Fort
No.
6
"Queen
Louise"
(Konigin
Luise
bei
Juditten)
is
one
of
the
forts
in
the
inner
defensive
ring
of
Königsberg.
In
the
middle
of
the
19th
century,
the
“Night
Featherbed”
began
to
be
built
around
the
city,
as
the
townspeople
half-jokingly
called
a
ring
of
forts
designed
to
stop
the
enemy
at
distant
approaches.
Twelve
forts
and
five
so-called
fortresses
were
built.
“literary
forts”,
and
the
first,
with
200-300
people
in
the
garrison,
were
given
names
in
honor
of
famous
historical
figures
of
Germany.
Fort
No.
6
“Queen
Louise”
covered
the
railway
and
highways
to
Pillau
(Baltiysk).
It
was
built
in
1875
and
was
a
small
fortress
surrounded
by
a
dry
moat,
with
the
necessary
set
of
ravelins,
scarps,
counter-scarps
and
other
achievements
of
fortification
science,
allowing
one
to
repel
enemy
attacks
for
several
months.
Upon
completion
of
construction,
in
connection
with
the
improvement
of
offensive
weapons
and
combat
tactics,
the
entire
system
of
Koenigsberg
forts
was
subjected
to
improvements
and
strengthening
of
defensive
functions
several
times.
The
latest
improvements
were
made
in
the
30s
and
40s
of
the
20th
century.
On
April
8,
in
a
battle
northwest
of
Koenigsberg,
Alexander
Kosmodemyansky’s
battery,
having
overcome
a
minefield
and
dense
barrage
fire,
was
the
first
to
break
into
the
Queen
Louise
fort
and,
having
inflicted
significant
damage
on
the
enemy
with
powerful
fire,
forced
the
fort’s
garrison
to
capitulate.
