Malwathu Maha Viharaya (also called Malwatta temple) is a Buddhist monastery located in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is the headquarters of the Malwatta chapter of Siyam Nikaya and one of the two Buddhist monasteries that holds the custodianship of sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha kept in Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy. The chief incumbent of the Malwathu Maha Viharaya is the Mahanayaka thero of Malwatta chapter of Siyam nikaya, a leading Buddhist monastic fraternity in Sri Lanka. The present chief incumbent of Malwathu Maha Viharaya is venrable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thero.

These pictures are from the Welivita Sri Saranankara Museum which is situated in the Malwathu Maha Vihara premises. It is the same temple which Saranankara thero used to live during 18th century. In this little museum, one can see his tools, his writings, and every item he used in his humble little room as the last ‘Sangaraja’ of the island. Also there are alphabets of several languages written in ‘Puskola poth’.

This temple is enrich in history and the ‘Siam Sandeshaya’ has been sent by the king of Siam in 1750s enclosed in a ivory case to re-establish higher ordination in Sri lanka, to Valivita Sanagaraja thero. Upali thero used to live here.

Malwathu temple is of great importance to Buddhism in Sri Lanka and located very close to the lake.

This place happen to be one of the oldest and eccentric religious places in Kandy.. Well recommend for tourists who interested in "sightseeing".. Although its the governing centre and the quarters for one of the major sects in srilankan monk community, and responsible for performing traditional and ritualistic matters, yet this place is way less helpful in terms of practicing dhamma in a practical sence.. Therefore, litterally not recommend for people who seeks dhamma..

This consists of a pohoya ge where buddhist monks get together to appoint monks into various positions and also to conduct buddhist rituals. This pohoya ge is more than 250 years old..

Went in for a quick look when it was raining, and some kindly monks took us in and gave us food and tea. Very nice people and an interesting complex too!

This is the center for Malwathu chapter in Sri Lanka Buddhists ( other one is Asgiriya) .The temple is considered as a powerhouse and chief monk one of the most powerful figure in Sri Lankan socio cultural setting. The building represents architectural style of Kandyan Kingdom era.
