The Brooklyn Museum is one of my favorite museums in NY; you can find a mix of every genre in art. I have been visiting this museum since I moved to NY in 2000, and they constantly have new fun exhibits. My favorite so far was the Frida Kahlo exhibit. So many items she used daily. The exhibition had everything from her makeup, hairbrush, shoes, dresses, hair accessories, paints, books, and it portrays her culture and lifestyle much more than just her art. I also visited this museum as a chaperon with my son's school and saw "The Schenck Houses." The kids had a fantastic time going through the house and finding the hidden objects. The museum guide involved all children and made them feel as if they had traveled in time. It was a great trip. The museum is very clean. The coat Check-in - and check-out were fast and organized. You can spend hours here without getting bored if you enjoy the art. It should be more explicit that General admission is suggested, or pay what you wish. Because at the register, it is not mentioned often, but note General admission does not include access to any ticketed exhibitions,

ON THE MUSEUM’S FIFTH FLOOR, just off yet more solemnly sober portraits of wealthy colonialists, is one of America’s oddest museum features: a heavy sampling of the Brooklyn Museum’s hidden collections and artifacts. It’s some of the stuff that cannot fit on the institution’s walls and display cases, and includes formal art, as well as more mundane objects such as a dozen old-school alarm and wall clocks. The items are professionally lit and arranged but are stacked high to evoke the cramped feelings of a rich uncle’s attic or a warehouse on Indiana Jones’ to-do list. The curators had fun with this space, and it shows!

Went to the Dean's Giants exhibit. Had lunch on the steps from a street vendor and went to artland within the museum for interactive fun with my son.

I went to the exhibition of Monet to Morisot. Highly appreciated the curators that tried to make a collection of the famous artist in Impressiont period to gather in this exhibtion. It is easy to understand the message from the exhibtion. The layout is not complicated. Go with the flow and you could finished this one around 1 hr.

Small but mighty museum. I didn’t get tickets to the timed extra exhibit but it was still worth exploring all the cool pieces that is part of the permanent sections. They have some fantastic pieces. This is easy to get to just off the 2/3 line. This is next to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. I highly recommend this museum. Check it out!

An overall amazing experience. I've been here years ago and I love the fact that everything always change. They provide exhibits on things happening now from amazing artist from all over. A lot of walking will happen and you will also need to present you vaccination card for entry. Make sure you are wearing proper footwear and expect that they are following safety protocols. Absolutely amazing and educating experience. Definitely would recommend taking the trip.

My first time at the Brooklyn Museum. It is smaller than the MET but it is still grand. This museum has well known artists, artifact’s, modern art, and more. They have a restaurant on site as well as a small cafeteria. This museum also has parking available but you may be able to find street parking. Also this museum currently requires you to be masked.

absolutely stunning Dior exhibition! the regular exhibition is also fun but had to admit the Dior was too good and ended up cost all the time I spent. An inspiring pioneer in the fashion industry from whom we all benefited a lot.

The Brooklyn Museum is an entire vibe. I have been visiting the museum since I was a kid—the collections and varied exhibits are fun, modern, and they host many community programs such as arts for teens, poetry slams and the infamous First Saturdays. Every first Saturday entrance is free and there is a huge party at museum. If your ever in town check it out! A few months ago I went to the Dior exhibit and it was awesome!

The Brooklyn Museum, also known as The Brooklyn Museum of Art, is an art museum located in Brooklyn, New York. With just over 1.5 million works of art and hundreds of thousands of square feet, The Brooklyn Museum is the third largest museum in all of New York City, making it a highly sought-after tourist attraction and one of the best museums in Brooklyn and best museums in NYC to visit. The art within The Brooklyn Museum exhibits embodies various world cultures and their artistic heritage. The Brooklyn Museum of Art is mainly known for its African art, Egyptian art, and paintings from the 17th to the 20th century. Famous artists on display include Norman Rockwell, Edward Hopper, Edgar Degas, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Mark Rothko to name a few. #fivestarcalifornia 🌻

Brooklyn library seems to truely work for the community. It is next to Brooklyn Botanical Garden and just few steps from Prospect Park. I attended the Children Book fair, where they had authors presenting their books. I did not by general admission to see Museum exhibit due to lack of time. Instead I spent some time walking around the Market/Pop-ups set up in the front of the building.

