Pretty beach! Gorgeous water! Sandy shores! But unless you’re staying nearby there are not a lot of local shops or much nearby. Often you’ll run into some local dogs trying to make friends. Several places with pull out spots for benches and picnic tables. Plenty of parking available. Great spot, but more so for locals. If you’re a tourist trying to see the best places on a deadline, this beach is very pretty, but pales in comparison to some of the island’s other world renown beaches.

Hard to get to, read your insurance thoroughly. Yes, we saw many small cars going slow and actually making it all the way. But, if you’re not sure, don’t go. Yesterday I saw sharks and turtles and every fish imaginable, and the riptide was fairly intense so be aware that you need to be a strong swimmer to go out past the first break.

A nice beach for snorkeling or just hanging out. A bit secluded and the road to get there is bumpy. Make sure you bring an SUV or be prepared to walk through the lava field in the scorching sun to get there.

Getting here's a bit of an adventure but pretty accessible with an SUV. Felt like we hasld the whole place to ourselves most days even though the parking lot was full. Some of the best snorkeling and super calm for young kids. A few trees provide some shade but recommend bringing umbrellas.

A hidden gem! As you're driving by, all you can see is black lava rock. Driving along the very bumpy road, more rock. We made it in a Malibu rental, but be very careful driving, it's a pretty bad road, but totally worth it! Lots of picnic tables and BBQ grills as well. Many trees for great shade. Definitely recommend stopping by this quiet and beautiful beach park!

This Kekaha kai beach is one of my favorite beaches on the west side of the big island. It only takes around 30-35 minutes from the Kona downtown, and it has convenient facilities for the beach goers such as shower and restrooms. The ocean color is so beautiful and it literally makes you feel that you are in the Hawaii. However you need to be aware of that the ocean wave could be too powerful and could harm you. Please be mindful to check the ocean status and ask the beach guard for the status. Also the parking space is usually full and could be challenging to find the space. If you don't want to park far away from the beach, you may need to visit the beach earlier. Don't forget that this beach also is the good one to view the sun set.

This beach is close to the airport and it’s our first time going. The road to the beach is run down, and it has lots of speed bumps. The beach is beautiful and it wasn’t crowded when we went. It has restrooms and picnic tables. We hang out and relaxed. It’s interesting seeing the airplanes fly overhead.

The road down to this place is an adventure - take a vehicle with somewhat high clearance. We saw some sedans that were able to make it halfway down the road. There is a parking lot near 11, and you can park there and walk all the way down (probably at least a mile walk though). This beach park has picnic and BBQ spaces, but there weren't really many people on the beach. There were really rough waves and a strong current, so no snorkeling or casual swimming. The lava around the road is really pretty. Gates close promptly at 6:30pm.

Beautiful beach with a quite treacherous road. We almost turned around because we didn't wanna damage the vehicle. We saw smaller cars make it so we pressed on. I reckon the beach would have been packed if the road was better. Glad we went but I wouldn't go again unless we had a jeep or something with off road capability. Take er very slow & easy. 🤙 We did get to witness a stealth fighter plane overhead.

Beautiful scenery. Majestic sunset. The mixture of fire, water, earth, and air that have created this place are evident when you bask in the environment that you become one with at this location.

Nice little beach. The waves are pretty cool, so bring a boogie board. Saw a swimming turtle. Restrooms and decent parking available

One of my favorite beaches. There are stairs to get down to the beach area. Bathrooms and outdoor shower. If you are lucky you may see Honu just make sure you keep your distance. Depending on the time of year I have seen Monk seals. Beautiful beach overall with beautiful sunsets.

The road leading down to the beach didn't cause us any concern or trouble in a Nissan rouge. There was a kia soul made it down fine that we followed, so really so long as you have ground clearance youll be fine - something like a c class merc wouldn't make it without scraping the life out the car. There were lots of large speed control humps on the track down, which considering the state of it was almost comical as you really did have to go super slow anyway. The track itself was probably nearly 2 miles from the highway winding through lava fields, the track to subsequent beaches did have a barrier across to stop vehicles driving down. There was a large roped off area on the beach as there was a newborn seal, quite a few other seals could be spotted in the ocean. We didn't see any turtles. We did some snorkling. It wouldn't be suitable for a child, nervous or new swimmer as there is a current, but for anyone that is an adequate swimmer it was fine - or at least it was today, that's not to say it isn't rougher on other days! It did get deep between the reef areas and very soon off the coast so there are few places you would be able to stand once in, and few places you could walk in although where you could you did not need sea shoes as it was sand and smooth rock. The sea life was mature although not abundant compared to other places we have been along the cost. There was definitely larger fish than others we have seen, but there was a less condensed and I'd also say less varied population to other spots we have visited. There were very few people on the beach, however it was a Monday morning we visited. Ample free parking, picnic benches, toilet facilities (no hand wash facilities) and even trash cans on the beach.

