Teaching Hospital Kandy is the second largest hospital in Sri Lanka. The bed strength of the hospital was 2291, as of 2011. The fall of the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815 led to the establishment of Western (English) rule. Dr. John Davy was an army surgeon and physician to Governor Robert Brownrigg from 1817 to 1819. Davy came to Kandy with the British Troops and lived next to Diyawadana Nilame’s resident in Malabar Street. A Military Hospital was built in a renovated existing building and was located at the site of the present β€œKandyan Art Association”. Later it served both military and civilians especially for Cholera and Small pox. After 1821, Indian labourers came to Sri Lanka for coffee and later tea enterprises. Civil hospitals were needed due to poor nutrition, Cholera and Malaria. Once the civil medical department was separated from the military service, Colonial Surgeons were appointed to Central Province. This medical Board appointed vaccination officers who were responsible for vaccinating the public against small pox. In around 1861, an infectious disease hospital was established in Deyyannewela (the small pox hospital). This pauper hospital was later expanded to become the General Hospital Kandy. One of the very first buildings of the Kandy Hospital was the Cholera ward, opened in 1866. It was located at the site of the current laundry in between the kitchen and the old KSM building.[3]

Government hospital which located in Kandy town. Easy access from Kandy town/ Kandy railway station & from goodshed bus stand. Facilities are bit low but kind service. Very crowded place & there are lots of people. They don’t take patients in Sundays & in Sundays you have to go to Peradeniya Hospital which located near Peradeniya Botanical Garden.

A long queue can be expected for admission of patients. A parking is a big problem here. You can park your vehicle in the nearby Bogambara car park and walk towards the hospital. The fees are reasonable there. If you park the vehicle on the side of the road in front of the hospital, you could be fined by the police. The hospital staff can be somewhat unkind sometimes but its understandable because the hospital is always busy. Other than that the staff is hardworking and really helpful.

My experience at The National Hospital - Kandy has been nothing short of exceptional. As the second largest hospital in the country, it stands as a beacon of medical excellence and comprehensive care in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. With an impressive bed strength of 2741, the hospital effortlessly accommodates a vast number of patients, ensuring that each one receives the specialized care they deserve. The range of services provided here is unparalleled, covering all medical subspecialties under one roof. This institution is not just a hospital; it’s a hub for secondary and tertiary specialist care, rehabilitation, and a cornerstone for clinical education connected with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Peradeniya. The adjoining Nursing School further emphasizes its commitment to comprehensive healthcare education and practice. The hospital’s infrastructure and resources are impressive, with 75 inpatient wards, 12 intensive care units, and 11 operating theatres, among others, ensuring that every medical need is addressed with the utmost professionalism. The staff, from the 964 dedicated doctors (including 141 consultants) to the 2181 compassionate nurses, exhibit professionalism and kindness at every interaction, making each patient’s journey towards healing as comfortable as possible. What makes NH Kandy truly stand out is its role as an educational center for undergraduates and postgraduates in medicine, para-medical studies, nursing, and midwifery. This emphasis on education ensures that the hospital is at the forefront of medical innovations and practices, benefiting not just the patients but the medical community at large. Serving as the apex center for clinical care for two-thirds of the country, NH Kandy manages to maintain a high standard of care despite the massive scale of operations. Its contribution to the health and well-being of the population is immeasurable, making it a true national treasure in healthcare. Whether you are seeking medical care, support for a loved one, or a place for medical education, The National Hospital - Kandy is an institution where excellence is not just a goal, but a reality. My heartfelt thanks to all the staff for their dedication and hard work. Your efforts make a world of difference.

Few days back I had to go to the ward no 47 for prostate treatment.I was disgusted to note the rude behavior of the house officer ( a lady doctor wearing a hijab) and some nurses. I observed several times this lady doctor was making fun of the illnesses of the innocent patients and talking to the patients in a thundering tone. She treats patients as if they are uncivilized bumpkins who have just emerged from stone age caves. She has just forgotten the fact that she has reaped the full benefit of free education at the expense of tax paying public, who are none other than the patients themselves. The entire ward is in an unhygienic condition. All these things happen in a country that has gone to dogs

I'm not going to state hospitals much. Anyway today went there and impressed by the conditions and facilities. Hospital cleaner than i ever imagined and having modern tech all over the buildings. Sri Lanka Transport Board operate buses from hospital to Kandy bus terminals frequently. Of course, this is the second largest hospital in Sri Lanka. Hospital having officials on every block and they will guide you anywhere with a friendly tone. As you know Kandy is a city that highly integrated with Buddhism, so you will see multiple Buddha statues and religious stuff on literally every ward. But the hospital having diverse staff and you won't face any kind of discrimination.

One of the largest hospitals in the country, hence it is equipped with most of the things that the Sri Lankan national medical system is capable of handling. Parking is a huge issue here, and queues for treatment can be long. Always expect lot of waiting time.

Sri Lanka's second national hospital. There are main specialties as well as subspecialties such as cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, and nephrology. Although it is a busy place, it has a good patient management setup. Have a good team.

This five start rating is for Dr. Chathuranga Keppatiyagama's ward (Ward No.20). The ward is very good and Doctors, nurses and, minor staffs are verymuch helpful. They do not even hurt patients by words. Dr. Chathuranga Keppatiyagama is a very nice person and hats off to him for keeping the everyone under his control.

Wait time too long overnight for little treatment and won’t tell you until you pay $100 nonrefundable deposit. It was only $30 done in an hour in private hospital

  • 1/5 Rajatha A. 2 months ago on Google β€’ 2 reviews New
The service is very sad.. It takes a lot of time even to do a very minor surgery.. In many cases the patients are kept near the operating rooms for the surgery and then they are taken back to the wards without doing the surgery. They fast..instead they don't even give saline..I don't know whose fault these are..but it seems to me that the services received after becoming a national hospital are not satisfactory than when it was a teaching hospital..

Dear Helath Minster, Honest feedback in Kandy hospital MRI scanning patients have to wait very long days in every day while hospital staff drags them to scanning room every day. As per general witness, it's a surprise to see that eventually first priority goes to hospital staff or their friends and family, while some serious patients are waiting in the queue for days. As a nation in the world, we are very famous for the first come, first served method. But we don't know what has happened to us so far. Kindly notify Kandy Hospital Management that MRI and other scanning protocols must be altered with priorities, not with napotism. Thank you!
