One of the oldest famous church at Nagercoil city. This church was placed in a tiny area includes school and other shops enclosed by the busy road, the next road leads to Nagercoil Railway Station. Very easy to get here. The gigantic pillars are the most iconic one. Every year at the end of November month, there is a grand festival which was celebrated as Xavier's fest. During this period of time, all religion people gather at this place and worship. It is still believed that people are getting healthy life by St.xavier's blessings. Gathering of different religious people and the unity is the beauty of Kanyakumari people. .

Saint Francis Xavier, a Spanish Jesuit missionary, landed in Goa in May 1542 and he sailed from Goa to Cape Comorin in October 1542 on missionary tour to Travancore Once a great band of dacoits attacked Travancore. Raja`s forces could`t combat the enemy successfully, but Xavier chased away the marauders at Vadasery by raising his Crucifix aloft and shouting at them. Very pleased with Xavier, the Raja showed special regards and gratitudes to him.At Kottar, Xavier had a dwelling house and a small church. Tradition says that the heathens set fire to Xavier`s house and reduced it to ashes, but they were struck with awe when they saw the holy man on his knees devoutly praying, not in the least touched by the flames. To mark the place a cross was put up, to which miraculous powers were attributed. From the time the church was built on the spot, a lamp is kept perpetually burning. Even Hindus go there and make vows and pour oil. Miracles are recorded to have taken place there; and hence multitudes of devout Catholic pilgrims from British India, Ceylon and Malacca  resort to the annual festival at St. Xavier`s church, Kottar, about December of every year. Christianity in Travancore was introduced by the disciple of Jesus Christ St.Thomas in 52 AD.The primitive or original church which still subsists was built by St. Francis Xavier himself between the years AD 1542 and AD 1550.Afterwards the Bishops of Cochin constructed a new and more spacious church that was richly endowed with precious ornaments and utensils gifted by the Kings of Portugal. The mortal remains of Christian martyr Devasahayam Pillai were given a Christian burial in front of the high altar of St.Xavier`s church at Kottar in January AD 1752.While being one of the oldest churches in the whole of erstwhile Southern Travancore, it is definitely the oldest Cathedral church of Roman Catholic Diocese of Kottar in the present-day`s Kanyakumari district (of Tamil Nadu) since there are three more dioceses got established here later on.

Very big and historic cathedral. The tomb of St. Devasaghayam Pillai lies here. Also his relic is available. Also historic because St. Francis Xavier visited earlier and celebrated mass on this cathedral.

A roman catholic religious place, a very serene and historical place. This is a church where from St Francis Xavier had carried out his ministry. Another historical aspect of this church is the mortal remain of the fist layman Saint of India Saint Devasahyam is laid to rest. A must place to visit for all Roman Catholics.

Everyone goes to this church irrespective of gender religion and community. It's because of their beliefs. People here maintains the place cleanly. It's a place of silence and meditation except during prayers. It was built in the pre-independence era. The St. Xavier's cathedral can take place in your "not to miss" list of kanniyakumari.

Every year a grand annual festival is during November and December. In that time all religion people will visit this church. That's unity of the Kanyakumari people.

The St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral also St. Xavier Church is a roman catholic latin rite  shrine located at Kottar, Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu state, India. While Saint Xavier was doing missionary work at Kottar and its neighbourhood, he averted an invasion of Vadugas with the help of the army of Paravars and Padaiyatchis of Kottar, at Vadasery, thus protected the people of Venad kingdom from that attack which was appreciated by the king, Unni Kerala Varma, who became closer to the priest and befriended him from then on. In recognition of Xavier’s services, the king allotted him a piece of land to construct a Catholic church, as a gesture of goodwill, as per the church records. There was already a small church, in the same place where St. Xavier’s church stands at present, dedicated to Mary the Mother of God, since AD 1544 . Church records indicate that St. Xavier Church was built in 1600. In 1865, the Shrine of Mary was renovated and enlarged. In 1930, the church was raised to the status of a cathedral. The annual festival is celebrated during November – December, lasting for 10 days.car van bike parking available this place. Thanks my friends.

Fully renovated cathedral. I have been there from my childhood as I belong to the same place. Renovated church gives a fresh feeling. A very calm place where one can sit and pray. Adoration chapel is at the side of the cathedral. Annual feast is generally celebrated during the end of November and first week of December. Tomb of Arulalar. Devasahayam Pillai is located close to the altar of the church. St. Xavier's cathedral is a landmark of Kanyakumari District.

    1. This is the place where St. Francis Xavier had his official residence while working in this zone betwee. 1542 and 1552. The church which has been constructed in Portuguese style, houses also a small chapel from the times of St. Francis Xavier. 2. The ancient church has another speciality: the tomb of Martyr St. Devasahayam, whose mortal remains were buried in front of the main altar of the church. 3. This is the Cathedral of diocese of Kottar.

It's a well maintained church. It contains the mortal remains of Saint Devasahayam Pilla. However, the church seemed to be very deserted on a weekday towards noon. It has a counter to buy mementos and pious articles. 🚻 Restrooms are moderately clean. Unfortunately there was no water supply at the 🚻 when I visited. Be careful about the Google navigation. It shows a wrong route which finally reaches you to a very narrow street that cannot take you to the church. The one-way system near the church is to be watchful. You don't get proper guidance either as road signboard or as navigation direction.
