all the time)! I always visit the Faberge exhibit, it is exquisite! The museum also allows and encourages photography, so have fun taking photos! There is also a nice restaurant and cafe if you need food or a pick-me up. And there's plenty of seating in the cafe, but also outside. The grounds of the museum are also worth visiting on their own. There were plenty of people lounging in the grass, working on their laptops in the shade, etc... It looks like the perfect way to spend an afternoon in Richmond.

We were there for the native American film festival. What a wonderful experience. Being able to see the films and interact with producers and ask questions was fantastic. The campus is beautiful, with displays everywhere. It's so interesting

The VMFA had incredible collections from a variety of artists, periods and movements. Typically I have gone on week days and have never seen it very crowded at all. The museum itself is very beautiful and I would recommend taking some time to spend in the outdoor sculpture garden. Many amazing things to see.
