Today we came to find my wife's father after 35 years. The Father in charge of this holy place was very kind to give us full support.

It was a very calm and soothing environment. But I was very curious about the history and the portuguese influence, my visit's focus was to experience those but it wasn't showcased well.

The St. Anthony's Shrine is one of the main shrines of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kandy. The church is located in Wahakotte, in the north of Matale District, about 32 km (20 mi) from Matale and is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. The church is one of the most sacred pilgrim places for Catholics in Sri Lanka and a national shrine. The Benedictine mission is attached to the church. St.Joseph Vaz, apostle of Sri Lanka established the church community in his time. He established a stone cross in the middle of the village. King Rajasinghe gave him this village as a gift for his service. Church has the oldest statue of St.Anthony of Padua in Sri Lanka. You can go there and pray peacfully without getting distracted by noisy environment. Church feast clelebrates every year in June 13 and second week of august (B'day of St.Anthony). Devotees from all over Sri Lanka visit the church during feast time.

Peaceful and calm environment. Ideal place to spend few hours on spiritual activities. This national shrine houses the miraculous statue of St. Anthony and two beautiful ivory statues.
