Such a an incredible place to see the scenic view of Kandy. You can go there with Tuk Tuk. Good to go in the evening. Just like other places in Sri Lanka, you can't wear short, if you do, you can cover with a rope they give you. And you do need to pay a little for entering there. Behind the Buddha, there's stair to go up there to see the view of Kandy city from above.

Beautiful temple with a 360 Aerial view of Kandy. The floor is very hot during afternoon, so better be there during sunset or mornings. Good place to peacefully spend your time.

Bahirawakanda means Gnome mountain which is located in Kandy . The temple on the hill of Bahirawakanda called Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya mostly popular among the tourists for its giant buddha statue. Statue shows lord Buddha seated in the Nirvana pose which is the position associated with his first enlightenment. It is one of the tallest statue of lord Buddha in srilanka about more than 25 metres. The villagers who lived in surroundings area once believed the hill was home for an evil gnome the devoured unsuspecting humans. In the temple behind the statue of Lord Buddha a flight of stairs best view of temples surrounding which is best in night when the city of Kandy lit up with thousands of lights which explored an amazing beauty of Kandy city.

Bahiravokanda vihara Buddha statue lies within few meters from Peradeniya is a huge concrete religlous monument. It is one of the numerous things to be toured and experienced in Kandy. It will take about 20 minutes to reach the statue from the Police station of Peradeniya. Travelers enjoy the Buddha statue which is 88 feet in height with the amusement created by the statute. Visitors may have to climb few stairs to this calm and peaceful spot arranged by the Buddhist monks of Sri lanka. Even though you can see the white colored Buddha statue made on the hill at a distance from the Peradeniya city. Certainly, it can be seen from almost anvwhere in Kandv city. A panoramic view of the Kandy city has appeared in the top. Indolent travelers can hire a tuk tuk or a taxi to get into the top. Perhaps it may be windy but surely it is not a steep climb. Simultaneously you may identify the Kandy lake, football stadium, and tea factory and dotted stone boulders through the outlook from the top. Frequently a better photo collection of the landscape can be taken. Bahiraviokanda vihara Buddha statue is one of the tallest and beautiful Buddha statues in Sri lanka. The hill where the statue was built called bahirava kanda, in Sinhalese it means the devil's hil. A stairway beside with the statue can be climbed for a greater height. In fact, it will be well worth to see the statue lit up at night. Some tourists believe that there isn't anything important. Rather than that, a trip to the bahiravakanda vihara Buddha statue will b a spectacular visit to Kandy's famous sites. Be sure to remove your caps and shoes or slippers before entering the premise. Devotees are expected to worship Buddha statue by offering flowers and lighting oil lamps. Henceforward the site is being developed to attract more tourists.

A good place to visit when you're in kandy. Visit in the evening for a mesmerizing feel. The place has a great view. There's a souvenir shop in there where you can shop from. The temple gives you a calming feel and just unwind after a busy day. There's an entry fee for tourists. I think it was 300 LKR.

Fantastic place, very serene and quite. More authentic then most other Buddha’s. Highly recommended to visit via a Tuktuk city tour. Small entry fee of 300rs only and not very strict regarding clothes.

Access road is newly carpeted and easy access you can get a panoramic view of Kandy City from the temple. Avoid morning traffic and afternoon school traffic if you are visiting. Temple is pretty clean and they are maintaining a separate wash room for Foreigners.

The Bahirawakanda Temple is quite famous among the locals as well as foreign visitors. It's one of the famous Buddhist Religious places situated in an elevated area in Kandy. One might prefer taking a tuk tuk or either climb all the way if he's up for some good exercise. The environment is calm and soothing which makes it a perfect location for a Buddhist Temple. There's a place onto the right side of the entrance where you can purchase the offerings for worship and to leave your footwear. It's advisable to dress in white or light colours and clothing that covers the body. The view is quite enchanting and you can climb up the stairs behind the statue which gives wider view of the city and the surrounding area. It's a must visit place if you're ever planning to drop by in Kandy.

At first it looks like it's just a massive Buddha statue, but once you are inside, there is a lot to explore. It wasn't too crowded and the place is really well maintained. There's also a great view if you take the time to climb the various staircases throughout the grounds. Definitely go if you are in Kandy.

Devotees are allowed inside the budhha statue & steps are available to go to the top. Dress code is important, no shorts & trousers are allowed inside the temple. Such a big statue, don't forget to miss the wonderful view at the top.

