Wasgamuwa National Park (Wasgomuwa) spanning over 36,900 hectares is bordered by River Mahaweli Ganga and River Amban Ganga in east and west. The altitude varies from over 500m at the Sudu kanda hill to just 76m along the Mahaweli Ganga. The combination of a number of small reservoirs and Sudu kanda mountain range affords fine trekking opportunities for keen hikers. Tropical dry mixed evergreen forest predominates, characterized by tall trees: Weera (Drypetes sepiaria), Palu (Manikkara hexandra), Wa (Cassia roxburghii) Ehala (C. Fistula), Buruta (Satin), Chloroxylon Swietenia, Velang (Pterospermum canescens), the endemic Galsiyambala (Dialium ovoideum), Milla (Vitaex Pinanata) and Kaluwara (ebony) (Diospyros Ebenum). Wasgamuwa National Park’s (Wasgomuwa) climatic conditions are that of the dry zone. Rain fall is mainly with the northeast monsoon (Maha) in October-February. Inter-monsoon rains occur in March-May. Annual rainfall increases from about 1,750 mm in the north to 2,250 mm in the south. Mean annual temperature is around 27 centigrade. The center of the attraction is herds of elephants up to 150. The best time to enjoy the sight of large herds is during November to May. In the rest of the year the elephants tend to migrate to nearby Minneriya and Kaudulla national Parks. Other wildlife includes Purple faced langur monkeys, wild boar, sambar and spotted deer, buffalo and rarely sighted leopards and sloth bears.Among the reptiles are water monitor, mugger crocodile, estuarine crocodile and python (Python Molurus). Of the 143 species of birds reported at Wasgamuwa National Park (Wasgomuwa) are endemic Red-faced malkoha and Ceylon jungle fowl are common sight in the park. Among the bird populations are Sri Lanka Trogon, racquet tailed drongo, endemic yellow fronted barbet, endemic Sri Lanka spurfowl, white necked stork and lesser adjutant stork. Remains of a number of small rainwater reservoirs and ruins of temples reveal that the region of Wasgamuwa National Park (Wasgomuwa), was once home to prosperous villages. The ruins estimated to be about 1800 years old features a reclining Buddha statue at Buduruwayaya. Ruins of a palace with stone pillars are found in an island in a canal known as Kalinga Yoda Ela built by King Parakrambahu the great in the twelfth century.

One of the best national parks in Sri Lanka to spot wild elephants. Ideal to visit in evenings when elephants are more active. You can park the vehicles at entrance and get a safari Jeep from there. Jeep cost you 3500 rupees in addition to the entrance fees which costed us around 1000 rupees for 5 people. During the safari they stop at the banks of mahaweli river and you could spend some quality time there as well. We had a very successful safari here and spotted many elephants.

You have to spend a night inside the park to get the best out of it. Access roads are newly constructed well and well maintained. Everything is fine with the place

Wasgamuwa national park is the one of the best national parks in Sri Lanka. This park is unique due to it's location. It's in Matale and Pollonnaruwa districts; it only represents climate from dry-zone dry to evergreen forests. You can watch Sri Lankan Elephants, leopards, wild birds and many wild animals here. This forest consists of primary, secondary, riverine forests and grasslands in Sri Lanka.

Wasgomuwa Park is among few other parks where you can see variety of wildlife animals. Rich in diversity and worth seeing year around, though dry during July to October in general. Though Wasgomuwa believed to be derived after "Sloth bears" elephants seems to be the best seen animals here. They are comparatively aggressive too. Roads are well maintained and adviced only by 4x4 during rainyseasons. Open roof are not allowed. Road density is very low yet you get to see many animals. They're are few viewpoints available for you to get off the vehicle. There are 3 wildlife bungalows and few camping sites inside the park, where you need prior booking with the department of wildlife. Park is accessible via Handungamuwa or Kirioya entrances.

We were extremely Lucky, we saw more than 70 elephant's, we hired kandula safari and the driver was chaminda. First two hours we saw only 3 elephants but the next two hours was unforgettable memory. River mahaweli running at the edge of the park, if you wish you can take a very private bath too.

Great place to visit for wild life. You can book a circuit bungalow in side the park through online or the wild life. It won't cost that much. You can bring the ingredients and a cook is there to prepare food. You should go to site seeing in the afternoon. Most importantly if you staying in a bungalow inside the park, you should get into the park before 6pm. Because they close the park at 6.00 and they are so strict about that.

(Translated by Google) I like it! The organizers of my safari knew all the intricacies of their business, so they arrived at 5:30 and we were already on the path paying for the entry, where, as I understand it, the only family of elephants had already completed their morning procedures and was about to leave (the organizers knew that this moment was short and they knew how to fit it) as with all the other animals ... Seeing a couple of hours later a couple of dozen jeeps, some of which were with children, it was a little awkward to see their faces because I understood that they were just being transported by nature and they don’t have any animals there got up Retry - only birds! You can write questions to me if necessary!