One of the coolest museums in NYC . Great exhibits, not too crowded, staff is very courteous. Right next to the subway. Sits next to the Botanical Gardens for anyone wanting to make a double feature. I highly recommend it to anyone for a day of culture and beauty.

Underrated museum that holds its own in a city with top tier options. My boyfriend and I were able to explore the museum and take in each floor within 2 hours. Each floor is spacious and well-curated. We truly enjoyed the mixture of avant-garde art and the more classical pieces. It made for a perfect day to spend a Saturday, coupled with a walk in Prospect Park and the Botanical Garden.

Absolutely marvelous museum and a great place to go if you're visiting NYC and want to get out of Manhattan for an afternoon! While not as large as some of the bigger museums in the city this place still can take a few hours to properly go through! The building is absolutely beautiful and the exhibits are all very well designed with detailed descriptions of each piece when possible. Highly recommend getting the combo museum & garden pass which gets you into the botanical gardens next door!

A large and beautiful museum with an incredible selection of unique works ranging from Egyptian antiquities to European, African and Asian art pieces. This museum is massive and has 5 floors of incredible art. I enjoyed exploring each floor and moving through the different demonstrations, which were beautifully laid out and maintained. 'The Dinner Party' was stunning in-person and was a highlight of my visit. I also very much recommend checking out the Visible Storage area, as there are many outstanding prices that are stored within. Another highlight was the massive KAWS 'Companion' wooden statue near the museum entrance. Overall, a wonderful and broad selection of prices within a beautifully designed museum. I cannot recommend visiting this museum enough.

I don’t usually visit museums, but the wife and I decided to give the MFA a shot on a recent trip and loved it. From the architecture of the building to the amazing sculptures and paintings from various cultures and times, we were quite entertained. It was too bad the Mummies exhibit was under renovation, but it gives us a reason to go back. The only thing that struck me was the lack of Central and South American art.

Absolutely loved it. Proper physical distancing as well as sanitizing booths. The pieces on display, the ones tucked away in the visible storage, and the overall architecture of this museum was stunning. Would definitely recommend it to locals and visitors alike. A place worth taking the time and having a visit.

It's a reality nice museum., bigger than I thought it was. They have 5 floors of art to investigate. We were there for 3 hours it wasn't busy so it was pleasant to walk around. It has suggested price of $16, but you can pay want you want they can't refuse any amount. Kids under 19 are free.

We especially loved the large collection of Ancient Egyptian art, the American paintings, and the storage room that visitors can peruse - and which is full of wonderful artworks, especially decorative pieces and furniture. Impressive museum with many changing exhibitions. partly art partly politics partly history. The entire facility is very large and the exhibits have a lot of space. I am still impressed with the work of Stephen Powers. Although I am not a David Bowie fan, this exhibition was definitely worth seeing too.

A must visit when you are in or around New York. The place is full of inspiring artifacts of history, art and culture, keeping you engaged the whole time you’re there. Often gets overshadowed by the museum’s in Manhattan but you don’t want to miss this place while you’re here. Residents and students get to pay whatever they like for the entrance. Plan to spend at least 2 -3 hours when you visit.

We went on a Thursday afternoon and it was the perfect time to go! There was barely anybody there so it felt like we had the museum to ourselves. They have a cafe and restaurant, we went to the cafe and had a wrap which was good. We wanted a sandwich but some of the lettuce looked a little sketchy. Overall the museum was very clean, well organized, and fairly easy to navigate. We should have grabbed a map, I didn’t see any anywhere.. however the staff was very helpful and answered any questions we had. They had some incredible oil paintings here, a plethora of Buddha statues and on the 5th floor they have a room where they keep past items in storage which is pretty cool. We spent about 2 1/2 hours here and saw almost all of the exhibits. (We didn’t pay for the other limited exhibits) They have a couple interactive pieces which were interesting but I kind of wish they had more! The one where we could write in the books was our favorite. I knocked a star down because with the location and the way it’s presented I wished they had a bit more exhibits and art pieces directed towards the youth or maybe more engaging information that captures our attention? The way info is presented is just very blunt.

Overall great experience with high ceilings and well thought out on the “Dior” exhibit. Stunning development of storytelling through the dresses of Dior through the different designers vision. The white room with the mirrors to showcase the design process of couture was breathtaking. I’d wear the dresses even at this point of design. Can’t wait to go back to see other fashion exhibits.

