Beautiful historical structure that is quite large! It is surrounded by the ocean and cute shops. It’s nice to simply walk around and take in the historic charm. It’s also a great place to enjoy eating at the many fantastic restaurants inside the fort! It’s free to enter the fort premises too!

Galle, known as Gimhathiththa in ancient times is the administrative capital of the southern province of Sri Lanka, situated 119km far from Colombo. The city was called as "the cape of birds" by ancient Greek and Roman geographers and Ptolomy has refered to the port as "Odoka". The climate of Galle is a tropical rain forest climate and the temperature does not vary much throughout the year. The average temperature is reported as 26 c°. The city is governed by the Galle municipal council and the population includes Sinhalese, Moor and many other ethnic groups. The city is well know for Galle fort catalogued as a world heritage site by UNESCO since it displays a combination of Portugese architectural structures and the traditional Sri Lankan architecture. This is the largest fortress which still remains in Asia built by Europeans. ▪𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿, ▪𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺, ▪𝗦𝘁. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆'𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗹, ▪𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗗𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹, ▪𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹, ▪𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲, ▪𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, ▪𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 are few other attractive landmarks of the city. The city is a historical city often explored by wanderers and visitors and the best part of the story is that you can wander around the city by foot and experience all of its exotic sites which have turned the city into a place of great architectural and archaeological value. Rumassala in Unawatuna is a breath- taking geographical site in Galle district and it safeguards the eastern side of the Galle harbour while being a protective barrier. As most of the coastal areas in Sri Lanka, the city was attacked by Tsunami in 2004 causing death to many residents as well as for thousands of local and foreign travellers. However, the beauty of the city was reformed once again after this tragic disaster. Galle, with a multi religious and multi ethnic population and a large amount of floating travellers, is an attractive city and a cultural heritage. This is a must-see site by any traveller since it contains many interesting views which fascinate the eye of any ardent observer!

It's one of the best preserved Portuguese (and Dutch) bastions, town in the South East of Asia. Takes about an hour to cover, more if one walks along the entire 3km stretch along the Ocean. There is a big gun base with the circular metal track. It's nice and breezy. The view is fabulous of the Galle bay on one side and the Rumassala Mt on the other side. One has to go there the city to reach the fort.

An ancient historical Fort that has since been converted to a tourist hot spot with a grand selection of hotels, restaurants and general eateries. An excellent place to visit and spend time in a family friendly educational and entertaining outing. They're working on some repairs and maintenance works at the moment but it hardly takes away from the magic of the whole experience.

Excellent place with a great view of the ocean. The place is clean and very well maintained. A good insight to the Portuguese architecture. Even the vendors aren't very pushy. Lots of options for food and stay.

Very strong and sturdy fort. The fort is very big. It stood well when the tsunami came in 2004. A lot of people walking around the fort taking pictures. All buildings painted white. It's overlooking the southern coastal area. Very nice view even though the sky is gray.

If you go to Galle don't miss this place. A place with great views. You can park your vehicle and go around there. You can also walk inside the fort. From the clock tower you can see Mahinda rajapaksa international cricket stadium. If you spend evening there don’t miss the sunset. You can able to see people taking bath at the bottom of the fort in some places. There is a light house. You can see the Rumassala(Japanese Peace Pagoda) from there.

Very nice place with lots of space to spend time with your loved ones. It has different types of locations and activities inside the fort. Light house, sea jumping, street food, street walking are some of them. They have more than enough parking slots available inside the fort. There are many hotels inside the fort where you can stay for affordable prices. If you are walking with kids inside fort near to the sea, better be cautious and keep an eye on them, as it's deep sea closer to the walking path.

This was the first time I visited the Galle fort after the pandemic started. Galle fort was somewhat different from what it was used to be. They have done some good renovations to make the pace more attractive to visitors. Paths, grass fields had been renovated. And they have placed some old times cannons on the fort(which weren't there some time ago) And they have added some descriptive boards to guide the visitors. It was a wonderful visit. During the day time it was not much crowded. If you haven't visited Galle fort, try it. Sea breeze and glorious sunset makes the whole travel worth it.

Galle Dutch Fort is a historical monument which is an icon of Galle. It is a great place to watch the sunset in the evening which is breathtaking. Currently restoration activities are taking place to preserve the old glory. You cam go around the rampart. The lighthouse, ramparts, clock tower are some features to see. Parking is available at the premises. At night you can enjoy the wonderful streets of the inner fort city.