I have mixed feelings and overall I think it's waste of time. The price for entering the park for a foreign person is 13k rupees (2 adults) plus hiring a car 10k rupees. The price is very high.. Sri Lankans do not understand that not everyone is rich like a British. Unfortunately, we didn't see any elephant.... We were already in the park before 6am. Besides, there were practically no animals. There were nice landscapes as a consolation.

Stretching over 36,900 hectare this national park is home to 23 mammal species and a number of birds and vegetation species. It is renowned for large families of elephants. Pleasant park with varied terrain, few annoying keep drivers because there are very few leopards or bear, and they're scared of the elephants; and they usually bring in guests at high noon, less traffic at ideal safari times. Park seems well administered, pleasant staff.

A great place to observe the nature closely and with serenity. Safari jeeps are available at the park entrance as well as well as en route to the park entrance. Prices are very reasonable. Elephants, deers, pocupines, wild boars, variety of aves are available in abundance. Try to visit the place during the rainy season (mostly during Nov to Feb). Safari jeep drivers are very helpful and lenient and provide a tour of around 2.5 hours. They have an excellent knowledge of the trails within the park as well as emergency situations such as elephant attacks. Try to complete the tour via a safari jeep (good for you as well as your vehicle)

We entered from the new entrance "Kiri Oya". You can travel up to around 120 km inside the park depending on the time of your arrival. You can visit the park from 6am to 6pm. We could observe elephants, herd of deer, herd of wild bore, rabbits and etc. There are number of birds as well. According to the wild life officials you may observe bears or leopard if you are lucky enough.

If you want to see huge herds of beautiful Asian wild Eliphants Wasgamuwa national park is one of best places in Sri Lanka. There are Leapords and Bears too. Deers , Peacocks, Jungle cats, Wild Buffalos are abandand seen. Wasgamuwa is also a bird watching pradise. So many types of migrant and indigenous birds can been seen in your arms length. There are Bungalows and designated camp sites with in the park. You can book those online via wildlife department website or wildlife department office at Bathramulla. Those bookings are in high demand so it's best to try online booking at the midnight of first day of the month.

The best place to Sri Lanka's cery own her of largest elephants. Comparing to elephants in other national parks, generally the male elephants in Wasgamuwa are larger in size. Although they look huge and threatening, they are completely harmless in my experience. This park never dissapointed me as I saw hers with large number of elephants, every time I visit this park. And the scenaries inside the park are breathtaking as you can see knuckles and other hill country mountain ranges in the background. You'll be able to see "Yudagana Pitiya" plain inside thia park which is to be belived where the "Elara - Dutugemunu" final battle took place.

Wasgamuwa is a national park situated in Matale & Polonnaruwa districts, bordering the Mahaweli River. Wasgamuwa is very popular for drastic and tallest wild elephants and birds. The best time to visit is the evening when elephants become more active and keep clam, less noisy since wild elephant may attack your jeep. Our visit to Wasgamuwa NP is superb. There are 3 wildlife bungalows inside the park and we stayed Wavulabe Wildlife Bungalow which is very nice place in the band of Mahaweli River. Bungalow keeper Sarath was very helpful person and his foods are tasty and superb. Our tracker is Dhanushka, he is very experience tracker. He saved us from unexpected elephant attack. But the Park Warden and the management is not that much great since we have to wait more than one hour to find a tracker and clear the entrance

Wonderful time I had today in Wasgamuwa National Park. It was a long time since I came here last when I was a high school student. We were able to spot herds of buffaloes, peacocks, wild boar, deer, crocodiles, and many species of birds. Several other mammals showed up in 5he distance but quickly vanished under the bushes. I had the closest encounter with wild elephants today. Our group just started coming back after observing a group of elephants and I spotted two other elephants approaching form the other side of the road. So we backed a little and was taking some pictures. Then there were more of them coming out of the forest, they had little ones too. The last was an old female elephant, it started coming to our vehicle slowly, and the rest followed. This old elephant and another came very close and one of the younger ones too. So close, we could even touch them but we didn't. The rest were behind them. They raised their trunk and sang for us (funny I said that). It was not threatening us, so I assume the sang for is 😆. One of them kicked the floor slowly and loosened the sand, took some in the trunk and threw at us couple of times. Then they peacefully and gracefully departed and joined the first group. I also took some pictures of the Mahaweli river which is the longest in Sri Lanka, and the sand banks. I took some closeup pictures of the clumps which was in the sand as well. After all these wonderful sights, I must say that I was able to observe plastic bottles, wrapping, and packaging around. I'm very much sure that the animals here didn't go shopping and left them in the area. This is clearly the humans. As usual I kindly request you to make sure you don't do the same. Let's keep the nature as nature and leave our waste somewhere else which is assigned for waste.
