The Ravana cave consists of a part of the tunnel which is connected to the Ravana Falls in Ella. Tales say that King Rama of India had a beautiful wife, Queen Sita. He kidnapped Queen Sita, brought her to Sri Lanka and hide her in these caves. The tunnels served as a quick way of transportation through the hills and also as a secret passage. They connect with all the important cities, airports and dairy farms in Sri Lanka. A closer look at these tunnels indicates that they are man-made and not just natural formations. The architectural details of these tunnels prove the brilliant way of building of King Ravana. Once you have conquered the 650 steps, you’ll arrive at the historical Ravana Cave. The cave itself is pretty small, just to make your expectations realistic. You are allowed to go inside of the cave for only 200 meters. After those 200 meters there is a big stone that has been kept by the Government prohibiting people from going further inside. The view from the cave is impressive and if you like history and a little adventure, this is a great thing to do in Ella!

It's all about the journey and NOT the destination on this one. Cost is $200 rupees, so nothing. It's fairly easy to get to and close to town. It's a beautiful jungle walk about 500 meters long. Enjoy the wild life and scenery and when you enter the cave, look back and you'll notice the entrance is in the shape of a sharks fin! 👍 The temple is nothing to write home about, and honestly, I'm not in the slightest bit interested at this point. There are much better locations for that!

It's a pre historic cave and human dwelling. 20000 year old human remains have been found here, now kept in museum. As per Ramayana, Ravana kept Sita hidden for some time. It takes about 20min to climb the stairway. The cave takes 5min to explore.

The Ravana’s Cave situated 2 km away from the Ella town. It is a historical Cave . King Ravina used to hide Queen 👸 Sitha. 650 steps to reach Ravana’s cave . Then we can go inside 200 meters . It’s a small cave. After 200 meters one big stone block the cave. Inside of the cave one kind of birds made the nests 🪹 . Not that much adventure.

In a world replete with the mundane and the predictable, a daring soul must occasionally veer off the beaten path to unearth the very essence of adventure. My latest escapade led me to the mystical Ravan Cave, tucked away like an ancient secret, whispering its tales of yore amidst the resplendent mountains near Ella. To reach this hallowed sanctuary, one must traverse a path that would put Hercules to shame. Braving the treacherous terrain, I embarked on an arduous journey where each step was a testament to human resilience, and each breath a reminder of the beauty that lay ahead. As I climbed higher and higher, the world unfurled before me like a canvas painted by the gods themselves. The verdant mountains rose majestically, their peaks scraping the heavens, while the valleys sank into the abyss, concealing untold mysteries. It was as if nature itself had conspired to create the perfect backdrop for the Ravan Cave, an enigma that enticed explorers with promises of untold wisdom. Upon entering the hallowed chamber, I was immediately struck by the palpable aura of antiquity. A thousand tales echoed through the cavernous walls, ancient whispers of battles fought and loves lost, of heroes born and civilizations crumbled. Time stood still within this sacred space, a refuge from the relentless march of progress that threatened to devour the world outside. In the embrace of Ravan Cave, I found solace and inspiration, a reminder that even in our fast-paced, digitized existence, there still lingered places where the echoes of the past resonated with the present. This archeological treasure, nestled in the bosom of nature, offered an unrivaled communion with the elements, and the opportunity to reflect on our very being. For those bold enough to brave the difficult path, the Ravan Cave awaits, a testament to the indomitable spirit of adventure and the eternal allure of the unknown. I beseech thee, fellow seekers of wisdom and beauty, to embark on this pilgrimage to the cradle of history. You shall emerge, as I did, forever transformed.

If you have time in hand, you can chose to do it but you wont miss anything if you not climb this. Its a good exciting hike though! But got nothing to offer at the end. I was literary alone, and also quite freaked towards the end of the hike hahah

Best 200 rupees I've spent in Sri Lanka. There are a lot of steep steps up to the cave, but the views on the way up are good. It's like a trek in the jungle to a chior of bird song. There are very few tourists at the cave, at least there weren't when I was there. It's not the best cave in the World but you feel a good sense of achievement on reaching it. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk up and down.

It was a climb well worth. The feeling you get at the top with the very cold atmosphere surrounded by only rocks is super. Never have I felt that awesome anywhere else .

Historians suggest that King Ravana used the cave as a hiding place for Princess Sita. It's situated about 2 km from Ella town. Located at the base of a cliff, the cave is among the most famous historical places to visit in Sri Lanka and You will have to climb 1000 steps to reach the cave. The tunnels in the cave are the representation of Ravana's architectural genius that acted as a fast mode of transportation and also as a hidden passage through the hills. Historians and tourists alike can visit the place to witness the sight live where the epic saga took place. Highlights - It has an underground lake with blue water known as Nil Diya Pokuna. - It is surrounded by lush greenery and forest. Price - LKR 150 copied.

A popular tourist destination is the Ravana Cave, also known as the Ravana Ella Cave. It is located in the Ella village. According to mythology, the cave is where King Ravana, a major figure in the Ramayana, went to hide. It is also thought to have served as a temporary abode for King Ravana during his exile. The cave is perched on a rock wall and provides stunning views of the surrounding area. Visitors can explore the Ravana Cave's chambers and corridors, which are illuminated with artificial lights. The cave's natural beauty is enhanced by diverse rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. To get to the cave, travelers must hike or climb 650 stairs to the entrance. The journey can be physically difficult, but the breathtaking scenery makes it worthwhile. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil environment and the breathtaking surroundings once inside. It's especially difficult with the rain because so many insects come your way. Be extremely cautious with snakes and leeches. that appear unexpectedly on your feet. Furthermore, to avoid mosquito bites, it is best to wear shoes alone. Even while ascending, be mindful of your steps because the rock steps are in such good condition that they can harm your feet. It is likewise not recommended to go in the evening. as climbing will take a long time. And the atmosphere deteriorates in the evening when it is dark and pouring. Carry a lamp if you intend to visit in the evening. You may also come across the company of dogs. which is lovely and cute. Who among the tourists desires food? Overall, the location was lovely and charming.

