The beautiful, 1000-year-old, rock-cut Buddha figures of Buduruwagala are the region's biggest attraction. The gigantic standing Buddha (at 15m, it is the tallest on the island) here still bears traces of its original stuccoed robe, and a long streak of orange suggests it was once brightly painted. It's surrounded by smaller carved figures. This remote site is located 9km south of Wellawaya, accessed by a scenic side road.Authorities generally date them to the 9th or 10th century. Buduruvagala does not have much historical records. Even its original name is unknown. It is thought to be a hermitage for monks. The sculptures of Buduruvagala also include many sculptures of bodhisatwa images including Mahayanatradition. *left side three bodhisatwa and thara dewagana status Buduruwagala  is an ancient buddhist temple. To the left of this white-painted figure is a female figure thought to be his consort, Tara. Local legend says the third figure represents Prince Sudhana. *grate buddha status The gigantic standing Buddha – at 16m, it is the tallest on the island – in the centre still bears traces of its original stuccoed robe, and a long streak of orange suggests it was once brightly painted *Right side status The crowned figure at the centre of the group is thought to be Maitreya, the future Buddha. To his left stands Vajrapani, who holds a vajra (an hourglass-shaped thunderbolt symbol) – an unusual example of the Tantric side of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. The figure to the left may be either Vishnu or Sahampath Brahma. Several of the figures hold up their right hands with two fingers bent down to the palm – a beckoning gesture. *Stone oil lamp On the same rock where the sculptures are carved, there is a carved shape of about 3 feet (0.91 m) wide and 4 feet (1.2 m) heigh. It is of the shape of a flame. The inside wall of this carved shape is always wet of an oil that smells very much like mustrd oil. This oil comes to the carved shape with no explainable source or reason. This plase is very nature. And shedy plase.and allso The road to this place has a beautiful environment. There is also a lovely view of the lakes, ponds and lakes. There are thousands of fish in lakeshore ponds. There are also numerous animals on both sides of the road along the road along the road. The name Buduruwagala means “the rock with the statue of Buddha”. Seven figured are carved in this rock with a massive 51 foot Buddha statue in the Abhaya Mudra gesture at the centre. The rock it self has shape of a kneeling elephant with its head own. It is believe that statues from the 6th centuary to late Anuradhapura period.

I'm a bit familiar with ancient places on Sri Lanka and this is a few leagues lower than staples like Sigiria or Anuradhapura. Still worth to visit if you have free slots on your journey. Sri Lanka natural beauty is amazing. So in my and my partner opinion the natural ponds on the way and the rice fields were a highlight of the trip. There is an abundance of wildlife in the Archeological Reserve. We saw peacocks, hornbills, herons and a heap of other small birds. We even saw first time in Sri Lanka a snake crossing the road.

A must visit place for all nature and history lovers. There are several Buddhist statues engraved on the rock (which also is the meaning of the name of place). The access road and surrounding is beautiful. The walk towards the rock is through a nice tree cover and a little forest. Be mindful of the monkeys. We met a local guide who was well aware of the history and is providing the historical background and the importance of the place to all visitors (specially the children). These creations belong to the Mahayana chapter of Buddhism and apparently were painted originally. Some statues seem unfinished. But well worth a visit due to the aritistic and ancient value as well as the natural beauty of the location.

A Nice and amazing historical place to visit. I don't now the story behind this amazing carved statue but the place itself is really beautiful. The place is quiet and you can also relax on a rock with a little pool of water. Out of respect, the woman have to cover their shoulders with a shawl if the shoulder is naked. Also if you want to visit the statue from a close distance you have to remove your shoes. Also out of respect. If you look very closely you see on one of the right statues has 6 fingers instead of 5. I am a tourist driver and I often take tourists to visit the place and guide the tourists

Definitely worth exploring if you are in Wellawaya, Ella, Monaragala area. It's a 15 minute ride from Wallawaya city. Road is in good condition. The site contains multiple statues carved on the rock. The main statue is of Buddha. To the left of the main statue, there are 3 figures believed to be of Avaloktheeshvara Bodhisattva, his wife and son. To the right of the Buddha statue , the remaining ones are believed to be of Maithri Bodhisattva and. Vajirapani Bodhisattva. The statues are believed to be carved in the 10th century.

Approximately 5 kilometers away on the Thanamalwila road from the Wellawaya. This rock has seven figures etched into it, and those statues date to the late Anuradhapura era. These carvings are in the Mahayana Buddhist style and are surrounded in a very pleasant environment.

Buduruwagala is an ancient temple of Sri Lanka. It’s consist of seven statues which are related to Mahayana school of thought. Middle is the gigantic Buddha statue which believes that would have been brightly painted back in the historical days. Right to the Buddha’s statue is identified as Bodhisatva statues and left of this white painted figure is a female figure.

Thousand year old Budhist sculpture. Gauthama Buddha accompanied by Aspirant Buddhas. This is more related to Mahayana Buddhism.

These stone carvings were made by King Walagama who ruled around 100BC. When South Indian armies invaded, he fled from Anuradhapura and came to Uwa Wellassa. While in hiding he made these. The rock itself has the shape of a kneeling elephant. There are signs of cavings into the rock above the statues, believed to be some kinda roof. When the roof was destroyed, with time the cement refinement of the statues were also destroyed. These structures have the Mahayana influence. The branch of Buddhism that believes anyone can become a buddha. Not only the ancient value, the garden is also kept very clean & tidy. There's also a lake on the way to this place. This entire area is so beautiful & peaceful. There was also a person who explained us about the history. Due to COVID situation, not many people visit now. If you see him please be kind enough to help him with money.
