Tucked in the beautiful, heritage-rich city of Kandy, Balaji Dosai stands as a unique concept Indian restaurant, delighting locals and tourists alike for a decade. This place isn't just about dining; it's about experiencing the richness of Indian cuisine blended perfectly with the charm of Sri Lanka. From the moment you step in, the commitment to quality and service is evident. The staff's prompt, professional, and friendly service sets the tone for a memorable meal. The ambience is inviting, reflecting a blend of tradition and modernity, making it an ideal spot for both casual and special occasions. What truly sets Balaji Dosai apart is its dedication to serving nutritious, well-prepared meals at fair prices. One of the best options for vegetarians visiting the central part of Sri Lanka. The place has South Indian breakfast and the taste is also good. The place is mostly crowded and is on a busy street.

Foods are tasty and biggest issue is it's hard to find a table here. Due high footfall there always a queue. 1st you are required to place your order through country and then they will deliver the food to your table. When you placing the order, they will give a number with a stand, keep that stand on your table so once the food is prepared waiter will find your table with that number and deliver it. Washroom is available at 1st floor. Washroom are 2/5. Not pleasant. You can park your vehicle in front of the hotel but most of the time parking is restricted. Food price also reasonable.

A pure vegetarian Indian restaurant in the heart of Kandy. Very well maintained, cleanly and orderly - unlike many other similar restaurants in the country. Preferred by both the tourists and locals, mostly due to their service quality, food quality and excellent location. Acceptance of card payments is commendable. No parking available close by unless you are really lucky, but there are enough public parkings around. Nicely branded storefront. You feel welcomed from the time you step in. Except a few odd ones all staff are customer oriented and waiting to assist. The food isn't superior in aroma or flavour but are fresh and well presented. The portions aren't large but sufficient, may be helpful in minimizing wastage. Menu is simple and standard. Nice interior design and space for around 30-40 to dine in at a time (downstairs). Dosai was fresh but not hot and crispy. The same goes with idly. Masala chai is full of local spices mainly cinnamon, more like a localized version of Indian masala chai. We weren't allowed to go upstairs for breakfast, which is marked only for red token numbers - maybe it was too early in the morning. But I sincerely hope they aren't committing the same mistake as in many other places of interest in the country - differential treatment for foreigners and locals. Highly recommended for all vegetarians, and anyone visiting the temple of tooth relic on their way back. Due to limited space inside, suggest not to carry in heavy luggages. Looking forward to see more outlets outside Kandy, specially in Colombo. All the best!

🥰 Testiest Indian Food Restaurant in Kandy 🥰 When we are visiting Temple Of The Tooth Relic usually we are going early morning, we have no time for breakfast and also we have to be vegetarian. So when we are leaving we’re so hungry. This Balaji Dosai - Kandy it’s a vegetarian Indian restaurant so it’s a perfect place to have breakfast to anyone. Place is bit small and they have a good crowd too. So sometimes you have to wait for couple of minutes for your order. But the food is really nice. They have local and foreign customers too. No second thoughts I can highly recommend Balaji Dosai - Kandy for everyone. Prices are reasonable too. #ulunduvada #idli #breakfast #balajidosai #indianfood

My last visit was disappointed with my experience. Although I had good experiences in the past, my recent visit was a letdown. The dosas were overcooked and the quality was low. Additionally, the service was poor and did not meet my expectations. As a regular customer, it's important to receive consistent quality and service, which was lacking during my visit. I hope that Balaji Dosai can take this feedback seriously and improve the quality of their food and service standards. I believe that they can regain their reputation as a reliable dosa shop in Kandy if they make the necessary changes.

Place might get packed on weekends but got enough space to for at least 100 people. The food is good and they got their own stuff such as mini idly. Place is very clean and nice and The service team is very good. No dedicated parking but you can park in the road based on the availability. If you are a local you may not gonna get balcony seats since they kinda make they available for foreigners.

Fantastic place to eat some favourite South Indian and Sri lankan style vegetarian food. After long walk through in kandy, we found this place busy and rush, yet got upstairs very quiet, clean place with wonderful service. Food is well balanced with spice, first seem portion is not enough but is more than we expected for our ordinary hunger after long walk. We try to find a five star restuarent, and we not disappointed by their service and food. One star is less, as they need to improve more in cleaning and organised the way people been served. Thinking current situation in Srilanka its understandable because people look for cheaper option, but I would say we got more than we paid.

Only serves authentic vegetarian food here, the outlet sells some Indian sweets as well. Had an 'uttapam' and idli for breakfast. The food is taste good but comes with very limited chutney varieties. Anyhow I like the milk tea. The shop is very clean, had an ample of seating area at ground and 1st floor for customers..

best vegitarian option in kandy . Super friendly staff with excellent customer service. They are very attentive to customers . Dosai here is the best I have tried in Kandy. So delicious. This place is an average hygiene place but under the covid situation they stick to health guidelines. Just avoid usually busy hours here because it is normally crowdy most of the time.

