Very popular place in Ella, so be prepared you will have to wait in a long line before you get a table but the food is really good. We had veggie samosas and vegetables in tempura for starter, then vegetable curry and banana and Nutella roti for desert. Everything was really delicious, fresh and full of taste. The owner is super nice and even if very busy, you will get as much attention as you need. I totally recommend it!

We just had the absolute best meal of our whole Sri Lanka vacation here! Don’t get scared off by the location, the food will beat any fancy place by far! Fantastic value for money and incredibly tasty local dishes. Don’t miss this place.

Cute little place near the tunnel in Ella. Run by a local who cooks amazing local food. The owner was very friendly and smiley. It’s a very popular place by the seems of it. People were queueing up for a while to get a table so recommend going early. Better than the expensive high street Ella restaurants!

Most Delicious Food we ate in Sri Lanka! One of the rare spots in Ella to have typical singhal food. Personal is always friendly and smiling. Positive vibes only!

Great food, great service. We did the kitchen lesson where we prepared a rice and curry for +2hours. It was fantastic! Highly recommended! One cons tho: during the lesson, the chef told us he would send us the recipe...but he didn't :( edit: we received the recipe!

I loved this cooking class SO MUCH ! Dial the owner and chef was so nice and funny! The food was delicious. I usually at not into too touristy things so I did this very spontaneously and had the best night! Worth every Roupie!! And we only did veggie because we requested. Don’t know if he does it with meat too.

Some of the best food I had during my visit to Sri Lanka. It truly lives up to the expectation for such a high rated place. The hosts are really friendly and make fresh tasty food. Prices are reasonable too.

We went here twice as this was the best curry we had on our trip. What's outstanding: you can choose your different curries instead of getting a pre-selected portion. This gives a lot of variety. Cutest King coconut in the shape of a mouse.

One of the best food experiences we’ve had. Authentic Sri Lankan dishes and they simply deserve nothing less than 5 stars for everything. Careful on spices as it is not for faint hearted. Their dishes along with their juices and shakes is amazing too …my 10 yr old said that it is the best vanilla shake he’s ever had. Worth a visit with cheap hearty and quality food, service and atmosphere. Do expect some wait time during busy seasons.

Hands down the best curry we've had so far, and we've tried quite a few. Totally worth waiting in the queue for a couple of minutes. Opt for the 4-curries option and choose your favorites (don't skip the mango one!). The staff is incredibly attentive. A must-visit when you're in Ella.

The stuff is nice but we specifically asked them for food no spicy and it was spicy, I couldn't finish it and finally I went to other restaurant but as the food came also super late (in Matey Hut) then I had the lunch also late for the European standards. It would be better to say that all the dishes offered are spicy as are already cooked or that you are not able to cook them without it instead of not saying anything and charge the guests for something that they will not be able to eat. In favour, I would say that the drinks were cold, something difficult to find in the area. If you don't like spicy (scharf/picante) then definitely is not your place. I think that this place is overrated and there are better options.

Super fresh local food. Great to have the option to select which of the 4 curries you want with your rice. Although very heavy on the use of coconut milk, the food was delicious. Very friendly / courteous service.

Best restaurant in Ella! The parata was amazing, along with the rest of the local food. People were also extremely nice and found us a table to sit even though the place is quite small. Highly recommended!

Don't hesitate, definitely have a meal here. Excellent, well priced menu. Sri Lankan curry 5 star & fried rice chicken veg egg - super tasty and large. Also try the chocolate banana roti, big enough for 2... Staff are really really nice. Thanks 🇳🇿🇬🇧

Had a delicious lunch of Rice and Curry here today. Super friendly staff, was invited to see the lovely ladies cooking in the kitchen. One of the yummiest plates of food I’ve had in Sri Lanka :-)

A great option for authentic local food in Ella. The tray of 5 curries is definitely the pick. Aubergine curry was our favourite. We added the chicken curry too, which was also fantastic. Would highly recommend. The place may not look like much from the outside but there’s a good view down the street and the food makes it all worth it.