The Buddha statue offers a picturesque view all around in Kandy. When you reach the top, this magnificent tall statue is just breathtaking and you get a panoramic view in which you can glance the entire city. Beautiful and stunning pictures can be clicked and the entire view from the top is just mesmerizing.

A bit underwhelming. Feels more like a tourist attraction than a working temple. Impressive enough Buddha statue, nice views but many more spectacular views around Sri Lanka. Like most tourist sites in Sri Lanka there is a two tiered pricing system. 300 rupees entry fee for non Sri Lankans but free to Sri Lankans regardless of how rich you might be! Constantly pestered for more donations while walking around which somewhat spoils the experience

The statue of the Buddha is visible from the entire city of Kandy, once you reach the top the view of Kndy city and the lake is visible. Very picturesque and beautiful. No wait time, however you might have to wait a little to take the best picture with the Buddha statue from the center position as the best angle is in the center which is also a walkway for entry and exit. Please note there is a nominal entry fee for the foreigners. And the visit is worth it.

Beautiful buddhist temple overlooking the city of Kandy. Serene and welcoming place open to locals and foreigners who wish to come worship and/or enjoy the beauty of the temple and its panoramic city view. Leave your shoes at the entrance or leave them with the caretaker at the entrance, but please be sure to donate in support of their services and kindness. Pants or long dress required. SHOULDERS AND LEGS MUST BE COVERED. Take your hats off as you enter. There will be Monks enforcing this, but please be respectful of their traditions and beliefs. Pay at the tourist office at the entrance going up the stairs. For 250 LKR per person you get access to the temple and the Buddha’s statue. Monks are very friendly and welcoming. Do not take selfies with the Buddha, as turning your back is disrespectful. Highly recommended at dusk or dawn. Can go up the stairs and climb the Buddha, but the top is closed off during certain times/days, so maybe ask at the entrance if that’s a dealbreaker for you. Parking can be challenging. Construction on the road out front in progress as of December 2021. A tuk tuk up for 250+ LKR is also fine, but if you have enough sunlight you can enjoy the hike up if you’re into that. Bring comfortable inexpensive shoes you don’t mind taking off, and socks if you don’t like going barefoot. Be careful going down at night, mostly because of vehicles going down fast and the streets lacking illumination.

You feel very far from the city chaos once you start to climb the hills. It’s very easy to walk from the city center! And when you get there you feel like you are in a another world. I went there around 5.30 and there was not many people and I even had to chance to meditate at the peak view ! Here some pictures from different sides..

In Kandy, Sri Lanka, this temple is home to the largest sitting Buddha statue. You must take off your sandals before entering the temple, and women must cover their knees and elbows. When we went, there was a 300 LKR entrance fee. On top of the mountain, where the temple is located, there is a lovely view and a serene atmosphere.

At the Bahirawakanda Temple in Kandy, the statue depicts Lord Buddha in the Nirvana pose, symbolizing his first Enlightenment. Towering over 25 meters, a staircase permits visitors to ascend to the giant Buddha's neck, offering a stunning nighttime view of the temple's picturesque surroundings.

According one legend there was a powerful Bahirawa Devalaya at the top of the Bahirawa Kanda where hundreds of beautiful girls had been sacrificed to Bahirawa Deviyo. These Devalayas and Kovils flourished during the days of Nayakkar Kings. It is known for the Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya, construction of which commenced in 1972, under the direction of Ven. Ampitiye Dammarama Thero.

I visited Sri Maha Bodhi Maha Viharaya during my trip to Kandy and I was amazed by the giant Buddha statue that overlooks the city. The statue is 26.83 meters high and depicts Buddha in the meditation pose. It is one of the tallest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka and a symbol of peace and harmony. The temple is located on a hill called Bahirawakanda, which means "Gnome Mountain". According to legend, the hill was once inhabited by an evil gnome that ate humans, but the villagers appeased it by making sacrifices. Thankfully, those days are long gone and now the hill is a serene and sacred place. The temple is only 2 kilometers from the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which is another must-see attraction in Kandy. I removed my shoes and hat and entered the temple premises. The statue was impressive from every angle and I felt a sense of awe and reverence. I climbed up the stairs behind the statue and enjoyed the panoramic view of Kandy city. It was especially beautiful at night, when the city lights twinkled like stars. I highly recommend visiting Sri Maha Bodhi Maha Viharaya if you are in Kandy. It is a spiritual and cultural experience that you will not forget.

