The Kakum national park is a heightened adventurous place. It is an all fun canopy walkway. Aside being a fun filled adventure, I did not see any renovations or changes since my first visit in 2014 though there may be. I would not advise visiting on a holiday as schools take advantage to visit which makes the place crowded.

Wow! What an awesome place! We did the Canopy walk which was pretty high but we felt safe the whole way round! Our guide Diane was FANTASTIC!!! We continued after the canopy walk with the 1hr long forest walk and it too was AWESOME!! We learnt so much about the traditional medicines and trees! We tried Coco on the up to the canopy walk and then had a refreshing Coconut on the way down.. we did get pretty sweaty so recommend wearing loose fitting clothes and not sandals if going on the forest walk. 100% will go again!!

The Kakum National Park is the largest natural reserve in Ghana occupying an area of 375sq km. It has a wide variety of fauna and flora including some endangered species like the Diana monkey, giant bongo antelope and the African elephant. It has one of the largest bird population with about 266 different bird species. The park is very popular for its famed canopy walkway which hits heights of 40m. You can get spectacular views of the forest floor and some of the tall trees in the forest. Other interesting activities available at the reservation are birdwatching, hiking and camping.

Kakum is a very beautiful place to visit but I mean there should be more to it than just walking on suspended bridges. There could be more interactive activities that could be added to the national park; maybe even add more wildlife, such as zebra, turtles, Giraffes, etc but that's not happening. I wouldn't travel hours just to go walk on the canopy walk and back. I mean it's a beautiful place with a lot of natural greens but It could be way better, the staff is not engaging enough with guests, however, the canopy walk was great and safe. Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽ‰

Walking on the Kakum National Park Canopy Walkway is a must do activity on your visit to Cape Coast. The hike up to the Canopy walk requires you climbing a hill about 250m above sea level and itโ€™s a nice workout opportunity. Itโ€™s not ideal for physically challenged and people with back pains. The canopy has a height from 11m to 40m above the forest floor. Go and conquer your fears and enjoy a bird eye view of the park.

The experience at Kakum National Park is special and unique and incredible and exciting and definitely lingers on in yo memory long after you've visited the place.. Being able to be so close to nature and experience each element in their natural habitat is truly fascinating. The canopy walk is both beautiful and scary first time but you can definitely get used to it. One of the most visited tourist destinations in Ghana and the continent as a whole. Do visit whenever you can ๐ŸŒš

There are many things to do at this park. We went bird watching, hiking to the canopy walkway and visited the museum. Please bring hiking shoes if you want to go on the canopy walk. It's almost a 20 to 30 minutes hike up a mountain to get to the entrance. The canopy is very safe, there are 2 paths, one is a longer route than the other! The museum sells t-shirts and other souvenirs!

This trip i will never forget ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ. The good thing is they've made an exit so if you can't walk on all the 7 canopy walk, after the first canopy walk you make a exit turn and use two canopy walk. Its an experience, my legs kept shaking cos i was scared but fun though especially if you go as a group. The teasing, memories etc.. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Amazing place to enjoy a day with a mild hike, followed by over watching the forest's flora and fauna from the canopy on the rope bridges. You can opt for different trail options if you'd like. Not forgetting that after the field trip you can enjoy some good refreshment at the restaurant with a lovley ambiance.