Overrated cave, it would have been worth it if you could go deep inside the cave but that isn’t possible. You can only access few meters in and then seems like it is covered there’s only a very tiny passageway, I would have continued but there were bats right by that point and history tell us bats aren’t safe

A must visit on the Ramayana trail. The climb up is tough with close to 700 steps. The first 500 steps are stone and well formed and easy to climb. The last 200 or so are boulder steps and treacherous if you go in the rain. Would not recommend for people above 60 but it’s your call. Take a tuk tuk on the way back to the Main road if you’ve come walking because you will be sweaty and tired

About 500m from the main road. Can travel by any vehicle till the steps which leads to the Cave. Have to buy tickets priced reasonably. The staircases will lead to the Cave, a climb of about 30 - 45 minutes. We were the first climbers on the day we went. A venerable thero explained about the historical value of the Cave. This Cave was part of a intricate rock tunnel system, he said there were paths directly leading to nil diya pokuna (a underwater lake) & seetha eliya (garden). These were the reasons ravana choose to this as a hideout for sitha. Afterwards this was looted & destroyed by grave diggers for its treasure. So now the access paths within these mountains are destroyed & untraceable. Now its a bat shelter. Good for hiking & people who love history. Also good for pilgrims who travel on rama's trails.

Easy access .. purchase ticket from little shop kiosk and then enter the little blue gate ... 30 mins approx non stop up hill steps but hand rail all the way to help. ( especially helpfully being older and overweight) Cave is small but worth the hike especially if you have kids.

Ravana's Cave, also known as Ravana Ella Cave, is a captivating natural wonder steeped in mythology and located in the central hills of Sri Lanka. Nestled in the vicinity of Ella, this cave holds a special place in the island's cultural and historical tapestry, drawing visitors with its mystical aura and the tales that surround it. According to local folklore, Ravana's Cave is associated with the legendary King Ravana, a central character in the ancient Indian epic Ramayana. King Ravana is said to have been a powerful and enigmatic ruler, and the cave is believed to be one of his hideouts during the time of the Ramayana. The cave's connection to this mythological narrative adds an intriguing layer to its natural beauty, making it more than just a geological formation. The cave itself is an imposing cleft in the rock, situated on the Ella-Wellawaya Road. Accessible via a trek through the lush, verdant landscape, the journey to Ravana's Cave is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself. The trek offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills, tea plantations, and the cascading Ravana Ella Falls, creating a picturesque backdrop that enhances the allure of the cave. Upon reaching the cave, visitors are greeted by a sizable opening in the rock, revealing a cavernous space within. The cave's interior is characterized by its cool, dimly lit atmosphere, with sunlight filtering through crevices in the rock. Exploring the depths of Ravana's Cave evokes a sense of mystery and wonder, as one imagines the tales of King Ravana echoing through its chambers. Beyond its mythological significance, Ravana's Cave also serves as a vantage point offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The elevated position provides a unique perspective of Ella and its lush surroundings, making the visit a rewarding experience for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. While the cave itself is a compelling attraction, the journey to Ravana's Cave encompasses more than myth and geological wonders. The trek through the scenic terrain allows visitors to connect with the natural beauty of Sri Lanka, immersing themselves in the charm of its hills, waterfalls, and diverse flora. The journey becomes a holistic experience that intertwines cultural narratives with the serenity of the island's landscapes. In conclusion, Ravana's Cave stands as a testament to Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage and natural splendor. Whether viewed through the lens of mythology or appreciated as a geological marvel, the cave beckons adventurers and storytellers alike. The fusion of legend and landscape makes Ravana's Cave a unique destination that not only captivates the imagination but also provides a gateway to the beauty and cultural depth of Sri Lanka's central hills.

The place is a heritage cave going inside was a good experience. The only problem was that the place was not maintained at all, the history of the King Ravana should be displayed so that visitors can understand the place more, I met a few groups of visitors from Canada and Europe,

Don't get me wrong, If you know the history of this place you would understand its significance. If you're looking for something visually stunning or have potential for exploring however, you may be disappointed. That's not why I'm giving it 3 stars tho. Lack of funding from authorities for promotion, maintenance and providing tourists with guidance has let down the potential experience this landmark has to offer. If you visit the cave, please also visit the temple nearby. All maintenance work is funded by contributions made by visitors to the temple.

The ravana cave is located in the top of the mountain. It is very dark inside the cave also there is nothing inside it.They charge us 200 LKR per person for the entry ticket. The view from the top is amazing apart from that there is only a ancient cave where people visit.

The cave is a huge cavity in a rock which people say leads to an underground tunnel. There have been reports stating that the tunnel leads to an underground open area with a lake and rooms, which are assumed to be parts of Ravana's palace. It is believed to have been the cave where Sita was imprisoned.

Good little hike. The cave is small, but the local guy up there offers to light up the cave with a very strong flashlight for a few hundred rupees. Hundreds of swallows have their nests there. My kids had a blast studying their nests.

Overrated. Spent your time (and money, 200 lkr) elsewhere. It’s quite the effort to get there and all you get is a small area which they call a cave to attract tourists…

You can travel by any vehicle about half a km till the steps that leads to the Cave. Tickets had to be purchased at the counter, and the price was reasonable. It took me about 40 minutes to climb the stairs. While climbing up, you will be exposed to breathtaking views. It was a little slippery near the cave, and there were leeches. It was indeed a pleasant experience that you should take advantage of if you visit Ella.
