Beautiful, colourful Hindu worshipping building. It costs a small amount to get in and a little bit more to the man who guards your shoes for you (sure, you can not pay him but it's not really an issue). Hindu temples never cease to impress me. They always have such colour and great design. Top that off with some really cool carvings of various gods of all forms and you can't go wrong.

Impressive Hindu Temple located right off the Kandy road, 350 rupees to go inside and walk around the outside. All of the gods on the exterior are most impressive. There were several smaller alters inside, including one in the center that prohibits tourists from entering. You have to take your shoes off to enter and I made the mistake of stepping in a shallow pan full of water ment for cleaning your feet while exiting the side of the temple, so had wet socks. Beautiful figures, must be impressive when it's full of people.

Very famous and an ancient temple of Lord Amman in Matale. They used to keep their annual festival during the month of Feb/Mar on Maasi magam. During their festival temple will be over occupied with devotees, especially on chariot day. Very calm and peaceful temple. Photos were take during 2019 Chariot.

The Kovil has open hours where you are allowed to walk in. Therefore, recommend going on those sepacified times as you are not allowed to walk in to the premises when closed. No vehicle parking and very difficult to find a parking slot. Know as one of the most secred Kovils in the area. You have to remove the slippers at the entrance before entering to the kovil.

Sri Muthumariamman Temple, Matale is dedicated to the goddess of rain and fertility known as "Mariammaan" or simply "Amman". There are many popular temples dedicated to this goddess throughout India and South Asia. This temple in Matale is believed to have been built around the 1800s and partially destroyed during the 1983 riots, to be rebuilt later by well-wishers in the community. Today it is visited by Hindus as well as Buddhists and Muslims etc. and many tourists. It has a very tall and colourful "Gopuram". The Temple festival is very famous and many devotees come from around the island to attend it. There are very beautifully decorated chariots owned by the temple which tour the town during the festival. Parking available inside the premises. You can pay at the entrance and buy a ticket to have a Pooja done in your name. There are shrines for almost all the Hindu gods inside the premises.

500LKR entry, aging exterior. Having this place as recommended in many guides is a bit rubbish, we have nothing against this temple but there are many others in Sri Lanka, sometimes much smaller but with more charm and spirituality.

The main religious festivals including the chariot festival at the temple are celebrated during February or March on an annual basis. The temple has five ornate chariots, which are used to convey statues of Hindu deities around the city on 'Ther' or 'Vettai Thiruvizha', the chariot ceremony day, which is held the day before 'Medin Poya' (the Poya day in March). Ganesha, Shiva, Mahadevi, Murugan and Chandeshvara Nayanar are the five prominent statues of Hindu deities which are carried by devotees in the chariot festival.

They charge you 250 rupees at the entrance for the ticket but don't tell you that you can't go inside...for that you have to pay 500 rupees. Like everything else in Sri Lanka most attractions are designed to rip off tourists...you just have to know this from beginning of your trip and make peace with it to have a good experience in this beautiful country.

The land was originally part of a paddy field and was gifted by the owner in 1852.[5] The current temple was built in 1874, funded by the Nattukkottai Chettiar.[6] This temple is used by both Hindus and Buddhists. The temple was originally a small statue under a tree prayed to by the Hindu people but has been developed by the people in Matale.[7] The first Kumbhabhishekham of the temple was held in 1960. The temple was severely damaged during the anti-Tamil riots in July 1983 but was subsequently restored. One of the visually dominant features of this temple is its 32.9 m (108 ft) high Gopuram ('Raja Koburum'), a large decorated tower located above the main northern gateway ('Vadakku Vaayil') to the temple.[5] The Raja Koburum is one of the largest Gopurams in Sri Lanka. The 1008 statues of Hindu deities are the work of South Indian sculptor, Nagalingam and his son Ramanathan, with the help of about 100 designers, painters and architects from Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. The Raja Koburum was completed in 2007 at the cost of approximately Rs 150M.

Spectacular Hindu Temple construction and seemingly well preserved. A real feat of architecture! You can walk all around it quite freely it seems. The setting is unusual as it is near the main road and has a school at the rear.

Colourful but expensive! I never had to pay entry in a Hindutemple, 500 is a lot! I feel cheated. I was sad after payment that I was not allowed to enter the main shrine. What sense makes a Temple, if you can not have darshan from the deity? I recommend to the temple to give at least some guiding for the entry fee.

In March 2017, I visited Matale town and a wonderful raja gopuram which is entrance tower to Sri Muthumariamman Temple. 1874 AD. The raja gopuram has 108 ft height. You will see 1008 sculptures depicting Hindu deities. Sri Muthumariamman Temple is dedicated to Mariamman, South Indian Hindu goodness of rain and fertility. I was impressed due to the art and beauty of the architectural Sri Muthumariamman Temple image. The temple presents a Davidic style. Hindus and Buddhists community at the present use the temple. Worth to visit.
