Famous among the Christian community in Kerala, with a number of conventions held every year, this would be a devotee's most loved place. Aptly located on the banks of the backwaters in one of the most picturesque locations in Kerala, the church is known for the miracles and blessings delivered by its patron saint on the believers who ask with a sincere heart. To reach this church , you can reach Thiruvalla and take a direct public transport bus to edathua. If by car , there are many routes ..one from Thiruvalla. Others from alleppey or chenganassery and even from the parumala side. I have been here two or three times but mostly at nights during the feast which is usually in May. It is visited by christians and non-christians alike. Must visit if you are on pilgrimage and if nearby.

Built in 1810, the church is believed to possess miraculous healing powers. Praying at this holy site has healed many of mental disorders and other medical issues. Edathua church is not that far from parumala church(one of the most famous churches in kerala) , niranam church(est by st thomas in AD 54) or even the paliakkara church(200 yrs old = oldest in Thiruvalla ) maybe within 10-20 km of all these churches. all these churches are listed under Thiruvalla in tripadvisor except edathua church and all can be reached from Thiruvalla. Aptly located on the banks of the backwaters in one of the most picturesque locations in Kerala, the church is known for the miracles and blessings delivered by its patron saint on the believers who ask with a sincere heart. I was totally cowered by its huge size, and since my visit coincided with no particular event the church was relatively empty letting me stay for the few moments I wanted, in complete silence admiring the paintings and structure reminiscent of most of the catholic churches in this region. I guess to truly get the feel of the church u should go during the feast when it is highly charged with people praying and being totally submissive to the power high above. This is where my blood comes from - Edathua! While I don't blame the other reviewers I thought I must add a few more details to their accounts. First of all the church is dedicated to St George. The church celebrates it's annual feast on (or around) the 7th May. I used to be there during my summer holidays and I have a myriad of childhood memories - of pilgrims from the south of Kerala, of small market shops, of trinkets and treats that were special around this time, of fire-crackers,and of much more. In those days we had to reach Thiruvala by train and then take a taxi. A country boat would take us home from the church. Now you can practically reach any part of this water-logged village by car. The church is no doubt the highlight. Walk around the church yard, into the church itself, and even visit the cemetery at one corner. Admire the metallic flag post. Then walk around the village to - particularly the area behind the church. Not the oldest church in the region but definitely a fine specimen of the years gone by.

St. George Forane Church, popularly known as Edathua Church is situated in Alappuzha and is dedicated to St George. It is believed that prayers and offerings at this church would help heal diseases including mental disorders.  Built in 1810, it is among the prime attractions in this tranquil backwater district. The annual feast (May 5th, 6th and 7th) of the church sees believers from across the southern parts of the country, throng in great numbers to seek blessings and relief.

(Translated by Google) Edathwa St. George Forona Church is a famous pilgrimage center with a rich tradition and tradition of over two centuries. It is the knowledge and experience imparted by the previous generation to uphold the beliefs that make Edathwa an inter-religious pilgrimage center. From the first consideration given to the faithful from Tamil Nadu in the church in Kerala, the vows, the white string, the leaves of the teak tree, the trade fair and the stones carried to cure diseases are the factors that strengthen the faith of the Edathva Church. There are many stories and legends behind it. There is a story of Vishwat behind the vow string that the pilgrims receive after seeing the relics of St. Georgys Sahada. An opener from Kanyakumari at a church frequented by Tamil believers could not find the money to attend the festival once due to lack of fish. However, despite the hardships and determination, they reached Edathwa on foot to see the statue. When it was time to go back, they returned with a string of vows tied from the Lord. From fishing for openers back home It is said to have generated a lot of revenue. Later, on their way back to the church from Tamil Nadu, the devotees take the vows and tie them up in the boats they use. The strings that give the blessing of the saint are cut into one and a half chan lengths and then given. There is also a belief that if we tie the string after praying for the desire of the mind and the string breaks, then what we wanted will come true. This time two devotees from Tamil Nadu offered the vows. Along with the Edathwa pilgrimage, the trade fair associated with the festival has a place in history. There is a story behind this reunion. In the past, most of our cargo trade was concentrated in ports. At that time, trade groups had come to Alappuzha from present day Kanyakumari and Nagercoil areas. One night during a voyage, the merchants lost control of their boat due to wind and rain and lost control of the boat. The merchants in the stray boat heard a ghost. The journey continued on the instructions and reached near the Edathwa church gate. History has it that by the time the boat landed at the dock, they had regained their lost nayamp. They returned to the church with prayers and vows. Later, it is said that the next generation started their business after going to church and making vows. It is believed that the vow poured on the flagpole of the church will cure diseases and bring peace of mind. On the day of the festival, silk is first wrapped around the flagpole before the flag is flown. Later, at the time of flag hoisting, believers would pour vow oil on the flagpole. Pilgrims collect oil from silk as part of their faith. It is believed that vow oil can be used to heal wounds and ailments in the body. Believers complete the rites by offering vows to those, including children, and placing them around the flagpole. Believers take the leaves of the teak tree in the courtyard to their homes as a miracle cure and a cure for Mara diseases. It is believed that bathing in teak water or applying oil on the body will cure all Mara ailments. Believers say that carrying a stone around the church and praying can bring relief from a number of ailments, including headaches. People of various religions also go to church and take vows. Believers offer offerings of saplings, bananas and umbrellas to the idol as part of their faith. The tradition of this place is as old as Christianity itself. In those days the faithful of Edathua region used to go for worship at the Niranam church found by St.thomas, the Apostle. And then to the Champakulam church established in A.D 427.With the advent of the Chempakassery regime at Ambalapuzha principality many christians migrated to Kuttanad from ancient christian centres like Kuravalangadu and Kudamaloor. As the number of the faithful increased the need for church at Edathua was dreamed. The foundation stone of the Edathua Church was laid on september 29, 1810 on the feast of St. Michael, the Archangel with the canonical consent of Bishop Reymond, the vicar Apostolate of the Varapuzha Vicarate under the Kodungallor Archdiocese. As the number of parishioners and pilgrims increased it was decided to construct a more spacious church. So the construction of a church called "cemetery church" was begun in 1824, That church was blessed on May 6,1824(Medam 23,1015) by Dr.Luduvikose Marthini, the Co-adjuster bishop of varapuzha. The foundation stone of the present magnificant church was laid on November 15,1839(10th Vrichikam 1015) by the Co-adjutor bishop of varapuzha. The madbhaha was completed in 1861

Edathua is in the Kuttanad region. It lies below sea level: agricultural land (rice farms) in this region are separated from big and small rivers by high mud levees (bunds called Puravaramp). Farmers and agricultural workers build their dwellings on reclaimed land by expanding upon these levees around these paddy fields known as padam. These levees are also often planted with coconut trees, a major commercial crop in the region. The area attracts a lot of foreign tourists.

St. George Forane Church is the major pilgrim centre is located in edathua panchayath, Alappuzha District. Very beautiful place and peaceful atmosphere......good vibes.....🙏🙏🙏 The annual feast of the St. George Forane Catholic church starts on 27 April with the hoisting of the flag and which concludes on 7 May. During the time of feast, the statue of St. George, decked in gold regalia, is carried out and placed on the dais at the center of the church. Many Devotees from other states are the main contributors to this Church feast. The feast, known as "Edathua Perunnal", helped Edathua to become popular in Kuttanad, Alappuzha district.