Kakum National Park, located in the Central Region of Ghana, is an ecological marvel and a must-visit for both nature enthusiasts and curious travelers. With lush rainforests and an abundance of wildlife, the park offers an authentic experience of Ghana's natural beauty. The crown jewel of Kakum National Park is undoubtedly the Akwaaba Canopy Walkway. Suspended high above the forest floor, this walkway provides an unparalleled view of the rich biodiversity that the park is home to. Walking on the canopy feels like floating above a sea of green, offering an exhilarating and unique perspective. Complementing the natural attractions, the park also offers small culture stores. These shops provide visitors with an opportunity to purchase local crafts, souvenirs, and traditional products, further enriching the cultural experience. The tour guides at Kakum are particularly commendable, with their vast knowledge and engaging explanations. They not only guide visitors through the physical terrain but also through the historical context and significance of the location. The insights provided into the plant life and the ecosystem as a whole add depth to the visit, transforming it from a mere sightseeing experience to an educational journey. Amenities at the park are thoughtfully provided, considering the comfort and convenience of visitors. From rest areas to refreshment options, Kakum ensures that guests can fully enjoy their time without worrying about basic needs. In conclusion, Kakum National Park offers an unforgettable experience that combines natural beauty, cultural richness, and educational value. The Akwaaba Canopy Walkway stands as a testament to the wonder of nature, while the tour guides breathe life into the park's history and ecology. Whether you're an adventurer, a nature lover, or someone looking to understand Ghana's natural heritage, Kakum National Park is a destination that will enrich, inspire, and entertain. It's a great testament to the diversity and beauty that Ghana has to offer.

Exceptional place if you are interested in birds. Go early (6am but anytime before 10am should be ok) and you'll have the canopy walk to yourself -- it will be teeming with birds (you can easily see 40+ species in a couple of hours).

The nature and landscape itself is wonderful, beautiful jungle with loads of plants and trees of all sorts. I did the canopy walk, which took all in all 30 minutes: you hike a little bit up (a very easy set of steps.. although the guide was like โ€œcongrats on making it here, itโ€™s really difficult!โ€ Dudeโ€ฆ), then you start the little walk on the canopy and observe the jungle from above. Again all very easy and doable on your own but they donโ€™t let you, which is a shame. Also because you end up walking around with very big groups, not very nice since you are crammed on the same canopy all together and you canโ€™t stop and observe around cause you have to keep on walking to let people go. The guide was friendly but tbh he didnโ€™t give a lot of interesting informations. Plus we didnโ€™t see any animals, not even a bird. All in all itโ€™s a nice experience, but not worth the crazy price they ask foreigners which is 100 cedis + 5 cedis entrance fee. I wouldnโ€™t go again.

The canopy walkway is fantastic, unique in this part of the world. Great opportunities to study canopy-species. The museum at the entrance is nice, though a bit old-fashioned. A few more trails could be a good idea.

Iโ€™ve been there both dry and raining season and I enjoyed it. The museum that was added recently has made it even more informative as you get to learn more about the national park. If you love adventure this is the destination for you when you are in the central region.

Loved the canopy walkway! It's a 20-30 min walk through the forest from the car park and visitors centre. The views of the forest are really nice and I would recommend visiting on a week day so it's not so busy and you can take your time and listen to the sounds of the forest without too much man-made noise. Also did the 1 hour nature walk which was supposed to give loads of information about the forest, trees, plants etc but was actually only 20 minutes walk along a smaller path from the end of the canopy walkway back to the car park. Wouldn't recommend this! It's a nice easy drive up from Cape Coast, good road, takes about 45 minutes one way.

Most definitely one of the must visit places in Ghana as a tourist. Being surrounded by majestic trees and soothing sounds of nature is an experience that lives on for a while. The small museum was most definitely a pleasant surprise. The restaurant also serves really good food; both locak and continental dishes. You could also get some cocoa fruits and organic honey to buy. It also has a few African gift shops. It's a family friendly place.

One of the popular natural reserves in Ghana. An amazing place to be. Clean and very serene environment. It was raining when we got there and the feeling was so good. We went in a larger group for the Canada day here and it was a huge task convincing them to let us in. They finally did and instead of them giving some sort of discount for the activities, they were rather increasing the fees just because they thought we were from the Canadian embassy ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. They were a lit bit unprofessional honestly. It was still a great experience after all.

Want to experience nature? Then head to the Kakum National Park - walk on the canopies, drink freshly plucked coconut, and if you havenโ€™t seen raw cocoa before, they have it too. You can buy it and even eat it. Empire versus the rich raw Ghanaian cocoa.

