Visit during Flood water opening times to enjoy the view. Park and Other information centre available on either side. Road from NH 45 to Kallanai is also good and gives a pleasant bike ride feeling.

This 2000 year old dam is a beautiful place, and a treat to visit. On visiting the dam, one cannot help wondering how this piece of engineering has managed to survive so many years of wear and Tear. The dam still continues to hold water, and serve the community. Accessibility score: three on five. Wheelchair users can easily reach and visit the dam. It is also quite accessible for persons with blindness.

What I mention about this place is not going to justify it. It’s near Trichi about 15 KM, out in a nice country side surrounding.on the way to the dam you can lots of banana farms, cocoa trees and lush green fields.A 2000 year old structure standing high and tight is a must visit place if you are in or around Tiruchirapalli #Trichi .It will take you away from the life’s of temples & churches . A nice place for a morning stroll or a late afternoon stroll once you are at the spot.If you are travelling with children it’s also a place which can give you & them a break, as there is a nice park with swings and other things to keep kids busy . Enjoy the ambiance I can’t describe it and if you like the place like 👍🏾 the post also.

Kallanai Dam also known as Grand Anicut is approx 2000 years old water structure constructed by Chola dynasty. It is located in Trichy, Tamil Nadu. If you are in Trichy and wanted to come here then you can board the bus for Malaikovil(near Thiruverumbur) and then from there bus to Kallanai. Or you can go directly to Thiruverumbur then board the bus for Kallanai. A variety of fishes are sold there raw and cooked also, you can go and try them, they r very delicious. There are several channels across the Kaveri river and dams are also. There is a small park also to enjoy and one museum is also there near the beach parking area for car. There is also some space where you can take bath in the river so if you want you can bring some extra clothes also.

Kallanai dam is one of the oldest dam in India built by karikalan (Karikala vazhavan). It was constructed on the river Kaveri. That flows through Thanjavur. This dam plays an vital role in supplying water to the nearby villages of Thanjavur. The chola king has the idea of storing the water by constructing a dam.

Very good place to hangout in Trichi. Friend also mentioned it as 'triveni sangamam', the dam distributes the water from cauvery between 3 rivers. It also got a park for kids. Loved this place, specially the strong winds here(not sure if its a daily things). Only problem is that if you are on a 4 wheeler, parking is really difficult on weekends.

One of the ancient monumental places.. Built around 1000 years ago to save and divert cauvery water to different areas for irrigation and many other purposes. History says it was built by Chola king Karikalan. Presently parks, Children playing area, and Parking facilities developed. It has become a tourist destination In the year 1839 Sir Arthur Cotton designed and constructed under sluice across coleroon. Karikalan memorial is built here and history is established here. Good place to visit especially during winter season.

Kallanai dam is a famous tourist attraction near trichy. It is a must visit place if you are in trichy. The kallanai dam is around 15 km from trichy chatram bus stand. Frequent buses are available to kallanai from chatram bus stand and from thiruvaiyaru & thanjavur side also. Apart from dam, a small children park is also available. The dam is beautiful to watch and water is regulated to kaveri & kollidam river. The view of kaveri is amazing to see. For those who like to take bath a small canel is available for bathing. This is used by ladies. It is dangerous to take bath in running river.

After visiting Tanjavur Big Temple at evening time 5.15 P.M, I started and it took 1 hour 30 min to reach Kalana dam by car, The shortcut route took me through small village and canal road. The dam was awesome at late evening. The kaveri river took four different paths and the dam was looking majestic. 😍

A wonderful site to see. Roads to and from where not good. Nothing much for children except for an engineering Marvel built by cholas. Many tourists towards samayapuram are also going through this place and taking rest. Hence, crowdy and not quite peaceful.

Good place with bad maintenance. Located at a distance of only 15 km from Tiruchirapalli, the Kallanai Dam is built across the flowing River Kaveri. It spans over 1079 feet and is over 66 feet wide! This ancient dam was originally constructed about 2000 years ago, and it is the oldest functional water regulator structure in the entire country. It may not have much else to offer, but the mesmerising view is surely going to be worth taking a detour. The dam also serves as an inspiration for modern-day dams due to the excellent engineering behind it. Also known as Grand Anicut, the enormous dam is famous not only because it is pertinent to the living of thousands of households around it, but also because of its unmatched scenic beauty. It is constructed with rough stones, but they have been indigenously supporting the dam's structure for over 200 decades. It is still in an excellent condition and is often frequented by locals for picnics. One finds true peace here, watching the sunset and the overall spectacular view. Various new developments, especially like a park, have also been made for kids. The Kallanai Dam was “[built] during the second century AD by Karikalan, a king of southern India's old Chola Dynasty” and “is also one of the oldest irrigation systems in the world that is still in use” (Agoramoorthy and Hsu, 2008). “The purpose of the dam was to divert the waters of the Kaveri across the fertile Thanjavur delta region for irrigation via canals. Since the English arrived in the eighteenth century, the Kallanai has been tampered with and other hydraulic structures have been added nearby. It is therefore difficult to extrapolate from the current situation into the past to understand the workings of the anicut” (Bijker, 2007). Figure 1 shows the current state of the dam.