If you go to Galle you should make a stop, stunning views over the sea. The fort is beautiful, the green, fort walls and the sea, make this place a place to visit and shoot! You can see animal life too. Inside the fort most of the buildings are still preserved, what makes the place mystic. One hospital that was converted in small shops, two churches. This place absolutely deserves a walk around. 😊🙏

Overrated, what was once an old fort now a tourist trap. there's nothing to do here really, it's just full of overpriced restaurants and different kinds of shops just to rip off tourists. if you're a solo female traveler you will be harassed, that's a guarantee.

A fascinating place. Spent many an evening wandering the streets and walls. Many small boutique shops and cafes. Some old, some more modern. Great views. Interesting buildings, Churches, museums. Some buildings still showing damage, apparently from the tsunami of 2004. I didn't take a guided walk, though these have been recommended. And a fantastic place to watch the sun set.

Galle Fort is one the best places of my trip in Sri Lanka. It's beautiful and so lively with restaurants, bars, and nice hotels. It's really a tourist place. You can walk around the fort and check out the views! There is a little beautiful beach near the light house of the fort. The beach is okay, but it's shallow with rock and dead coral below which sometime difficult to swim. But the water is nice blue and warm water. Oh yes, if you are into arts, antiques, or need some great souvenirs, this is the place for you! 😉

One of the oldest forts in Asia. It is maintained very well and it is clean. It has great view to the beach and the cricket stadium. There are guides who will take you around in the front either by walk or in tuktuk. There are few cafes, restaurants and stores to pick up any artifacts located around the fort. Paid parking is also available.

A must visit if in Sri Lanka. Interesting living fort that has seen centuries of invasion & history. Old buildings, churches, narrow cobbled streets with coffee shops & restaurants, boutique hotels & walking trips around the fort. We stayed at 41 Lighthouse street. A boutique hotel with just 4 rooms, a pool, a small kitchenette with a full fledged restaurant that the same owner manages with option of eating at the restaurant or getting food delivered.

Galle Fort stands out as one of Sri Lanka's most remarkable historical and archaeological sites. The panoramic 360 views it offers of Galle city and the beautiful beach are truly stunning. Situated in Galle town, it's easily accessible and the best part is that you can visit this place free of charge. The fort being surrounded by the sea on one side adds to its spectacular charm, especially when catching the sunrise or sunset. It's not just a historical gem but also a perfect spot to enjoy the natural beauty of the coastline. A must-visit for anyone exploring the rich history and scenic landscapes of Sri Lanka.

Another place in Sri Lanka made me regret why I didn't plan for more days in Ceylon! It's vast and beautiful and easily prompts you to deep dive into history. Well maintained. There are no fees for entrance. Public toilets are available upon paying trivial charges. Snacks shops and restaurants are available.

I highly recommend heading here around 4pm and doing a slow walk around in time for sunset, which was around 6pm when I visited. The Fort is big with the beach and water wrapping around it. There are a couple of places to swim, so if you go earlier you can have a dip before walking around. There are also several bars opposite the walk around the Fort if you wanted to watch the sunset with a drink. I'd recommend wearing trainers if you want to go up some of the lookouts/vantage spots with comfort, though I personally went up in sandals, I would have preferred trainers and some of the stairs and hills had loose rocks. The only down side is the amount of rubbish everywhere, but that is a lot of Sri Lanka.

Busy Fort is set on a peninsula within the walled remains of a fortress first developed by the Portuguese in the 1500s and later adapted by the Dutch and British. The National Museum displays artifacts like masks and carvings, while the National Maritime Archaeology Museum occupies a 17th-century warehouse. The lofty Galle Fort Clock Tower dates from the 1880s, and a lighthouse overlooks a small swimming beach.

Great place, I can't really find all the words to describe it, a very old city inside an old enormous fort, where you can find buildings from 16th century, the fort was built by the dutch have a lot of defence places and a hospital, church, and a lot of Islamic mosques and places, as now most of the residents of the dutch fort are muslims. The sunset view from there is amazing. There is a lighthouse and a clock tower. The ice-cream shops there are also amazing. I loved the whole place, the accommodation, the food, and the people.