DONT MISS!! The most AMAZING cooking class where we made curries and even my older mother who doesn’t love cooking RAVED about not only the seamless experience, but most importantly how phenomenal the food we made was!! If you’re able to do the cooking class, call ahead and book for sure, it was one of our favorite Sri Lanka experiences ever. Don’t hesitate or think twice, book it! If you can’t make a cooking class, then DEFINITELY don’t miss the restaurant. The curries are out of this world. Can’t recommend enough, our chef and host was incredibly personable and took time to re explain things as needed. He was a joy to have hosting the class. By far an incredibly special highlight of our trip we wont forgot and will also be back every time we visit Ella!

Best place we ate in our Sri Lankan trip. We liked so much we went both the days we stayed in Ella. We loved the way the presented the food, innovative in contrast to many more traditional places. Competitive prices and very kind staff. Suggested the banana flower salad, we ate it anywhere else in Sri Lanka.

Excellent food and such friendly staff, who are smiling a lot and checking in. I ordered the chicken curry and my partner chose 4 vegetable curries (there are about 7-10 different ones to choose from, according to what they have at that time). We loved everything. The portions are big for the cheap price. I also ordered a milk tea which was also large for the low price! We’ll be back for dinner tonight!

Total heavenly food! One of the best meals we’ve had in Sri Lanka. We wolfed it down! And the banana fritters were scrumptious too. The only downfall was the seating - i found it uncomfortable not being able to tuck my legs under a table! I would 100% return

Great small restaurant near the road. We had to wait a bit but they gave us chairs. The food was simply delicious with awesome spices and perfectly cooked chicken. We had the deviled chicken and stir fry with rice. The staff was friendly and food was awesome.

Maybe I was unlucky , the portions were large, but the food was not so good. I ordered black pepper chicken with rice, and it was over salted. And the sauce was not homemade, the chicken was so-so(( Only the coconut rotti with honey was really tasty.

There are just a few tables at Matey Hut so come early to avoid disappointment. And missing out would definitely be disappointing. The vegetable curries with rice and popadum is not to be missed. It offered a great selection of flavours for a very good price. We had never eaten mango curry before this and are total converts now! It’s cash only so make sure to have money with you.

The BEST food I’ve had in Sri Lanka. I ordered the rice and four curries and every single dish was absolutely sensational. The food came out very quick and the staff were so sweet. 10/10 dining experience, can not recommend this place enough!

Incredibly tasty Sri Lankan food, and much more affordable that most places in Ella centre. I had the four vegetable curries and chose; potato, dhal, pumpkin and banana blossom. I particularly loved the pumpkin and potato curries. Service was also super quick!

Delicious! Great prices and friendly staff. We had the 4 vegetarian curries and all were excellent, bonus points for the coconut mouse 🐁 🥥 definitely visit in Ella

One of the best meals we had in Sri Lanka. The place is pretty small, but the home made food is absolutely amazing. Mango juice, kottu and curry were so good, and the personnel very kind and relaxed. It's also a bit hidden from the buzz of the small city of Ella, which is also a good thing. Overall, highly recommend.

We went to their cooking class and absolutely loved it! It was very well organized and we cooked so many different things. From all kinds of different vegetable curries (pumpkin, mango, bean, dhal, banana,…), made our own rotti, coconut sambal and fried banana for dessert. We also learned a lot about Sri Lankan cuisine and spices. The food in the end was absolutely delicious. Can only recommend this class. We did the one starting at 4pm which meant eating at 6.30pm which was a good time for us. Thanks for the great experience!

Absolutely delicious meal. 10/10. I’ve been in Sri Lanka over two weeks and this has by far been my favourite meal. I had the rice with 4 vegetable curries and they were all delicious. Very reasonably priced too!

  • 5/5 Lucy A. 4 months ago on Google
Definitely the tastiest curries that I had on my two week trip. I got the four veg curry and rice combo - okra, aubergine, dhal and Sambal. All the dishes had distinct flavours and were very fresh. We had the samosas too and they were amazingly crisp and light. Super cheap too! It gets very busy, seating is quite tight.

I can highly recommend this place. I have been here so often and loved it each time. You can choose different currys, the juices are so so tasty and the stuff is really lovely. My favorite place to eat in Ella!

  • 3/5 Julian W. 9 months ago on Google
It was tasteful, but I had better Currys with rice before. Kottu was tasty. We waited half an hour and one drink was late. Recommend only partly.

Great food in Ella, much much better quality than many other places on the Main Street and so tasty! For the good price you get very big portion! The staff is also kind and friendly. Btw they make their own Tabasco souse and it is incredibly tasty!