Went for the first Saturday of the month event & it was great !! There was a pop up to support a lot of small businesses which was lovely. There were all types of businesses including food, clothes, crafts, beauty products and much more. Every first Saturday of the month they have an event and I recommend going if you haven’t. They had dis in the 1st & 3rd floor. 3rd fl had salsa & Latin music, 1st fl had jazz. You can buy drinks such as wine, beer & LI ice teas. They have a cafe with food and drinks. It’s a very big museum with a lot of exhibits. Going on right now there is a spike Lee exhibition & much more! On an event day like today we did not pay entrance. If you take the train it leaves you in front of the museum.

Really sweet museum. The JR exhibit they have right now is so cool and interactive. Think it gives you a good perspective of the diversity living in New York on a personal level even. There are mummies featured here too. They ask for $16 to get in, but they will take whatever you can afford. Really cool spot definitely wish I could have spent more time here. Could have easily spent all day!

Small museum you can get through in about 1-3 hours. If you want a more manageable museum than the Museum of Natural History, you can come here and visit the Botanical Gardens afterwards. Has a very nice Egypt Hall and a new Asian wing. The Asian wing is small however. Admission is very generous and is suggested admission- you pay as much as you wish. Place is very wheelchair accessible and elevators everywhere. The subway station brings you right under the museum and is very easy to find.

The Brooklyn Museum finally reopened after almost six months and I finally got to see the "Studio 54" exhibition that was supposed to open before the COVID-19 pandemic. It was really interesting as they covered the music and clothing of the time in the late 70's and how the City and its problems brought about the Disco era. I think people just needed to escape from it all. They showed the fashions, the DJ Mixes, pictures of all the people that used to go there and all the private parties that were held there down to the invitations and videos of the events. It was a very detailed exhibition. Plan to spend about three hours at it. Only two floors are currently opened at the museum both One and Five for the private exhibitions. The rest of the museum is still shut for the time.

The Brooklyn Museum is an awesome art and historical experience. I highly recommend visiting and viewing the Obama portraits that are now on view, they are vibrant and really moving to see in person. They also have an exhibit on Dior as well as Andy Warhol. If you come be sure to really plan your visit, the museum has multiple floors- so pick up a map and figure out what installations you are most interested in and go from there. I would say that a visit can be a half day or even full day thing. They are accessible and I’ve elevators as well as audio exhibit style listening. They have a cute gift shop as well as a restaurant- however it has been closed due to COVID. **they require Photo ID and Proof of Vaccination to enter the building.

I had a great day hanging with my Sorority Sister Carmen at the Brooklyn museum. We went for the Obama's Portrait Exhibit, but got much more. We were pleasantly surprised that we were also able to see the Christian Dior Exhibit..These two exhibitions will have to be done in two post. Each fabulous in their own right and must stand alone. I encourage anyone in town to check them out before they leave. First we will start with the extraordinary designer "Christian Dior".. I was spellbound by all the magnificent fashion designs.. Second we checked out the Obamas' Portraits viewing.... What can I say, but beautiful, insightful, inspirational and moving.. Enjoy!❤❤❤❤

This whole musuem is a spectacle of light and texture. An especially gorgeous show of Christian Dior and his fashion arts. Beautifully presented. Just as much fun to watch other museum-goers who were dressed in wild designer outfits (or their own creations) as it was to see it. Note that all museum dining venues are closed for Covid, but there's a good Halal truck parked right outside for snacks.

Solid museum with a good range of stuff to see. Get tickets online to avoid the line at the front desk. Four stars because while there's something for everywhere here, the exhibits themselves felt somewhat random and not as cohesive as they perhaps could have been. Would still recommend spending an hour or two here if you're in the area

The best thing about visiting this museum is witnessing the effort the team puts into each exhibit. Information on how the museum came into possession of the art and stories on the artists are so well executed here. There’s also a large collection of African art here and also many recent works from local artist which is great to see. For those looking for classics there’s that too.

A fantastic museum. It's not as large as The Met, but it's bigger than the more specialized museums like MoMA, so you end up seeing a lot of art but it doesn't take up as much of your day. I especially like the diverse background the artists come from, such as women and people of color, that I find lacking in The Met.

This place is great. Events and the bar are the best parts to me. The regular stuff at the museum are pretty good too. Great looking building. ?

