Finally, I found my first Jain vegetarian restaurant in Sri Lanka. It is owned by lovely Mrs Kumari & her daughter. All food here is 100% vegetarian and without onions and garlic (allium free). It is wonderful to be in a proper Jain veg place where food option is not limited to veg fried rice/noodles/sandwich. The restaurant ambiance is no-frills, but you’ll get homemade goodness. + great location, 10-15 mins walk from Kandy bus station + friendly and down to earth owner and chef + food is tasty and of great value. I ordered masala chai to drink + for take away, jeera (cumin) rice and lady fingers all for LKR 1300!! I was expecting a curried lady fingers (bhindi masala) but the final product was a deep fried dish… I should have asked :) but it was tasty so all is good Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for Indian vegetarian, as well as good value meal in Kandy.

This restaurant made the best food I’ve tried in Sry Lanka in two months!!! It’s not expensive and it’s worth it! This beautiful and kind woman takes the time to explain everything she has on her menu and brings your food with such joy and sympathy.

So far the best food we ever had in Sri Lanka! We went to the restaurant twice this week and both times we ordered the thali, which has an amazing variety and is so tasty! The lady who runs the place is also amazing, we loved chatting with her while we ate our delicious dinner. We will definitely come back when we are in Kandy again!

Long story short: Don‘t hesitate coming here, it‘s fantastic. :) First we weren‘t sure if Nagalingam‘s place was closed but then we got welcomed by this wonderful lady that owns the shop. The food was incredibly delicious - we had the vegan Thali for two and the dishes just kept coming. Mouthwatering curries, Dal, fresh Samosas, Kotti & a small Dessert was all included. Coming back to Kandy, this would be our first stop to have dinner again. 🫶

Oh wow, that was really tasty!! We had the special thali for 2 and it was amazing, filling and very reasonably priced. Well spiced, unusual but really tasty. Really friendly lady that served us as well.

Delicious food, great service of the „granny” that will be very happy if you leave your plate empty! Its like family dinner. The proposed serving for 2 ppl on the menu is huge, we didn’t manage the last bites.

Simple and nice place run by a very friendly family. We loved the food a lot. Indian thali would let you try everything by small pieces. And the prices are just incredibly low. Definitely the place to come.

The owner and her daughter are a perfect team - the service was excellent and the food was the best we have eaten in Sri Lanka :)) You can choose different levels of spiciness (low-middle-hot) which was very perfect for me :) The owner is very polite and we had a very good talk! (She speaks pretty good englisch) Unfortunately we left already kandy otherwise we would go there again!!! Highly recommended!

I went there in the evening with my girlfriend. It was late but we were warmly welcomed. The food was great. We got a Special Thali in order to try many dishes. Tasteful, diverse and big quantity! Together with great food we also had an amazing conversation with the owner and some regulars.

Very delicious vegetarian or vegan food, we ordered the special menu for two people and it was super delicious. Especially the samosas and fried pineapple and other fried things are so so good. The owner is super nice and she told us some interesting stories. Overall a great experience. So if you are in Kandy and want to eat some vegetarian food in a local place, go there you won't regret it 😉

Delicious Thali - a set of different small dishes. The mushroom and jackfruit are my favourite - very well done dishes, with the right spices and savoury herbs. And we love the Amma that so sweetly attend to our order.

Very delicious Thali and friendly old woman who is cooking amazing and talking with guests about life. The atmosphere is not very cozy but typically for cheap sri lankan restaurants. Would definetely eat there again!

Such amazing food, authentic Thai plates all beautifully cooked and presented, extremely well priced and such lovely service it’s a whole family cooking and running it together. If you’re in kandy it’s a must visit for dinner.

We really enjoyed an authentic Indian Thali, the staff were friendly and accommodating to our needs. Would recommend 😊

Food itself was tasty, was a fair price. The images on the wall of the samosas didn’t match what we were served. Could have done with a little more dhal as well mainly because it was tasty and we had much more rice than curry. The curry and rice was luke warm. The service was not what we had expected. Once shown to our seat we ordered and then waited an hour for our food to come. When the lady walked past she told us 10 more minutes multiple times. The menu did provide a warning that the food would take 30 minutes but an hour to wait was just a little too much. While we were eating the lady tried to sell us curry powder and engage in conversation. This is not for everyone, I’m sure they were just being friendly but sometimes it’s nice to just be left alone to eat in peace.

This is a small restaurant but you might miss it while you pass through the street. Nonetheless , once you tried this indian cusine you probably unforgetable. Whatsoever in terms of price, and taste especially if you 're vegetarian. If you're tourist and also stay in Kandy. This is a taster's choice.

Really amazing food! Had the Special Thali and it was great to try all of the different flavours. And the owner and her daughter are the cutest ever - can highly recommend ❤️

Me and boyfriend ate at this place and both got the Thali tray. The curries were absolutely delicious !! The service was speedy (especially considering it was obviously made to order and very fresh) and the lady who served our food was really friendly and kind. If we were in Kandy longer we would definitely have come here again. Would really recommend!