You know the places you constantly hear about tend to be overhyped? Well thatโ€™s not Kakum, regardless of the number of times I have been there and who I have taken there, itโ€™s always fun. The canopy walk is the highlight but the less popular treasure over there is the TREE HOUSE! If you can spend a night in the forest and go for the early morning hikeโ€ฆ itโ€™s awesome Last I went I think it was 120ghc Thereโ€™s a guide with you the whole night You canโ€™t go alone or in a group Please donโ€™t let the sounds of the monkeys (I think๐Ÿค”) that sounds like screams of agony (I kid you not) scare you off Itโ€™s a great adventure. Get all the tools you need from @bucketlistghana If you want to dig into the tree house more watch my YouTube video or check my Instagram @akosuashirley

Please be aware that it's seven canopy walk. You can only bail out on the second one. No turning back once you cross into the third. You have a little hike to get to the 1st canopy. I am afraid of heights, but I accomplished all seven.

We didnโ€™t have a good experience at the park. We arrived and said we want to do the canopy walk and a one-hour hike. The reception rangers said we can go to the canopy walk with a guide and then if we want to do a hike, just tell him and pay when we leave the park. There are separate prices for the different activities. After we finished the canopy walk (which was quite nice) we told the guide we want to go for a hike. He said no one had told him and at that point we could only do a short hike. We did 20 mins of walking and returned to the reception. We asked if we can go on another, bigger hike, like we had originally requested. After much discussion, they said OK but tried to charge us the price of two 1-hour hikes. We thought this was unacceptable as it was their mistake in the first place why we didnโ€™t go on the 1-hour hike. They didnโ€™t budge. This definitely left a bitter taste in our mouths. The park was pretty nice, but you definitely donโ€™t need a guide and you need to hike a fair bit to get out of the touristy part.

A great experience. Walking over the canopy which is about 800m above, whilst it sways left and right, with birds chirping in the trees and the cool breeze over your face. Don't try it tho if you're scared of heights. You'll be screaming your lungs out

Break that fear and walk on that canopy almost 10 storey building height See the beauty of a virgin forest for the first time in your life, yes itโ€™s good for you health to do a mini hiking and feel refreshed for this new decade You will also get the chance to see the oldest tree in the whole of the western region. Yea, over 500 years old tree, very interesting Yes lest I forget... the road is so perfect now all the way to the forest so no more excuse. Bird watches also have a boast since you can now book your tree house apartment to stay in over nite to watch all the wild birds at late evening and 4am early morning.

Kakum National Park, located in the coastal environs of the Central Region[1][2] of Ghana,[3] covers an area of 375 square kilometres (145 sq mi). Established in 1931 as a reserve, it was gazetted as a national park only in 1992 after an initial survey of avifauna was conducted. The area is covered with tropical forest.[4][5][6] The uniqueness of this park lies in the fact that it was established at the initiative of the local people and not by the State Department of wildlife who are responsible for wildlife preservation in Ghana. It is one of only 3 locations in Africa with a canopy walkway,[7] which is 350 metres (1,150 ft) long and connects seven tree tops which provides access to the forest.[5][8] Itโ€™s one the best tourist place in Ghana.

A tourist attraction managed by the Ghana tourism authority. Is a real deal of a fun pack. All activities here including moving about is monitored and directed by professional tour guides. Security here is quit questionable since there is no security check point before entering or inside the park. But on a general rating itโ€™s safe since we donโ€™t have any major crime report from the park. You have a little hiking before you get to take the Ultimate which is a walk through the canopy walkway. Its a little scary the experience is worth the sacrifice.

I had immense fun here. Far more than I expected. The canopy crossing was the highlight for me, just ensure you take a bottle of water at the beginning of the journey but finish it up before you get to the canopy crossing ๐Ÿคญitโ€™s really high and you wouldnโ€™t want to hold anything you donโ€™t want to lose especially your phone. Second advice is dress properly, put on exercise shoes, because youโ€™re in for a long trek

It's such a lovely place. I entreat you go there and walk on all the 7. It's scary but be brave. The trill is soo sureal. And due to covid it's not packed on the canopy walk. A truly breathtaking adventure through the forest and up to the canopy walkway. Didnโ€™t get to enjoy the canopy walk adventure because of my little boy being so afraid but still loved it. Road from cape coast was in good state too. A little observation though- at the ticketing place, told only canopy walk available so we pay for that and get a receipt; then we start the tour then the guide says we can also do the hike or visit the treehouse but have to pay for them. Hope itโ€™s not a means to get the monies paid into pockets outside the ticketing systemโ€ฆ we were way inside the forest & doubt weโ€™d have come back out to pay & re-enterโ€ฆ didnโ€™t opt for the additional tour though to find out.