Best dosa and wads we had during our trip to Srilanka. Place is bit crowded where you order in the counter first and get a number allotted to your order. Food is of good quality and taste. They also have service on first floor. One of the best Indian Dosa restaurants in Srilanka can be said about this place. If you happen to be in Kandy or on a visit to Tooth Relic temple or Kandy lake - do visit this place. You will love the food. Will definitely visit during my next visit to Kandy. Tea and coffee are served in English style, you can ask for Indian style with milk also for which charge is different.

Balaji Dosa in Kandy is a culinary gem that left me captivated by its exceptional taste and unique dining experience. Great Taste: The heart of Balaji Dosa lies in its remarkable taste. From the first bite to the last, every dosa is a symphony of flavors that delights the palate. The expertly crafted menu showcases the culinary mastery that sets this establishment apart. Crowd Endorsement: The bustling crowd at Balaji Dosa serves as a testament to the greatness of its food. The vibrant atmosphere, filled with satisfied diners, creates an infectious energy that heightens the overall dining experience. The popularity of the place is a clear indicator of its culinary excellence. Token System Efficiency: Balaji Dosa employs an efficient token system that streamlines the ordering process. Customers order first, receive a token, and then proceed to pay. This organized approach ensures a smooth and prompt service, allowing diners to focus on savoring the delightful dishes. Order and Pay Early System: One unique aspect is the "order and pay early" system. This approach adds a sense of trust and convenience to the dining experience. It allows patrons to enjoy their meal without the hassle of settling the bill immediately, enhancing the overall comfort and enjoyment. Diverse Menu: Balaji Dosa offers a diverse menu beyond its signature dosas. From tantalizing chutneys to flavorful sambar, each accompaniment complements the main dishes, providing a well-rounded gastronomic experience. In conclusion, Balaji Dosa in Kandy stands out not only for its delectable taste but also for the vibrant ambiance fueled by a satisfied crowd. Balaji Dosa is a must-visit for those seeking a culinary journey that goes beyond the ordinary. Highly recommended.

Great food! Not a vegan fan but this was tasty. I made a mistake and ordered the Cheese Onion Masala Dosa, should have ordered the Cheese Onion (no Masala as I'm not a Masala fan). They also gave me a fork and knife as I obviously didn't know what I'm doing. Highly recommended place to try.

A nice restaurant run by family. They are devoted ISCON people. Food is simple yet delicious. I stayed in Candy for many days and visted this restaurant many times. If you are looking for simple, SATTVIK yet delicious food it a place to visit. Those who seek Jain food will sure love this place. They have a small Krishna temple in restaurant which is also beautiful.

Delicious food (Indian thali FTW!), TERRIBLE service. We ordered a few items from the menu. The waiter was coming back a few times to reconfirm what we ordered. Unfortunately he decided he will serve 1 thing at a time and in which sequence. We couldn't get next thing before we finished the previous. After 50 minutes I still couldn't get s coffee that I was very clear I wanted at the beginning and reconfirmed this each time he asked. Finally we just paid for 3 things they managed to serve during the first hour and walked out. And it wasn't busy - there were literally 5 people including us.

Since the covid 19 came, loads of restruants were empty, but some restruants still had their food and good service. My mother had ordered some lemon rice, and it was the best rice we ever had! (Translated by Google) While in Kandy we were looking for a place with good food and thanks to google we got here. It was shot in 10. The place is very inconspicuous, it is easy to overlook it, and the food inside is sensational. "Vegetarian" eatery, but I, as a meat eater, was very pleased. The cost of "Indian thali" is 500 rupees or around PLN 10. We would like such a dish near the bar 😉 Very nice lady who speaks English well. I recommend it with a clear conscience. (Original) Będąc w Kandy szukaliśmy lokalu z dobrym jedzeniem i dzięki google trafiliśmy tutaj. Był to strzał w 10. Lokal bardzo niepozorny, łatwo go przeoczyć, a jedzenie w środku rewelacyjne. Knajpka "vegetarianska", ale ja jako mięsożerca byłem bardzo zadowolony. Koszt "Indian thali" to 500 rupii czyli koło 10 zł. U nas takie danie by kosztowało koło stówki 😉 Bardzo przemiła pani, dobrze mówiąca po angielsku. Polecam z czystym sumieniem.

The granny in charge is sweet and hilarious. After ordering samosa, paratha, and dosa she only served the first two. “Where’s the dosa!?” I asked, she said “You won’t be able to finish it” 🙂 Seeing me eating with a spoon, she moved it away from me and said “dip and eat with hands!” 🙂🙂 Anyways food was delicious and cheap as others have said.

One of the best meals I’ve eaten in Sri Lanka. It was empty when we entered; we were the only ones in the restaurant, but don’t let it put you off. The family was so sweet and welcoming. If I had more time in Kandy, I would have eaten here again. Ordered the Indian Thali and every dish was very flavourful and very filling.

