The
Church
in
Memory
of
Queen
Louise
is
a
historical
building
in
Kaliningrad,
one
of
the
city’s
landmarks.
In
the
past
it
was
a
Lutheran
church,
now
the
Kaliningrad
Regional
Puppet
Theater
is
located
in
the
church
building.
Address:
Pobeda
Avenue,
1
(in
the
territory
of
Central
Park).
The
church
was
built
in
memory
of
Queen
Louise
of
Prussia
(1776-1810).
The
author
of
the
project
is
the
architect
Friedrich
Heitmann.
The
church
was
built
in
1899-1901.
On
the
south
side
of
the
church,
a
priest's
house
and
a
house
for
confirmers
were
added,
similar
in
style
to
the
church
itself
(not
preserved).
The
church
building
was
damaged
during
the
war
and
stood
in
ruins
for
a
long
time
without
use.
In
the
sixties,
it
was
planned
to
demolish
it,
but
the
church
was
saved
by
the
architect
of
the
State
Design
Institute
of
Civil
Engineering,
Yuri
Vaganov,
who
developed
a
project
for
converting
the
former
church
building
into
a
puppet
theater
building.
In
accordance
with
this
project,
the
church
was
restored
and
began
to
operate
in
a
new
capacity
in
1976.
The
exterior
of
the
restored
building
is
largely
consistent
with
its
pre-war
appearance,
while
the
interior
has
been
completely
redesigned
to
better
suit
the
building's
new
function.
The
remains
of
the
vaults
were
demolished,
and
the
church
premises
were
divided
into
two
floors
with
modern
ceilings.
The
first
floor
is
used
as
an
exhibition
hall,
the
second
floor
is
a
performance
hall.