Our guide was great too and he tried his best to make this experience even better. It is a great way to stay active although I admit it is an unusual way to exercise. Loved every minute of it. The canopy walkway was scary but we still took the longer route. It gets better as you go on. It is safe but a few screws will have to be tightened and some wood changed. The experience is unbeatable. Take the longer route! The world is your oyster ?

Good access road from Cape Coast, patient and helpful front office staff, and great guides. The hike through the forest, when you're introduced to plants and their medicinal, economic, and cultural values, is amazing. The view from the canopy walkways is spectacular. I'll always recommend Kakum to everyone. Next time, I'll spend a couple of nights on the tree platform.

Very detailed walking tour for an hour with knowledgeable guides. There is the added bonus of the canopy walk at the end which is both frightening and exhilarating. We'll worth the 25GHc. More sights of the animals that live there and a more extensive food menu at the end of the walk to make it a 5.

Kakum National Park is in the south of Ghana. There are endangered mammals, but rich in butterflies and birds. The suspended rope bridge (canopy walkway) is quite adventurous and the waterfalls is a lovely scene to experience the natural beauty. Itโ€™s a wonderful tourist spot and experience the cross-country rock climbing, and a great place for expedition.

Kakum National Park, one of Ghana's major natural conservatories located in the Central Region of Ghana, about 29.5 km away from Cape Coast (40 mins drive) and 176 km away from the national capital, Accra. It is well known for it's Canopy Walk and tree houses for lovers of bird watching. It also has a little stream. The interesting fact about the Kakum is it has two segments - the virgin forest which is home to most of the forest animals and the 'devirginised' forest. Well you are not likely (99.5%) to encounter any of these forest animals. So keep your calm. And lest I forget, their tour guides are top-notch knowledgeable professionals. It is a must-go-to site if you are in Ghana.

The Kakum National Park is a tropical rainforest reserve located in Kakum, Central Region in Ghana. It serves as a home to several species of wildlife including endangered species. Itโ€™s a fun place to be. I totally recommend the exhilarating canopy walk for potential tourists. A new childrenโ€™s section has also been opened in the park. Tour guides are available all day to guide you through the breathtaking park. Visit the park anytime youโ€™re in Ghana and thank me later.