This is a very wonderful home, and there is enough of room for you to spend time with your family and friends here. The interior of the fort is home to a wide variety of sites and pursuits, each of which has its own character. Some of these include going to a lighthouse, jumping into the ocean, eating street cuisine, and roaming about the city. Within the walls of the fort, there is an abundance of parking spaces accessible. Inside the walls of the fort are a great number of hotels, many of which offer rooms at reasonable rates. If you are strolling with children within the fort near the water, you should exercise extreme caution and keep a close eye on them because the water is quite deep in the area immediately adjacent to the walking path. It might be worthwhile to take a walking tour of this neighborhood in order to take in the area's wonderful old style colonial architecture. There are many places to dine, drink, and relax, however the prices reflect the fact that most of these establishments cater to tourists. Approximately two hours are required to view all of the pictures during the tour. Because there is little cover along the path, you should either bring an umbrella or sun protection with you. Free entry is provided throughout the entire region, with the exception of the museum. UNESCO site, with a large number of information boards at each location to describe its significance. Because it is the most popular tourist destination in Galle, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to come here. Magnificent antique building that occupies a considerable amount of space! There are quaint little shops and restaurants all around it. Simply strolling about and taking in the old-world allure is a pleasant way to spend some time. It is also a wonderful location to enjoy a meal at one of the many excellent restaurants that are located inside the fort! Additionally, there is no fee required to enter the grounds of the fort!

Not much shade while walking so make sure to bring sunblock or umbrella. Free entrance for the whole area except museum. UNESCO site, a lot of information boards to explain each spot. Make sure to stop by as this is the main attraction in Galle

Best experience everyone should try in Sri Lanka!! You can usually experience a lot in one place.Relaxing vibe and beautiful environment! There is so much to learn and see! If you choose this place to spend free time, this is recommended as a suitable place But it may change depending on the time you come and if you come during the sunnier season, Galle fort will tire you quite a bit and the best thing is to come during such times in the morning or evening!! The months of November and December are quite rainy, so you can enjoy its beauty without getting tired, even during the day in those months!! P. S- Make sure to preserve the beauty and legend of this place. It is the responsibility of everyone who comes here

There isn't any fort here, but a large area fortified by thick walls which housed and safe-guarded a great administration in the past. Old buildings as originally constructed are kept intact. Old church, light house, old prison, museums and the many eateries within this compound provides the feeling of the time spent is worth and satisfactory.

Galle Fort is a must-visit for its stunning Dutch architecture and panoramic views. The historical charm is captivating, but be prepared with water as it can get hot. Despite the potential heat, exploring the intricate design and enjoying the scenery is a delightful experience, making Galle Fort an essential stop for anyone in the area. Also no tickets are required to visit this fort.

I visited Galle for the first time with my husband and family. It was an awesome vacation as I enjoyed every moment spent exploring the galle city, their historical places, culture and the society. The city of Galle, nestled in the southern coast of Sri Lanka, is a charming and delightful place to visit. Popular among local as well as foreign tourists, Galle can be reached in approximately one hour from Colombo via the Southern Expressway. Galle has an abundance of culture, history, natural beauty and of course some of the best beaches on the island. It’s a great place to visit with kids, with your partner or even just by yourself. You can splurge on exclusive luxury hotels, or opt for budget friendly accommodation. Either way, you are bound to have an absolutely fantastic holiday in sunny Galle.

The fort has a colourful history, and today has a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population. The Sri Lankan government and many Dutch people who still own some of the properties inside the fort are looking at making this one of the modern wonders of the world. The heritage value of the fort has been recognized by the UNESCO and the site has been inscribed as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria iv, for its unique exposition of "an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries." The Galle Fort, also known as the Dutch Fort or the "Ramparts of Galle", withstood the Boxing Day tsunami which damaged part of coastal area Galle town. It has been since restored The British took over the fort on 23 February 1796, one week after Colombo was captured. Sri Lanka remained a British colony formally from 1815 till it became an independent island nation in 1948. The importance of Galle also declined after the British developed Colombo as their capital and main port in the mid nineteenth century.

Nice place to visit in the evening to watch the sunset.. these days there some renovations are going in the fort so its little bit difficult to go around the fort other than that is superb

One of the best place to spend the evening. I travelled galle fort more than 20 times. There are lot of restaurants but prices are high. If you can bring your own foods & mat ,you can have it on the galle fort beach. Left corner of the beach ideal . Right corner of the beach ideal for swimming.

An Old Dutch Fort. Its a great tourist sight in Galle and stuffed with restaurants and other local gem/clothe stores and some lovely Villas to spend a holiday in side the fort. We stayed at Villa 32 Middle Street. Great location to wander and take in the beauty of an old Fort. clean, friendly and highly recommended

Beautiful place to take a stroll. The light house still stands tall and majestic, don't know if it still works but I saw the lights from the light house at night. It's a great place to take a walk around esp early mornings or evenings with the cool breeze and the Indian Ocean just by the fort. The Ocean is very clean, there were some people swimming there as well. A lot of people usually come here to see the sunset which makes it very crowded but I would suggest coming here early in the mornings when there are less people. You get to enjoy the place better, clear up your head The fort isn't a very long stretch so if you're here, try walking along and till the end of the stretch.

