Nr 42 shop only! Found it by reading reviews on trip advisor Richard is an amazing guy - you will get answer for everything you are asking. Was pretty hard to find it but that's why I will upload his photo so everyone can recognise him. Nice little shop with loads of tees, coffees and other thingies. When you will come to the market other guys will try to block you and suggest to go to their shop but just find the way to shop 42! Compliments! Thank you so much! we are so happy meeting you !

The Kandy Municipal Central Market is a fantastic place to shop for a wide variety of items at very reasonable prices. Located on Market Street and managed by the Kandy Municipal Council, this market caters to a multitude of needs, including groceries, meat, fruits, vegetables, stationery, banking, and more. Prices here are incredibly fair, making it a preferred shopping destination for both locals and tourists. 🌿 The market is renowned for its selection of tea, spices, clothing and garment materials, fruits, and bags, among other things. It's an excellent place to shop like a local and fully immerse yourself in the experience. 🚫 However, it's important to note that the market can be quite bustling, and there can be a fair amount of haggling. Some scams may also occur, and the overall environment may not be the most pleasant in terms of odor. 🌏 For tourists, the Kandy Municipal Central Market offers a great opportunity to experience local life and purchase items at very affordable prices. It's particularly known for its spices, herbs, and handicrafts, which are signature items of Sri Lanka. Additionally, you can find groceries, fruits, vegetables, and fish if you plan to prepare your own meals during your travels. The market is also an excellent place to explore the island's variety of delicious and exotic fruits. 👍 If you found this review helpful, please mark it as such to encourage more elaborate reviews that help others discover and appreciate wonderful places! ✅

If you are a foreigner tourist, everyone will try to take you to places and sell you items that you don't want. Like in every market in the world. You just have to be careful and know how to handle it. Besides from that, I highly recommend to go to the fruit side and ask a shopper to give you samples of every fruit they got there. They won't charge you money, so offer them a tip or buy some fruits after trying them. People there are really nice and respectful

Went there 2021/12 in the afternoon. Probably a great place if you want to explore some local products or just buying some goodies for your friends at home (spices, tea, blankets etc) but unfortunately we could not walk even 10 meters without being pulled into a conversation by the merchants. So there was just no chance to look at the goods for a second on your own. We left after 20 minutes - that was too annoying. Would have liked to stay longer.

I was over charged in the spice shop. Buy at a supermarket where they have fixed prices on display. The worker at the Spice Shop is a much better haggler than you. He will take full advantage of your stupidity, and unfamiliarity with the currency. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

It's a Kandy local market and you can buy many things here, there're clothes, foods, pharmacy and good souvenirs here. If you visit Kandy, it's a place which is good to walk around. And most of people are friendly here, because you are customers. If you like to shopping, it's also a place you cannot miss it. Don't forget to bargain for the good price, it's always work here. The stuffs always give a high price for you, so be a smart tourist to save money for the journey.

Searched up the markets location online and are glad we visited! Full of cool shops with a range of spices, fresh fruit and veg, bags, ornaments, gifts, there really is something for anyone looking for something to remember Sri Lanka by. The downstairs focuses on food items with the upstairs more on clothing and non-perishables. We managed to get some bargains for elephant trousers and little keepsakes, and even got some great deals on fresh spices. Now the thing to watch out for is tourist pricing. The vast majority of shops will have fake prices shown to take advantage of the tourists who visit. However we managed to find one shop who the owner was so genuine and offered us local prices from the offset. They all state they are offering local prices, but when your paying 50 rupees for a tube of cumin and 55 rupees for chilli powder, then you know it's much closer to local prices (Vs other shops selling for 150-200 per tube). Expect to bargain on most of the stores but also expect that some won't budge as I guess tourists are usually happily paying the higher prices. Definitely a must see if your in the area and in need for gifts!