Kakum National Park National park in Ghana Kakum National Park, located in the coastal environs of the Central Region of Ghana, covers an area of 375 square kilometres (145 sq mi). Established in 1931 as a reserve, it was gazetted as a national park only in 1992 after an initial survey of avifauna was conducted. The area is covered with tropical forest. The uniqueness of this park lies in the fact that it was established at the initiative of the local people and not by the State Department of wildlife who are responsible for wildlife preservation in Ghana. It is one of only 3 locations in Africa with a canopy walkway, which is 350 metres (1,150 ft) long and connects seven tree tops which provides access to the forest. Quick Facts: Location, Coordinates ... The most notable endangered species of fauna in the park are Diana monkey, giant bongo antelope, yellow-backed duiker and African elephant. It is also an Important Bird Area recognized by the Bird Life International with the bird area fully overlapping the park area. The bird inventory confirmed 266 species in the park, including eight species of global conservation concern. One of these species of concern is the white-breasted guineafowl. Nine species of hornbill and the grey parrot have been recorded. It is very rich in butterflies as well, and a new species was discovered in 1993. As of 2012, the densest population of forest elephants in Ghana is located in Kakum. The Museums and Monuments Board of the Republic of Ghana has proposed that UNESCO declare the park a natural World Heritage Site under criteria vii and x. The submission made in 2000 is listed under the tentative List of World Heritage Sites. History In 1931, the area drained by the headwater catchment of the Kakum River was declared a forest reserve and managed by the Forestry Division. During this period, logging operations were prevalent, particularly of the mahogany (Khaya ivorensis) tree species. The logging operations continued till 1989 when the management of the reserve was transferred to the Wildlife Department. A Feasibility Study and Preliminary 5-year Management Plan for the development of Kakum National Park as an ecotourism destination were developed in 1990 under a project conducted for the United Nations Development Program (Dudley 1990). The Feasibility Study included preliminary biodiversity assessments of the flora and fauna of Kakum Forest Reserve and adjoining Assin-Attandanso Forest Reserve, and an elephant population survey (Dudley 1990; Dudley, Mensah-Ntiamoah,& Kpelle 1992; Dudley 1995). The Feasibility Study and Preliminary 5-year Management Plan were developed in a collaborative and consultative process involving a consulting biologist, forestry officials, wildlife officials, local communities, Ghanaian universities, regional government officials, and other key stakeholders (Dudley 1992). It must be recognized that one, Mr. Ebenezer Kwasi Agbley, the then Central Regional Manager for Ghana Tourist Board gave birth to this dream under a program he initiated and implemented - Tourism Development Scheme for Central Region (TODSCER)which was expanded and became CENTRAL REGION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM under a later created Commission - Central Region Development Commission(CECECOM). He showcased the TODSCER program in America and drew a number of sponsoring institutions both bilateral and multi-lateral from the donor community for the project to its maturity. The project later brought on board Game & Wildlife to manage and maintain the Park. In 1992, the Wildlife Department gazetted Kakum to be a park under the Wildlife Reserves Regulations (Ll 1525) as the Kakum Conservation Area including the Assin Attandanso Forest Reserve. After a survey of the faunal richness of the conservation area, it was split into the Kakum National Park and the Assin Attandanso Forest Reserve during the same year. The split was justified with the argument that Cape Coast and 33 other towns and villages continue to need timber from the forest and potable water provided by the Kakum River. Geography Kakum

I really enjoyed it both forest and treetop walk (thanks to our guide called Joseph). Though you cannot spend a huge amount of time there. Unfortunately only during our visit we found out that there is another tour (physically demanding and more costly) to search for forest elephants. You have to call in advance to check if itโ€™s possible. Next time I would also consider staying at the treehouse inside the NP. It seems like quite the place to spend a night.

The perfect hideous rainforest harbouring the longest Canopy walk in Ghana... Right in the Central region ...with good tour guide, an African art market, well kept washrooms and a kids playground. The scenery from up the canopy is a sight to behold. Prepare to pay 2ghc per head at the entrance before the payment for the hike and canopy walk... Oh P.S: they have a Tree house in the forest for people who want to stay over night and watch some nocturnal animals...

  • 4/5 D B. 3 years ago on Google
Although park opens at 7am, required guided tours do not begin until 9am unless you can make prior arrangements for an earlier start. 2GHS entry fee, 50GHS for 1 hour Hiking Tour and 60GHS for Canopy Tour. There are several trails in the park but I believe all hiking has to be done with a guide and for good reason, the trails are not particularly well marked. For Hiking Tour be prepared for an uphill start that can be a healthy workout although your guide no doubt will move at your pace. Don't expect to see "Wild Animals" during a day hike. They're in their natural environment and will disappear as soon as they sense you coming. Here most of them are nocturnal and the park does offer night hikes if you want to increase your chances of seeing them. All I saw were bugs, butterflies and.. The Beatles.

Nice Tour, spectacular views and a very cool Guide. But the rest was a catastrophe. Even though I booked four weeks in advance my Guide wasn't informed that I'll come after working hours. Had to wait until it's gotten dark. Then they informed me, a foreigner in the middle of nowhere, that there is no food nor water in the park whatsoever. Went to the next village, the food there made me sick, stomachache, fever for two days, cold sweat. This made enjoying the tour quite impossible. Then they brought me to the way more expensive tree house even though I asked for a single lodge... which also was under maintenance, nobody informed about that. Still they charged me the complete price. No apology by the management or anything. Never ever again.

