This sanctuary is not for everyone to set foot in. The area is under the control of the Sri Lankan Navy. Without the permission of the Navy no one can trespass. The center piece of the sanctuary is the reservoir deep inside the forest. After about 8 km drive along a gravel road that is most suitable for a vehicle with genuine 4 WD capabilities it is possible to reach the reservoir. It's beside the Navy base. The area around the reservoir is home to many types of wildlife including wild buffalo and the Asiatic Elephant. In the evening both these giants may be observed enjoying a dip in the reservoir. Abundance of bird life including the raptors is another attraction of the area on the bank of the water mass. The stretch of the gravel track starting @ the Tincomalee - Colombo main road can be dangerous at times since elephants could be crossing or occupying the road. The drive is however really rewarding.