Colorful, both the fruits and the characters selling them.... But as a tourist I have a target on my back and ended up paying about triple the market value, and told "it's the local price". I expect these things, but it always leaves a bad taste

I loved the market. It felt very real, my wife and I were the only non-local people and although some people were a bit hassly, it really wasn't bad. We bought some lovely wooden spatulas and spoons for £1 each, much much cheaper than in touristy places like Ella. And the food market on the outside of the main building is a beautiful sight. The butcher shops were an interesting sight, with crows tearing into bits of meat left out... Very Mad Max vibes.

This place has all the amenities yet it has an awful smell which is very unpleasant. To be very honest I've not gone to this place more than once due to its foul smell!! Apart from that it's a convenient place to get all ur groceries at a cheap rate.

I have felt the real taste of Srilanka inside. Different businesses inside (food, souvenirs, clothes, spices and tea 🍵) Cheap. Relaxing area out of the noise. Strongly recommend 👌 👍

One of Very busy place in Kandy city and there lot of groceries and shops inside the market. You can by fish, any kind of meat, fruits and veggies from here. Few cafes are located in and there's a public toilet too. Hygiene is not in good level. There's a ATM nearby and parking available sometime. Good place for tourists to experience Sri Lankan market life.

Many fresh meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, groceries available. Quite crowded, specially during weekends and holidays. Foreigners could get an experience, but bargain before paying (except for fresh items).

A must go place to see if you are a foreign tourist, to see the authentic Sri Lankan market. It's not the cleanest place. But interesting.

Very good place to shop like locals and enjoy the experience. The only negative thing about the place: the hassling, too much. You have to be firm and stop them from following you from one shop to another. You can but the spices from here, better and cheaper than the other markets. Also some clothes.

You should go to No. 28, to Mister Rishard, for buying spices, tea or aryuvedic medicine. He is the most friendly and kind man and makes really fair prices! You need to go inside the central market and then his shop is at ground level straight ahead! Enjoy 🫶

Don't go here if you have been to the Spice garden, you'll pay a fraction for the same spice mixes. We went a little further into the market to No. 28 half the price of the shops at the front. Also the chap in the shop is great, helpful like all Sir lankan shop keepers. However made buying spices into an experience.

Good service, but staff no much friendly. They trying to show off them are smarter than public. Governs can teach all staff to show how friendly are Mahanuwara People, We are One most friendliness nation in the world. Unfortunately now these good habits are disappear with time. Overall service are good.

I heard from locals that the place is very nice to look at, but that the prices are a scam and that it's better to just buy whatever in a supermarket. Because of that, I didn't buy anything at the market. But to experience its atmosphere and to see what everything can be bought at the market in Kandy, the place works wonderfully and you can freely roam around.

Nice place for local food and vegetables. But also for souvenirs. Smell can be about rough sometimes due to the fish market next to it.

A lot of vegetables and spices market on first floor and some souvenir on second one, the prices are not expensive but you need to bargain for reasonable prices, in all good places to buy, of course they insist on selling and when you enter the shop you can't easily come out, better to compare the prices and be sure the quality what you buy, there were very crowded and healthy rules like wearing mask not respected and find some people coughing there l

Really nice place to shop meat items, vegetables, fish, fruits and other daily essentials. Price is low compare to other market places in kandy specially for vegetables and fish. Fish here is very fresh and also you can buy fresh beef from here. I think this is the only place you can buy beef in kandy city. Sellers here is very friendly but I should advise you sometimes there is about 1% scams. So please be careful from these people.

Mostly you can see fruit shops and vegetable shops. You can buy things in cheap rates. moreover you can negotiate with the price. Most of the shop gets fresh foods in daily basis. There are some drawbacks here. Some shop owners didn't maintain and clean surrounding area.

  • 4/5 Sheep S. 2 years ago on Google
Great for all your food needs. Great for spices dried fruits, fresh fruits, meats dairy, pretty much everything. Have a good walk around and get 2 or 3 quotes from different shops. Most are selling the same things. And remember to bargain the price. You will always be quoted top price unless you are local.