Enough room for rolling with the waves on a 1/4 mile of sand while having easy access to reefs around ancient lava flows. Snorkeling provided abundant sea life to observe. Plenty of places to set up your chair and umbrella 🏖️ with nearby adundant shade from trees. Hiking trails lead to more beautiful swimming locations. Great restroom facilities and adequate free parking. There is a southern approach that should only be driven to by SUV or 4-wheel drive that also has nice public restrooms and plenty of turtles and mongooses to entertain visitors.

Warning! Bumpy road ahead of your beautiful Kekaha Kai State Beach. The condition of the road to the beach is so bad. 4Wheels drive is not necessary but recommended. Front wheel forward passenger car is ok, but drive with extra careful. Not very recommended by walking. It is a long axx road. Once you drive pass the bumpy road, you can see one of the heaven in Kona. But the parking space is very limited at the end.

BEWARE: EXTREMELY ROUGH ACCESS ROAD. DO NOT BREAK YOUR RENTAL CAR. Just park and walk 1mile. The beach itself is very nice and surrounded by lava rocks that you can also check out. Guests should promptly leave at 7PM as the gates will close at that time.

Getting to this beach is an adventure. Experience a bumpy ride or hike, either way, you will be walking. Closest parking lot is half mile away. Take in an awesome view with the big planes flying overhead (estimate ~1,000 feet) heading to the nearby airport. Soak in the calm water on this secluded beach. Recommend taking jeep since the road getting there is rough. One of my favorite highlights is being with my family on this beautiful beach.

Very nice beach, takes a little time getting in here cause the road is very broken up. But worth the time here. Beautiful water.

This place might just have the best sunset on island with great picnic and grilling spots equipped with tables and concrete pads. There are restrooms near the beach and plenty of trash bins to keep the area clean. The drive down can be accomplished with almost any car as long as the driver is competent at off-roading - but I do recommend something with clearance for piece of mind. Leave no trace and keep it clean. Be cautious of the currents and if you're unsure ask a local before getting in the water.

Great day for hanging at the beach! Long and bumpy drive into the beach but well worth it! Tide pools and beach area but no waves! There was a group of guys who were loaded with fishing gear, set for the day!

Beautiful relatively secluded beach for a Saturday visit. Some areas are very choppy depending on the tide. Those areas are not appropriate for children. With other areas relatively calm. The beach is on the flight path of the nearby airport, but there are not a ridiculous amount of flights coming in throughout the day.

I would go here any day. The sand is amazing, water is clear. The water was crazy when went but it was lot of fun. Life guards are on top of their game. There is a lot of rocks so be careful! Swim on the bay:)

Great beach and water. Plenty of shade available midday if you want it. But getting here in a car is nearly impossible. The road was a challenge even for the Nissan Titan we were in.

The beach is very near to the airport and it was our quick gateway before boarding our return flight. The drive to the end point is quite something. The sign says "unimproved" road. The beach is very pretty and one can find some crabs and birds there.

This beach was the quietest of the three Kona area beaches that we visited, probably because the road into the park is terrible. Seriously, terrible. We had a rented Jeep and did fine, but I would never attempt this with a vehicle that didn’t have high clearance. The beach is good size and has some shade available. As with most of the Kona area beaches, the surf was rough and swimmers should use a great deal of caution. In addition to the solitude of this beach, the highlight for us was seeing two Hawaiian monk seals playing on the beach and in the water. These seals are endangered-about 1500 left around Hawaii and only 5 or so around the big island. There is some signage with info about the seals at the beach and there were volunteers from a conservation group there to keep people a safe distance away from the seals. Seeing these endangered animals was one of the highlights of our trip to the big island.