Very nice location. You can climb behind the buddha statue all the way to ears height 😍. You can also enter inside the buddha around waist height, there is another shrine there and we could sit and meditate there for some time. I was a bit surprised there is a fee to enter as i consider this a religious location… but the fee was minimal, i would have honestly given more if there had only been a donation box instead of a ticket counter 🤣

The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue is located on a hill near the Temple of the Tooth Relic, about 2 kilometers away. The hill offers panoramic views of Kandy city, as well as the adjacent mountain range. Climbing up the hill for stunning views of Kandy city is best done at night, when the entire city is illuminated.

This place showcases a breathtaking view of the entire Kandy town. The 88ft high statue of Buddha is something one should not miss while in Kandy. The white statue can be seen from any part of the Peradeniya city as it is strategically located on top of the Bahirava Kanda (devil’s) hill. You can either climb the steps to reach the viewpoint or else hire a tuk-tuk to do so. The beauty of the statue doubles during the night when it is lit by lamps. Best hour to visit this place is early morning or after sunset. This place should be definitely there on your list of places to visit in Sri Lanka. Highlights: Panoramic view of the city down, including a view of the lake, tea factory, and football stadium; gallery that has artefacts based on the life of Buddha; a souvenir shop which has lovely goodies at a much friendlier price Location: Peradeniya, Kandy. Price: Approximate price starts from 200 LKR. Timings: Open 24 hours a day.

This Buddha temple is definitely one of my fav visits in Kandy. The Bodhi tree was really gigantic as tall as the Buddha statue. You could climb up the Buddha statue and experience tranquillity and beautiful scenery of the city. I was very attracted to the bodhi tree and spent my time there. The entrance fee is 300 rupees, so it's very affordable.

This is a massive White Buddha Statue located on top of the hill at Kandy. We had been visiting this place around 4 - 5 times. This Spot gives you the panoramic view from the viewing platforms of the city, some interesting wall painting depicting Buddha’s life and the giant white Buddha statue!!! There's no entrance fee charged for locals, but may be for tourists. You can reach the top of the statue, through stairs supported by the back of the statue. superb spot, to enjoy and experience the peaceful feeling and the scenic view.

The Bahirawakanda Buddha statue is housed at the Sri Maha Bodhi Temple, which is located on top of Bahirawakanda Mountain. This exquisitely carved white statue, which depicts the Supreme Buddha seated in Nirvana, may be found all around Kandy before it. With a height of 88 feet, it is Sri Lanka's biggest Buddha statue. Kandy can be described as a city that has won the respect of local and foreign tourists as well as Buddhists from all over the world. Most visitors to Kandy only visit the Temple of the Tooth, the Kandy Lake Circle, and the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens, but miss other tourist attractions in Kandy. One of the areas they lack is the Bahirawa Kanda Viharaya. The Buddha statue can be seen by any visitor visiting Kandy at the Bahirawa Kanda Temple, which is situated above the capital. You may take a bus or train from Colombo to Kandy, but the train is the most picturesque option. Bahirawa Kanda Viharaya is 650 feet high and is situated 2 km from Kandy City. Bahirawa Kanda is a wonderful place for visitors to see the natural wonders of the region, and from there you can see the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, as well as the city of Kandy and the surrounding mountain ranges. Ven. Ampitiye Dharmarama Thero began work on the temple and the massive Buddha statue in 1973, and it was finished and opened to the public in January 1993

Bhairava Kanda is a beautiful peak facing the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic . The huge Buddha statue at the top of the hill offers a beautiful view of the city itself. The whole city looks great from the top of the hill. It is advisable to choose the morning or evening time to go to the temple. It may be difficult to park on Poya days as there is no large parking lot.

A peak location with a 360 view of the hill capital. A nice and soothing buddhist temple with a massive samadhi buddha statue. Apparently the 2nd or 3rd highest in the country .

The huge statue of Buddha make us feel "Buddhalambana preethiya". The monks are very helpful too.

👍👍 Mesmerizing view. Must visit during evening. No tickets. A good place to stop at and see the amazing view of Kandy city. We stopped here on our way to the famous Sri Maha bodhi temple. The place wasn't too crowded and there are some local vendors around.