The forest is dense which intensifies the sense of wilderness you feel as you trek through it. The path leading to either the canopy walk or tree house is well worn however, the difficulty is still probably a medium rating. I was fortunate to see a colony of driver ants in the move.

The hike to the beginning of the walk way is steep and some people felt it was challenging but if youโ€™re in decent shape itโ€™s not hard. It is hot though so definitely bring (or buy) water. I highly recommend a bag or backpack so you have your hands free while on the walk way. My bag was too small for my water bottle and I wished I didnโ€™t have to have it in my hands. If you have a fear of heights, this is probably not the activity for you. We also did a hike in the forest floor which I quite enjoyed in comparison to being in the canopy. Our guide was great, a local guy whoโ€™s been doing tours for 7 years. We read terrible review for the restaurant so we didnโ€™t plan on eating there but we watched people get their food in a decent amount of time. We had ice cream and beers and that was a nice treat. Parking is 5 cedis and then the canopy and hike had a fee, non Ghanians are quite a bit more. We were staying in Elmina and the drive was pretty easy, road is in decent condition and there were no police checkpoints. We made it in less than an hour. I know people do it but coming from Accra would take so long. Itโ€™s not far in distance but travel time is very slow in Ghana. I highly recommend traveling to cape coast or Elmina and then going to Kakum.

I did enjoy Kakum National Park Canopy Walk. The view is beautiful and there was a little museum at the beginning. It is however quite a hike It took 30 minutes to get to the actual canopy walk and that's only if you're in really good shape. There are rest places on your way up so you can sometimes buy something to drink and also sit down and rest for a bit if you are tired. However on the way down is a little treacherous if it has rained recently but it is quite the experience and I would do it again. I did not take as many pictures on this trip once we got actually outside to do the hike because I was focused on trying to make it to the top and across the canopies

Awesome experience. Hiking guide was patient, knowledgeable and friendly but then again most Ghanaians are ๐Ÿ’œ. The canopy walk is an awesome way to face your fear of heights ๐Ÿ˜† and hiking through the rainforest is an amazing way to connect with Mother Nature.

If you are into hiking, taking risks with gravity parachuting, this will be a good place for you. I was scared when I got on the canopy. The park is beautiful, very large and the people were extremely nice. But for me, I would not attempt this again because I was scared ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€.

I enjoyed myself so much so I didn't want to leave, it was really fun being in an environment. I am a big lover of nature so I felt so at home. Walking all the seven canopy was a different feeling each time. I would definitely go back again ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

The climb up and down kicks my butt because I'm out of shape, but walking on the Canopy Walkway is absolutely worth it! The guides are great and look after slowpokes like me, while still taking care of the main group. If you come to Ghana, make time to come to Kakum. It's awesome.

The forest and park were really beautiful and easy to get to from Cape Coast (via taxi or to tro if youโ€™re keen to cheap it). The canopy walk was both an exhilarating and stunningly unique experience. The bridges are VERY rickety and high up though so expect adrenaline. The logistics of the place wasnโ€™t great. Had to queue for ages to get a ticket with my name on it and then go to another area to pay which confused a lot of people and took a long time. I was also told to wait for a required guide so I went to the designated waiting area. After waiting for about 45 mins I went back to the ticket desk and they said that the guide for my ticket had already left and I had to wait in the office for another 20 mins for a different guide. I usually enjoy the laid back Ghanaian energy, but this just felt unnecessarily inefficient and like it was making life hard for the staff working there too. Another element worth noting is that Kakum (particularly the canopy walkway) is super popular for school tours so the place was chaotically heaving with groups of kids. I really liked that side and seeing the kids getting hyped on nature. But some other people in my guide group wished they had come at a time when they could appreciate the peace and silence of the forest. It also meant the chance of seeing any animals was minimal. If this might be a factor for you, apparently getting there early helps miss the crowds.