I had a really great meal here in a small, almost unremarkable corner of Kandy. Definitely worth stopping by. Special requests were also fulfilled and there was also a nice chat with the lady of the house.

Great experience in this hidden restaurant. Such a kind and heartwarming family , you will almost feel like you are invited to their home. 🥹 The food was fresh and flavorful and more than enough to re-fuel after a long day of exploring Kandy.

At the first sight, the place looks close. But we’ve been welcomed by the owner of the restaurant, a friendly women who takes really care of the customers. She took time to chat with us, which was really nice. We had food, really cheap by the way, but fresh and homemade (we asked for low spices, and it was). It was really good and I highly recommend this place to enjoy Indian food !

This place is definitely a hidden gem. Is a family run restaurant with delicious food. We had the Indian Thali. Food ia very very tasty and the service was perfect. They also ask how spicy you want it. Prices are very affordable.

One of the best meals I’ve eaten in Sri Lanka. It was empty when we entered; we were the only ones in the restaurant, but don’t let it put you off. The family was so sweet and welcoming. If I had more time in Kandy, I would have eaten here again. Ordered the Indian Thali and every dish was very flavourful and very filling.

Fantastic pure vegetarian restaurant run by a lovely family. We received a warm welcome from mother and daughter and an interesting visit to their temple upstairs. They prepare delicious Indian thalis, everything made fresh! The mango lassi and masala tea were heavenly too. Amazing value for the price.

Doesn't look like much from the outside, but Kumari is absolutely adorable, caring and very smiley. The food is very good and not expensive at all. We eat local in the Sri Lankan way... so with our fingers! I loved the experience, and the dinner! I highly recommend it!

Very tasty and filling thali and masala tea. Not super busy. A very nice lady greets you at the entrance and tells you everything about the food they serve. It has been one of the best foods I've had in Sri Lanka.

Family business run by charismatic Nagalingam serving Indian food. I had a yummy thali and finished with a masala cuppa with coconut cake. She is lovely and enjoyed chatting with her. Come here for a family homemade indian food experience.

Very good small restaurant run by an old lady. We shred a vegan platter for 2 and all dishes were tasty, I would go back. Price is also fair too.

We ate here during our trip in Kandy. It was a delicious and filling vegetarian meal for a small price. The lady who hosted the place was super kind and brought cheerfulness to a rainy day. If we return to Kandy, we'll be back!

I ordered a not spicy option and it was incredibly spicy even for my husband who likes hot food. When I said about this the woman added a bit of milk into my dish that didn't help. She also offered another small meal instead, which was cold and tasteless but I ate it cause at that point I was too hungry. It was weird when the owner was sitting next to us watching us eat 😁 The advantage is that the place is really cheap and in the good location.

I had a Thali but be warned before you rush into it as during the course, they keep running round with some other delicious "gubbins" and a massive paratha which they make freshly which is so filling! The delightful old woman comes round and explains the food and was so nice. She then came round at the end with a little sweet cakey thing (I forgot what she called it) but it simply concluded a wonderful meal. Don't miss this place if you're a veggy!

A hidden gem off the main Street but worth trying to find it as the food is absolutely amazing. It's run by the sweetest lady- just make sure you get there before 8:30pm. Places are closing early at the moment!

Wonderful little family run shop (5th gen immigrants from Tamil Nadu), serving delicious vegetarian Indian food. The Thali was absolutely delicious and a massive portion. Would come again when back in Kandy!

  • 5/5 Tristan S. 4 years ago on Google
AMAZING family-run restaurant; it was empty when my wife and I entered but that was a blessing in disguise as their food was unbelievably delicious and they were all so kind as to talk to us during dinner. This is one of the FEW times when a huge crowd of tourists waiting at the door doesn’t mean it will be delicious. They don’t rush out the food so they can take care in making sure it tastes just right and I never leave reviews. Most def a great place near the lake.

Delicious food, pleasant service from the lovely lady working there, generous portions and a bargain price! Coconut cake to finish was particularly good. I shared a special Thali with my friend and it was 1000 rupee / £2.21 per person. You have to try this place if you’re in Kandy!

We had a delicious and rich in flavor Thali for 2 here for a very reasonable price. The owner is kind and caring. She took the time to explain each dish and showed us some of the ingredients she sources everyday from the market. A homely and wonderful meal. Highly recommend.

Family operation, mom is the greeter and server, daughter is the chef. Excellent Indian Thali reminiscent of India itself. Modest surroundings more than compensated by the warm and welcoming hostess. Very economical and delicious Highly recommend when in Kandy.

Highly recommend this place - mama is an excellent host, the thali is delicious with so many curries, beetroot, jackfruit and chickpea based options as well as daal, samosa, roti and extra breads. Delicious and really a great price just 2000LKR for 2 people. A little music would add to the atmosphere. The coconut cake was so delicious and also vegan. Thankyou mama. We left feeling like family- I will be back if I am in kandy again.
