The grandeur of Chola dynasty is still intact in the form of divine Adi Kumbeswarar temple. It’s an exquisite Dravidian style masterpiece which was renovated by Govinda Dikshitar, chief of Achutha Nayakar of Thanjavur in 16th century AD. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple of Adi Kumbeswarar is also considered as the 26th Paadal Petra Sthalam during Chola Period. Devotees from all over the world take bath in the Potramarai tank during Mahamaham festival which is celebrated once in every 12 years (It is called as Kumbh Mela in North). The divine Shiva Lingam will blow your heart away, it is narrow at the top like a needle and broad at the bottom. On the left side of Kumbeswarar, his consort Goddess Mangalambika showers her divine blessings to the devotees. Apart from the main shrines, shrines of Lord Murugan, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kiratamurati and others adorn the temple premises. When the curtain of life of the world was about to fall due to Tsunami, Lord Brahma asked Lord Shiva to know from where he had to start the creation of mankind. Lord Shiva suggested that sand collected from various sacred places should be placed in a magic pot and then leave the pot in water. The pot stood in the place where the great temple of Kumbeswarar stands today. Lord Shiva shot an arrow on the pot and the nectar from the pot spread to all directions which was already mixed with sand and became a Linga. That Lingam is called Kumbeswarar.

Mangalambigai udanurai Kumbeswarar temple located in the centre of Kumbakonam is a must visit. It was so divine when we went there for 6pm pooja. Lots of people attend this pooja and the priests perform harathi with atmost sincerity. The complex is very big with two entrances one with Big temple tower and another without a tower. There is an elephant too inside the temple near to Mottai gopuram(entrance without Gopuram). You can buy bananas and get blessed . Parking is quite a difficult one. If you’re early , you can easily find a spot near Mottai gopuram. If not you have leave it somewhere near to the temple

The temple complex covers an area of 30,181 sq ft (2,803.9 m2) and houses four gateway towers known as gopurams. The tallest is the eastern tower, with 11 stories and a height of 128 feet (39 m) The temple has numerous shrines, with those of Kumbeswarar and Mangalambigai Amman being the most prominent. The temple complex houses many halls; the most notable is the sixteen-pillared hall built during the Vijayanagar period that has all the 27 stars and 12 zodiacs sculpted in a single stone. The temple has six daily rituals at various times from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and twelve yearly festivals on its calendar, with the Masi Magam festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Maasi (February - March) being the most prominent. The present masonry structure was built during the Chola dynasty in the 9th century, while later expansions are attributed to Vijayanagar rulers of the Thanjavur Nayaks of the 16th century. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Adi Kumbeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, located in the town of Kumbakonam. Shiva is worshiped as Adi Kumbeswarar, and is represented by the lingam. His consort Parvati is depicted as Mangalambigai Amman. It is believed the name of the town is derived from the name of this deity. There is also a Kumbha mela celebrated every 12 years here. A must visit temple while in Kumbhakonam.

It was a Devine feeling after having the Darshanam of Lord Shiva worshipped as Adi Kumbeswar, This 7th century temple has great huge stone pillared Mandapams, Garbha griha and a magnificent main tower. The main tower can’t be seen closely from near due to occupation on both sides by lengthy corridors. Great feel after having the darshan. Must visit place for Hindus.

The name adi kumbeshwar came from, adi represents first and kumba means pot. Belief that this is the existence of the human race. The andal ( elephant) is very attractive with her dance.

Temple has such a nice history to it but the temple priests are too adamant. The reason for 5 stars is I have complained to the temple office and after 2 months I got a call from them taking action on the priest. That was something I didn't expect.

Shri Adi Kumbeswarar temple, situated in the centre of Kumbakonam is the grand Shiva temple with a majestic east Gopuram. On the left side of main sanctum is Shri Mangalambigai Amman temple. Had darshan during the divine mangala arathi in the evening. Apparently the town derives its name from the presiding deity. Car parking available on the northern side of temple.

Today we worshipped Lord Kumbeshwarar and Mangalambika. Vibrations were very strong inside the sanctum. One devotee from Karnataka sang a Tamil song Karpagavallinin in front of Amma Mangalambika. It was mesmerising

Today morning visited this temple. A very good temple dedicated to lord Shiva situated in the busy street of Kumbakonam. In the entrance one can see an Elephant with dancing moment because of bell mounted on the elephant neck. Inside the temple can see a lingam of cone type. Once you take a darshan can see Ambal with a pleasant look🙏🏻. Must visit temple. It's a Motta kopuram meaning that the entrance don't have proper construction and no kalasam.

(Visited in September 2023) - Adi Kumbheswarar temple of Kumbhakonam is the primary Saiva shrine of the temple City. It is associated with the legend of Lord Shiva as Adi Kumbheswara, and the large temple is a blissful place.

Its a beautiful, ancient temple. Lord Shiva - Aadhi kumbeshwar is in swayambu form ( moolavar - main deity) . A huge temple with a huge tank (teertham) . Goddess Parvati is Mangalambikai . The Pradosha pooja is magnificent and is a unique, heart filling experience. Temple is well maintained and kept clean ( as compared to many other temples in Kumbakonam) Early evening ( 4 pm to 5 pm ) is a good time to visit , its not too crowded. Evening ( saayaratchai) Deeparadhana is after 5 pm

Paadal Petra Sthalam and Thiruppugazh. Located in the centre of city. Traffic will be there during evening, good to have early morning or early evening visit else we can take auto to have dharshan at any time. Temple complex, Gopuram and compound are huge. Other main temples are also located just walkable distance. Have a nice dharshan. A huge temple of Lord Shiva with really huge pillars all over the temple. There's an elephant at the entrance and is a special attraction, as it keeps dancing without music and also it's not even tied.

This 9th century Temple - 1200 years old - is well preserved with well-maintained calm & sanctity. The main Nandi facing Maheswara deity is very finely carved & well-maintained and temple is in the heart of Kumbakonam Shape of Shiva linga was different, more conical shape, padal Petra sthalangal, Temple is one of the Sakthi Peedam sthalam (Manthira peedam), Blessed to have had the opportunity to visit and worship.
