Ernakulam
inΒ Kerala.
It
is
a
major
temple
that
people
have
high
regards
for.
It
is
also
called
as
the
Ernakulathappan
Temple.
This
means
Lord
of
Ernakulum.
The
temple
is
located
within
Durbar
Hall
ground
in
the
port
city
ofΒ Cochin.
The
devotees
believe
that
Lord
Shiva,
the
presiding
deity
of
the
temple,
is
protector
of
the
city.
Here,
the
statue
of
Lord
Shiva
in
sanctum
sanctorum
is
worshipped
in
Gauri
Shankar
form.
Swayambhoo
is
the
name
given
to
the
lingam
that
is
in
the
main
sanctum.
There
is
a
small
shrine
of
Kirthamoorthy
on
the
north
side
and
a
shrine
of
Lord
Ganesha
on
the
south
side
of

temple.

behind
the
main
sanctum

placed
an
idol
of
Goddess
Parvati.

per
the
religious
belief,
the
blessings
of
Lord
Ayappa
and
Lord
Nagaraja
are
showered
upon
the
devotees
visiting
it.
Ernakulam
Shiva
Temple
was
one
of
the
seven
temples
of
the
royal
Kochi
Maharajas.
As
per
legend,
the
antiquity
of
Ernakulam
Shiva
Temple
dates
back
to
times
of
Pandavas
&
Kauravas
and
gets
associated
with
the
epic
Mahabharata.
It
finds
mention
in
Sangam
literature.
In
fact,
history
of
the
temple
has
a
deep
connection
with
history
of
the
city.
Ernakulam
Shiva
Temple
is
also
believed
to
be
one
of
the
major
temples
belonging
to
Chera
dynasty.
The
recorded
history
of
the
temple
dates
back
to
16th
century
when
the
Dutch
conquered
Kochi
and
acquired
Fort
Kochi.
At
that
time,
the
Kochi
rulers
had
to
move
their
capital
to
Ernakulum.
They
built
a
beautiful
palace
that
overlooked
pond
of
the
temple.
They
considered
and
declared
Ernakulam
Shiva
Temple
as
protector
of
the
city.
The
temple
was
built
in
1846
AD
under
active
patronage
of
Diwan
Sri
Edakkunni
Sankara
Warrior.
