Staff was friendly, food was not the best - came here because I miss Malaysian and Thai cuisine a lot. We ordered these items: 1. Roti Telur (3 stars) - it was too thick and lacked taste unless you dipped it into the thin curry it came with - it is usually cooked in oil but this was flaky; 2. Chicken Satay (4 stars) - this was good and the most enjoyable dish on the menu that we tried but could have had more flavour and a thicker peanut sauce; 3. Beef Rendang (3.5 stars) - was a good flavour and had the chilli sign on it but was not hot by any means, so not sure why it was on the menu; 4. Pad Thai (0 stars, sorry) - I was completely let down by this, it came out a bright orange with peanuts on top and looked nothing like the authentic pad thai - it tasted more like rice noodles drenched in sweet and sour chicken sauce and I couldn't eat it after a few mouthfuls. I felt very disappointed with my experience. I saw people ordering Chinese cuisine and thought maybe we should have ordered those but all in all it was not the best experience for Malaysian/Thai cuisine.

Honestly, don’t get appetizers there frozen then heated but I really liked the sweet and sour chicken we got: spring rolls crab Rangoon sweet tea sweet and sour chicken and sesame chicken the sweet tea is awesome cause it’s not overly sweet and surprisingly not those over sweeten teas, we also got egg fried rice which was dry so not recommended oh and the sweet and sour chicken looks really red but I recommend it, totally: 48.88 we paid 50 plus a 10 dollar tip we may come back! (Other person ordered water just fyi)

First restaurant visit in Charlotte and the food at Malaya Kitchen was incredible, some of the best egg drop soup I’ve ever had and really delicious Pad Thai. The staff were very kind and helpful with spice levels (ask for extra home made hot oil). Will definitely return to try more dishes on the menu.

I’ve been there twice already. Good portions and friendly staff.

Roti telur was good although I would have loved it if the bread could be a bit more flavorful. I agree with other reviewers that this appetizer tasted bland and the sauce should be thicker. Nonetheless, I enjoyed what I ordered. The thing that elevated my review to 4 stars is the belacan! Very strong shrimp smell and goes well with the white rice.

I came in for a late lunch and enjoyed every bite! The owner and server were very nice and accommodating. The flavors were very authentic to Malaysian cuisine I had while I did my study abroad in Singapore. We started with the Roti Telur and shared the Hainan Chicken and Beef Rendang. The Roti Telur was simple and tasty but the curry sauce that was served with it was awesome. It is thinner than traditional Indian curry but still very flavorful. The Hainan Chicken was delicious and the Hainanese rice was so good. I especially enjoyed the ginger scallion sauce that accompanied the dish. It really brought out the flavors of the chicken. The Beef Rendang was tender and perfectly spicy. Overall, all the food and service was great and I will be back to enjoy more food soon!

I’m updating my review, because this restaurant has been a huge disappointment the last two times. The vegetable Tom yum soup was pretty good. The Basil beef had no basil and was tasteless; the tasty spicy chicken was sweet. May not go back there for luncheon entrées.

Order was not taken correctly and customer service is poor. We asked for Malaysian Fried rice and asked how it differed from Regular fried rice and learnt that Malaysian is sweet and hot and spicy and as we do not like such flavor we said to get us regular fried rice. We were served both the rice items. We told that we only ordered vegetarian and they took away the other. Another waiter brought the rice back to us after 5 minutes and we thought they brought it to us as complimentary as it would go waste. When asked after taking a portion of it they said they would charge us for it and they did. The item was awful and upset the stomach even though we had only a portion of it. Our bill was $16 additional for it (gratuity 18% already included) and it ruined the whole experience. Rest if the food was fine. The portion sizes are smaller but good for one person. Samosas were also small in comparison to Indian samosas. They should treat customers better and confirm the order and not shove extra items.

I’ve been taking my boys to this place for well over 6 months now and I have to say I always love it just the same each time. My personal favorite dishes are the Udon and chicken fried rice. Portions are fantastic and overall quality is great too. They always take good care of us here.

This is like a family restaurant -all dishes are large portion with reasonable price. 【Crispy Duck】 like Peking Duck, served with green onion, cucumber and wraps. The sauce is authentic, though the wraps are too thick. 【Hainan Chicken】my fav dish here! Healthy, flavorful and served with secret sauce. 【Roti Canai】is the appetizer, tastes good. The sauce is watery, would be better if it’s thicker.

I'm all about Asain cuisine. My wife and I have been searching for a good Chinese place in Charlotte, and at Malaya Kitchen, we found it. The food is really quite good. The portions are a little smaller than what I was expecting, but it was really delicious. The atmosphere is more high-end than the average Chinese restaurant, and it's in one of the more central located parts of South Charlotte.

I highly recommend Hainan chicken from this place! It tasted authentic, tender and flavorful. For around 20 dollars, you get half chicken with rice, more than enough for 2 people. I think it’s a great deal! I can see myself ordering takeout from this place a lot whenever I crave for Hainan chicken.

One of the best Asian food. Must try their crispy tofu and veg noodles. O my god, they are so tasty and so much of the quantity. I had pack the left over as I could not leave such a yummy food. Their desserts are also very good.

I got it to-go & it was hot and fresh. I was actually baffled at how good it tasted. The broth bursted with flavor & the noodles had two different sizes which made the texture fun. I will say they didn’t include any silverware or napkins so be sure to ask or grab it on the way out.

The food was really good and served really hot. The roti was too crispy, it should have been soft, but it could have just been overheated. I recommend the malay roll, it was very tasty. The dessert was good and I would definitely have it again, it looks weird in picture but it’s very satisfying.

You've got to check out the Hainan chicken at this spot – it's seriously amazing! The flavors are totally legit, and that chicken is super tender. They give you a big serving of half a chicken with rice, enough for two peeps. It's a sweet deal, and I'm definitely gonna be ordering takeout from this joint whenever I'm craving Hainan chicken. 🍗🤤

I rarely write bad reviews, usually opting to simply never visit the place again. But I just left this place that is so shockingly awful that I had to share. I got the veggie fried egg rolls, basil chicken w/ fried rice, and the veggie hot and sour soup. Nothing tasted like what it should've been. The soup was more like oil soup with veggies. Barely any sweet and sour flavor. The egg rolls were too greasy to even consider eating. I've never seen egg rolls where there was pools of grease left behind. The basil chicken was just severely overcooked chicken and veggies drowned in guess what? So much oil that you couldn't taste anything else. Ironically, the only thing that wasn't fried or drowned in oil was the FRIED RICE! This was plain white rice with an egg tossed in it. No flavor at all. There went my $20 or so. It was all so horrible that it went straight to the trash.

The Taiwanese beef noodles were good but the restaurant would not accommodate my request for extra beef even at an additional cost. I’ve never been to a restaurant that would not accommodate extra protein. The servers were also not the most friendly.
