Very peaceful and sacred place. The temple is carved from a part of rock mountain with 3 steps entering to the shrine room (Reclining Buddha). The wall painting is also very beautiful with hi light in many parts.

It is a historical Buddhist temple situated in the outskirts of Kandy Town. Generally, you will not find a very large crowd unlike other historic temples in Kandy. Has colourful paintings & frescoes which dates back to ancient times. It is a very calm place, which is highly suitable for meditation.

An ancient Buddhist cave temple with lots of wall & ceiling paintings. A nice & quiet place to study artworks from the Kandyan era. There are huge wooden & brass door locks with amazing carvings and paintings on them. There's only one cave with a huge sleeping Buddha statue.

Excellent cave paintings of the Buddha’s enlightenment. Even clearer than what you see in the Dambulla caves. A must when visiting Kandy!

This temple is most famous for its paintings. When you enter to the 3rd chamber youll see a peculiar peeled off fragment of painting from the buddha statue side its on right hand side to the beginning of the wall from the door this painting was there in the whole wall but archeologists found some other painting beneath it so they peeled off the covered layer slowly so what now present is the paintings of solosmasthàna , iathaka sotries , huge painting of màra paràjaya and buddha's life. When it comes to 2nd chamber paintings they are so uniquely drawn making Degaldoruwa temple the most spectacular and fine work of art. These paintings contain the movement drawn in a skilled manner the best example is the painting in Wessanthara jathaka athàva( elephant) Dandèèma depiction . As to the Degaldoruwa sannasa it says that there was a large painting of sùvisi vivarana but unfortunately we won't be able to see it as it have been completely faded or destroyed, but in the 2nd camber if you watch carefully at the wall situated in the right hand corner you will able to see a small fragment of flower pattern which is immensely faded which proves that there are more paintings than that we see now on the present .

Arts and the structural engineering is amazing though it's an old temple. It's possible to see Kandian painting in the caves. There are couple of friendly dogs who is in the temple. Don't forget to give them a biscuit if you are visiting this place. If the caves are closed, you can ask the monks to open them up and they will give you a really good description about the paintings as well.

Beautiful cave temple, peaceful and magic place, very old wall drawings, ancient lying Buddha statue. We went there and it was closed but the monks opened the cave temple for us, we were the only ones to visit the temple. There is no entrance fee, a voluntary donation can be done, the monks are very happy if you give a donation.

Degaldoruwa cave temple was no less wonderful than the Dambulla Cave Temple because, despite having less relics, it did have its own reclining Buddha and no crowds. We were greeted and shown around by simply the jolliest monk we’ve ever met. Full of beaming smiles and pride in the cave temple he was showing us he turned our visit into a special and rewarding experience.

Another one of old historical Buddhist Temple in near Kandy Town. There is a very old Buddha's statue. Popular place in Kandy area. School children should read the history and get the information about these kind of Buddhist Temples. Each Buddhist Temple has a reason (most if the people doesn't know bcs it's secret) why they build it. Beautiful temple. The Buddhist monks are really very helpful and they will share the information about this. Good place. 👍

Degaldoruwa Raja Maha Vihara (Sinhala: දෙගල්දෝරුව රජමහා විහාරය) is an ancient Buddhist rock temple, situated in Amunugama, Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is famous for its Kandyan Era Frescoes. The cave itself was said to have been excavated out of a rock which rises to a height of approximately 12.3 m (40 ft),and shelters the shrine room and entrance chamber. Details relating to the construction of the temple and the royal land grant are contained on the Degaldoruwa Tamba Sannasa (Copper Plate). Construction of the temple was commenced in 1771 during the reign of King Kirti Sri Rajasinha [1747-1782 AD]by his younger brother, Rajadhi Rajasinha and completed by Rajadhi Rajasinha after he ascended to the throne. Following the temples completion Rajadhi Rajasinghe placed the Temple in the custody of a learned monk, Moratota Dhammakkanda Maha Nayaka Thera [1734-1811], who was also Rajadhi Rajasingha's teacher and chief advisor