Historically valued place from Dutch era in sri lanka with unique architectural and landscaping design with a unique vibe. Full of history defining buildings inside of the fortress including schools, churches, hospitals, restaurants, museums, spas, bungalows, mosques, and cafes touched with unique ancient Dutch architectural styles. Must visit place 👌🏾

The fort is really interesting, the streets are quaint and quiet with plenty of shops and cafes to stop and browse through. We found a nice art gallery that had a beautiful piece that was in our price range. We always try and buy a piece of art while traveling and had almost given up on finding something that we loved. When in Galle or Unawatuna going to the fort for a half day is a must do.

A very beautiful fort. A great idea to turn over the entire fort into a small village and have shops all around to cover tourism and make them support local shops and restaurants. The fort also has government offices and a 300 year old museum along with old churches. It has also a tennis court and the fort entrance is overlooking the Galle International Cricket Stadium.

The Galle Fort is regarded is one of the most picturesque locations in Sri Lanka. Because of that, it has become one of the largest tourist attractions. Galle is a southern coastal town filled with many archeological heritages. It's a facinating place to visit and one of the largest towns in Sri Lanka. The Galle Fort is one of the most valuable archealogical sites in the country which has been built by Portuguese and later used and further developed by the Dutch. Actually its a town within a town cos it houses musaeums, hotels, court houses, boutique restaurants, markets, places of worship, play grounds and houses. There are many other colonium forts situated in the country, but none of those attra t tourists like the Galle Fort. It's surely one of the greatest places to be in Sri Lanka!

The Portuguese had named this bastion as Conceycao, which meant “the pure conception.” The Dutch originally identified as the Middle Point. In 1667 it was officially named as Mark or the Moon Bastion. By 1760 there were 19 canons installed on this bastion. The main entrance to the fort lies between the Sun Bastion and the Moon Bastion. This entrance was made by the British by carving out the rampart.

Actually is a portuguese fort. It was built by the portuguese in 1584. In 1640 the dutch conquered the land and used the portuguese fort as a defense line. Is a beautifull place with a lot of buildings from the british colonial period. Such a good place to visit and buy from the local stores.

  • 5/5 Gareth C. 10 months ago on Google
You feel the history as you step into this old dutch fort. The walls are made out of rock and coral ( I guess they didn't really care about environmental conservation in those days). Standing beside one of the canons along the ramparts, one could imagine standing and guarding the fort against invading ships. The views from the walls are beautiful with it overlooking the sea as well as Galle town. You can see the Galle international Cricket stadium from the fort, but unfortunately there wasn't any game on when we were there.

Very cool and historical. You can walk around and see all the old cannons and grounds that were built by the Portuguese in 1588, later overruled by the Dutch. You can learn about the history or simply sit and watch the ocean with a calming breeze in your face. I found it all very fascinating, seeing the old buildings/relics on the perimeter of the fort. You can see the cricket ground from here as well as seeing local boys play, so many beautiful street dogs too! There are restaurants, cafes and lots of shops around. It has an incredibly European feel, it reminded me very much of Spain or Italy. From the roads and architecture to the shops and decor. Just a few minutes after leaving the fort/shopping area, you will return back to Sri Lanka but during your visit to the fort, you will be transported to Europe and immersed in very rich history. You don't need to pay any fee or buy anything if you don't want to :) also wasn’t that busy when I visited.

Galle Fort is an Unesco world heritage site initially build by Portuguese and fortified by Dutch during 17th century. Then it came under contract by the British colony and they made many modifications. This fort consisted of public administered buildings, business houses, residential houses, religious places, cobblestone streets, ancient Dutch buildings, and vibrant atmosphere create an irresistible charm that captivates the senses. Strolling through its narrow alleys, I discovered hidden boutiques, cozy cafes, and breathtaking ocean views. The blend of colonial architecture and local culture is simply mesmerizing. The fort's rich history and vibrant ambiance make it a must-see destination for anyone visiting this place.

  • 5/5 Ross D. 4 months ago on Google
There is a lot to see in Galle Fort and it took a couple of days to explore the whole area but we started with walks along the old walls which gave nice views to the sea and the interior of the fort. This was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. So it is yet another leftover remains of the days of colonisation. But nevertheless it is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument.