AMAZING family-run restaurant; it was empty when my wife and I entered but that was a blessing in disguise as their food was unbelievably delicious and they were all so kind as to talk to us during dinner. This is one of the FEW times when a huge crowd of tourists waiting at the door doesn’t mean it will be delicious. They don’t rush out the food so they can take care in making sure it tastes just right and I never leave reviews. Most def a great place near the lake.

This is about the recently opened branch in Kirilapone, Colombo 5. My usual vegetarian local breakfast place has closed so, when I saw this one open (right opposite Kirilapone market) I thought of giving it a go. It turned out to be very good! The dosai is of the thicker more chewy variety, but it’s delicious and the same size as the paper ones. The pol symbol, paripu and chickpea curry were all of a more refined cuisine, very tasty and superior to the usual watery stuff you get at these places. The way it was served; on individual platters and bowls, rather than a metal bucket going from table to table, was a better arrangement in these times of contagion too. The price was very reasonable, the staff were friendly and quick and the masala tea was really authentic.

Very nice place to eat vegetarian meals. Awesome food. Friendly environment for foreigner. I wish they have more space. Seating capacity is low so quickly filled up. Some foods are extra oily but delicious. Price is adorable compared to its quality. So 5 stars from me

Mediocre food, the price is good for its quality. However, after we paid our bill, the waiter took our change which was equivalent to 30% of our bill. He literally hold the change next to his chest and didn’t even let us touch it. We are happy to pay tips/service charge but not in a way that was forced. Clearly he saw us being foreigners/ tourists and he felt entitled to take whatever he can. I Would Not recommend this restaurant to anyone else purely because of the waiter’s behaviour. Mind you that he wasn’t delivering a decent service as well.

This is the ultimate place to have dosa in Kandy. The food is very delicious and the place is always busy, so you just know that it has to be good. Would visit again anytime.

  • 3/5 Vladislav T. 2 years ago on Google
I must admit that the food tastes good. I went there three times and each time I had a masala dosa (with potatoes). They also give three sides with the dosa. But the place looks really dirty and not hygienic. I think it does need some renovation, though it is always crowded. The staff seems friendly.

Amazing dosa. The staff were great and the people helping clear the tables would help you and bring your food if you look lost, for a tip of course. Great place for dinner for any traveller in Kandy.

It is one of the best places to have vegetarian foods with indian and Sri Lankan touch. The place is clean and the staff is friendly. Price is reasonable. Food is tasty. But milkshakes are bit surgery. One of the staff member was keep asking for a tip. He deserved a tip for his work buy bit annoyed by him. Still decided to give 5 stars. Because the experience was good other than that. Washrooms are in the upstairs and washrooms are clean.

A good place to experience a truly Indian Dosai in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The food was well prepared and the service was so quick and friendly. The atmosphere is so good and the cleanliness is so high. Prices are a bit high but worth every penny that I spent on it.

Balaji Dosai is an unique, concept restaurant in the heart of Kandy, a beautiful heritage city in the hills of the Central region of Sri Lanka. If you follow a vegetarian diet and want to taste delicious food with the perfect and complete flavor, we recommend you to visit Balaji Dosa.

Balaji Dosai in Kandy is undoubtedly the best place for vegetarian Indian food in the city. If you're a fan of dosas, this is a must-visit destination. With an impressive variety of dosas on offer, Balaji Dosai is a true haven for dosa lovers. The menu at Balaji Dosai boasts an array of mouthwatering dosas, each one more delicious than the last. From the classic Kara Dosa to the indulgent Butter Dosa and the delicate Paper Dosa, the choices are plentiful and guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds. The dosas are reasonably priced, with most options ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 700, making it an excellent value for the delectable flavors they offer. The quality of the dosas at Balaji Dosai is exceptional. The dosa batter is perfectly fermented, resulting in dosas that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The flavors are well-balanced, and the accompanying chutneys and sambar complement the dosas beautifully. Whether you prefer a spicy kick or a milder taste, Balaji Dosai has something for everyone. Apart from the delightful dosas, the restaurant provides a welcoming and comfortable dining experience. The ambiance is pleasant, and the staff members are friendly and attentive. The service is efficient, ensuring that you receive your order in a timely manner and have a pleasant dining experience. For vegetarians and dosa enthusiasts visiting Kandy, Balaji Dosai is an absolute gem. The wide variety of dosas, reasonable prices, and delicious flavors make it the go-to place for a satisfying vegetarian meal. The combination of authentic Indian flavors, quality ingredients, and friendly service make Balaji Dosai a standout eatery in the city.

Got the cheese and onion dosa; it was very heavy on the onion/shallots. The curry was good, not too spicy. Food came quick.

A busy place in the morning. The food is good and their dosa are large in size. Inside is very clean and nice. The service is very good, they even ask if we need more curries. No parking in front of the restaurant, have to park somewhere else.

Place is clean and modern looking. A vegetarian only restaurant very close to the Temple of the tooth. Hence parking can be tricky. Liked their ghee dosai and the sweets. Masala Chai didn’t taste authentic though.