A spacious and beautiful museum that has a lot to offer. It has a mix of a modern building that houses meaningful works. There is an equal amount of new works and historical pieces. This museum also holds monthly free nights which is really cool. The museum also has a restaurant and cafe inside. There is a parking lot if you are driving here. The subway station is right outside the museum. Definitely worth the trip out this way!

The exhibits are lovely! The Dinner Party, an idea to feminism, and the new special exhibits that both opened Jan 24 were my favorites! Staff is friendly, and the only sour note was getting lost several times as multiple galleries and floors cannot be accessed by both sets of stairs or elevators but only one in specific. Pay attention to signs and enjoy the visit! I certainly did!

The Brooklyn Museum is the third-largest in the NYC area. That means inside you’ll discover a rotating collection of over 1.5 million pieces of art. The works range the extent from ancient masks and sculptures to modern paintings and ceramics. Make sure you plan a day to see the great art and while you are here, remember to look at the innovative local artists’ exhibits as well!

It is a great place to come for First Saturdays. It gives a lot of folks from all over New York the opportunity to come see all of the exhibits for free. But remember ya'll, it only happens once a month on the First Saturday, that is your only opportunity to get in free. Make it count.

A visit to the Brooklyn Museum is always a pleasure because I feel as though I am taking a peek into different times and places throughout history. The Museum is always clean, welcoming, quiet and well organized. I am a member and live in the neighborhood of Prospect Heights. Which in andnof itself is a gem, in and of itself! The Brooklyn Museum is great for New York City.

This museum is a hike if you're outside of Brooklyn, but it's worth the fellowship of the ring journey. It's all gorgeous Corinthian columns on the outside echoed visually inside with exposed brick and hallway after hallway of beautifully quiet exhibition rooms. Unlike the lovely but sterile Met or the lovely but soulless MoMa, the Brooklyn Museum maintains a sense of neighborhood, of community, from the moment you set foot inside.

  • 4/5 Erik J. 3 years ago on Google
Founded in 1895, it was intended to be the world’s largest museum when Brooklyn was still an independent city. In physical size, it is now the third largest museum in NYC and contains something like 1.5 million works. The layout can feel choppy due to late 20th century renovations to revitalize the McKim, Mead and White original Beaux-Arts design. There is world class art inside - from antiquity to the currant day. The Egyptian collections are particularly impressive. Judy Chicago’s 1979 epic feminist sculpture, “The Dinner Party” acquired in 2002, is not to be missed. Also on display is the famous Gilbert Stuart, “Portrait of George Washington” from 1796. The Brooklyn Museum’s curators make a notable, praiseworthy effort - both in their permanent collections and special exhibitions - to make the museum relevant to all Brooklynites and Americans alike. Yet, a lot of energy goes into populist, special exhibitions drawing from contemporary film, fashion and popular music versus more high-brow art topics that draw and maintain international reputation and tourists. Sadly, there is a sense of the lack of vibrant funding throughout.

The Virtual Exhibition ( "The Crown" and the "Queen's gambit" )was super cool. It had all the aspects I wanted to look at and was super easy to navigate. From all the details to the movie clips, this was really well designed and had a lot of work put into it. If I were to change anything I would recommend having more navigation options. When I first tried to navigate the costumes it was confusing which costumes were for which movie, and how to get to the next costume. I expected an arrow or symbol to switch costumes, but I was wrong. Adding a couple of words showing how to navigate it will be a lot better. Especially for elderly people.

The Egyptian collection is amazing - much better than the Met's. The modern art section is badly curated. Pieces with nothing in common are just jammed together. There is also an attempt to devote space to indigenous and Native American Art. It is badly done. The indigenous art is crowded out by other random pieces. In the end, the indigenous art got short shrift. The Kehinde Wiley on the first floor is very good. I hope I can get back for the Kaws exhibit. Rodin's Burghers are also worth the trip, as is the Alavoine Room, the Hicks, the Stuart and the Picasso.

The Brooklyn Museum is well laid out. The exhibits are culturally respectful, and well documented. The special exhibit spaces are designed so that everyone can experience the art without feeling rushed, cramped or pressured to rush. There is space for visitors to write, sketch or in other ways document artwork they're studying, or focused upon. The guards are respectful and unobtrusive; their presence is not disruptive while at the same time they are aware and observant.

The museum layout is spacious and well lit. I figured a museum like this would be busy on a Saturday morning/ midday - especially on a beautiful NY day despite COVID. This was far from the truth (it was busy) but the thoughtful design of the museum works so well. You can enjoy artifacts and art pieces without feeling like 20 other people are waiting to get closer behind you. Maybe it was COVID or just mutual respect, nobody packed around any piece. At times, I forgot I was in a museum with people around. The security is not obtrusive, but deff a known presence too. The vibe was so relaxed and respectful - I never felt rushed either. The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago (table pictured below) and Luce Center for American Art (5,000-square-foot visible storage - it's the pictures of items behind glass below) were my favorite parts of the museum. But I shared some pictures of artifacts and art below.

Went Sunday for the Christian Dior exhibition. I had purchased my tickets in the internet. It was very easy to find. We were ask for proof of vaccine and id cards . We were told to go to the third floor where the exhibition was. When we entered the first room with Dior's name a biography and a big screen showing runways of Dior's fashion shows we couldn't be more overwhelmed and excited to be there with all the fashion biography of Dior. The museum did such an splendid job combining fashion and the architecture design of each space were Dior's haute couture was displayed. The garden of dreams was spectacular the section were they showed all white pieces with the glass ceiling was amazing. I couldn't say anything else but what a wonderful experience thanks to the Brooklyn museum.

Solely based on special exhibits. Like most museums that host special events, they follow the same policy no re-entry policy. It was a smooth flow, but still felt unorganized. Only real complaint was the lack of the souvenirs, but that is expected when dealing with Kaws or any other sought after Artist. If this exhibit comes back they should come up with a wider array of things for purchase. Rest of the museum was ok, but it definitely isn’t the style of art I’m used to.

Great! Museum a lot of options to view. There are three active floors. It will take about an hour or two to get through the exhibits. The exhibits are diverse: sculptures, paintings, videos, sounds, abstract arts etc. There seem to be exciting things coming for summer 2022 such Virgil Abloh exhibit! Payment is a donation but they have different suggestions such as $10 for students. Currently there is an Andy Warhol exhibit for $25 per person. The gift shop is really cool and they have discounts.

Overall, it was an amazing experience, especially since admission was "pay as you wish" (except for special exhibitions). The museum's extensive collection spans many different eras and cultures, from ancient Egypt to contemporary art. The building itself is beautiful and spacious, with plenty of room to explore and take in the exhibits. The exhibits feature current events, artifacts, and incredible works of art from all over the world. Visitors can expect a lot of walking, but it's worth it to see the art everywhere, from the entrance to even in the parking lot. It was an absolutely fantastic and informative experience. I highly recommend visiting the Brooklyn Museum. It's a true gem in the heart of Brooklyn and a wonderful way to spend a day exploring art and culture.

Always has thought provoking, beautiful, and memorable exhibitions. And seeing the dinner party in real life was incomparable. Don’t miss the Africa Fashion show. Beautiful!

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Brooklyn Museum. There are many wonderful pieces of art and artifacts of various cultures that help weave a story of various cultures and peoples. Out of all the many exhibits I found two that touched my soul, posted with this review.

This museum should stand in line with Metropolitan or Natural History Museum, but it doesn’t stay even near. Very small selection of art, half exhibits closed. It’s 16$ and no discounts for NY residents (Met and Natural History is pay as you wish). I didn’t see anything interesting to be honest, the only thing is they have sarcophagus with actual corps in it. That’s it, in my opinion not worth at all, unless there is some interesting exhibition (my friend visited the museum when there was Dior expansion and she loved it).

I attended this museum firm to endorse time to see the Spike Lee Exhibit. I arrived around 1:30 and the line only had 10 people. The adult cost is $25. They have a restaurant on the ground floor after you enter that seems really nice and a had a menu on display outside of the entrance. The museum is airy and bright with a lot of windows and light as you navigate the ground floor. The Spike Lee exhibit was on the 8th floor I think. It was amazing! Spike Lee was THE major contributor to black creative arts in his time and the exhibit showcases a lot of his work and personal loves, like basketball and his family. There are rooms that show snippets from some of his movies like Malcolm X, School Daze, and Do The Right Thing. By the time I left around 3PM the ticket line was outside! Glad we got there early!
