Just got here in KC and Grünauer was our first place to visit and grab lunch. It definitely exceeded our expectations. We had six people in our party and had no problems getting seated. Atmosphere was super cool being that it looked like a refurbished building. The service was outstanding. Mario was our waiter and explained everything on the menu and offered perfect suggestions to our party. If your looking for exceptionally good German food this is a must have.

We enjoyed our date night here. The service was very good. Megan was our server and she was a delight. The food was very good and reasonably priced. We had nonalcoholic beverages and I definitely recommend looking at that list. The dessert was incredible. We also had soup it was delicious. I’m not even attempting to put the names of these items in this description because they’re very difficult to spell.

Wow! I was in town for a short time with family and we got last minute reservations for dinner. What a cozy, beautiful space! Oh, and the food was delicious! I am primarily vegetarian and had a delicious vegetarian dish. It was so good, everyone in my family tried some and my mom even tried to make a version of it for our Thanksgiving. Can’t recommend this place higher!

What a super nice place to eat while in Kansas City. The food is authentic and delicious. Reservations were easy to make, the service was friendly and fast. The staff is knowledgeable and can make some great recommendations so be please ask if you have a question. They have a great selection of German/Austrian beer and spirits. I recommend the Sulzberger Schnitzel or the Weiner Schnitzel. Expect to pay a little more here but the food is definitely worth it. Having lived in Germany for 12 years and visiting Austria many times, the food here brought back many memories. I will be back. Thank you.

There is handicapped accessible parking as well as other parking available in the back. Very easy to access inside, no steps etc. Just keep your receipt to waive the $20 parking fee. The food here is Amazing!!! I was in European food heaven!! Bread basket was fresh, the bread warm and the crunch of the crust so satisfying. The potatoes were melt in your mouth spectacular and make sure to get a side of spatzle! Mm delicious! The schnitzel was tender. The desserts were just enough without being overly sweet. The sorbet very refreshing after all the rich food. You won't go away hungry here. The staff was very attentive and the atmosphere is an experience in itself, very intimate and relaxed. The wooden beans and brickwork from the old freight warehouse really add to the European feel. The prices - not necessarily a place where you would bring a bunch of kiddos to eat, but a nice getaway for intimate adult meals, where you can relax and chat. There are ways to make it more budget friendly if you don't get any extras, as the entrees themselves are moderate in price.

Great food, but our experience left a bad taste in my mouth. Let me start off by saying the starting service and food was excellent. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and beer pairings. The strip steak was flavorful and the mashed potatoes were delicious without being overpowered by the accoutrements. Try the appetizer salad. It is well mixed with a delightful dressing. The drinks were well made and priced. They have a wide selection of beers and wines, all tastefully selected. But the problem was after our meal, I noticed a price discrepancy and spoke with a nearby waiter. He pointed out it is specifically priced different than the others, with a number next to it. He offered to look at the menu, which he then pulled out several of. They were all missing said number. He said the menus were new, made that day. No apology or any sort of effort was made to rectify the issue. Excellent food. Service however....

My sister and I really loved our lunch here. Having never been before, we were pleasantly surprised with the whole experience. The food was fantastic, and the portions can be quite large! Easily shared on most things. Absolutely a flavor sensation. Our server was knowledgeable, and extremely friendly. She also told us about some awesome places to shop around the area! I really love how beautiful this place is.

A fine dining experience with intriguing German cuisine perfect for date night or ladies night out. The ambiance is one of quiet candlelight. The service is excellent - with posh, knowledgeable wait staff like you see in the movies. And the food? Both exotic and comforting at the same time. Make reservations as far in advance as you can!

Closest Restaurant to Berlin, German food I can find in the states. Great atmosphere and beer list with an even better coctails list. Highly recommend one of the wines from Austria. The schnitzel was outstanding perfektly breaded.

Had the pork belly appetizer, farmers plate entree and cheese strudel. Every step was delicious. Garrett was my server and he was knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful in guiding my dining experience. It was pricy by many peoples' standards, but worth the price in my opinion. I'll definitely return and bring others to enjoy.

We went to Grünauer on a Saturday night for dinner. Got there about 30 mins early but were able to grab a drink at the bar. Service was excellent with great recommendations if you’re not familiar. The Saturday night special was delicious. If you’re there with a group, try to order different entrees because there will be plenty to share.

Had such a great time this afternoon at the bar. Tried three apps two were excellent, one was ok. Chris was a great professional with great recommendations. Very knowledgeable of the menu and mad me feel super welcome. The pate and sausages were excellent. The salmon appetizer needed something. A little more acid would have put it over the top. That is the only thing I wouldn't order again.

Great atmosphere for a nice date out. Food had a nice presentation and was pretty good but most of what we ordered we didn't find amazing. I do recommend getting the cabbage, plus get a side of fresh horseradish with your entree. The bread bowl wasn't worth it for me. I found our server rude and unfriendly, but the hostess staff was wonderful. Parking can get a little tight and limited depending what time it is.

Went here last night for my 5 year anniversary with my wife. We were promptly seated (had a reservation), and served drinks. Appetizer bread basket was a fun experience with delicious freshly baked bread. Entrees were amazing. This is an Austrian restaurant, NOT German. Dessert also incredible. To top it off, our server Mario was excellent.

Absolutely amazing! First time and will definitely be back. Service was excellent. Visited during Restaurant Week, and I had the apricot glazed smoked porkchop with shaved brussel sprouts and mashed sweet potatoes. Butter salad for app and this decadent German pumpkin pancake with cinnamon glaze for dessert. This meal was made for me. Great drinks, too. Best meal out in a very long time.

service was great food was good need to go back a try different menu items. Deserts were fabulous. cant say enough about the ice cream !! I did think the drink price was a bit steep for the size.

We tried four different plates including the Schweinerbraten (a very flavorful roast pork loin with red cabbage and their signature spatzle), the Ungarisches Rindsgulasch (the Hungarian goulash and collective favorite of the evening), the Filet Tournedos Au Poivre (perfectly prepared beef tenderloin medallions, but a tad heavy on pepper), and the Sunday special Stelze.

The service is top-notch/stellar! The servers here do an excellent job, and everyone chips in to make sure that your experience is well worth it. The food is great (more traditional Austrian/German faire), but the German beers are the best. It feels like you are ttansported to an elegant Austrian dining hall. Prost!

The service was exceptional. The pork belly app is delicious. My friend had the burger and I had trout. Everything was great but the house made bread, is house made bread! Can't wait to go back

I've been for dinner and happy hour but after a positively delicious lunch, it was time to give this place 5 stars. They just started doing a 2 course prix fixe for lunch for $17! But of course I wanted something not on the lunch menu. The smoked salmon in buckwheat crêpe was excellent. The goulash (which IS on the lunch menu) is divine. 2 great salads. And a basket of 4 kinds of rolls with butter and quark cheese. Sooooo happy

Authentic Austrian cuisine, with can down to the drinks! Food was delicious, though wish they didn’t serve certain dishes only on certain days of the wk though. Loved their variety of bread they brought out. The atmosphere was amazing! Would go back.

We had the three course lunch meal. $22. Great deal. The salad was tart and tasty with goat cheese and bacon vinaigrette. The braised beef gulasch was delicious and had a mild kick. The schnitzel was juicy and flavorful. The apple strudel and the cheese strudel were the perfect finish to the meal. Beware the strong coffee. Two cups sent me into caffeine overload. I made the reservation via Open Table and noted that one member of the party was celebrating a birthday. There was no mention made of that by the hostess or server.

This is the most authentic German/Austrian food I have tasted. The portion is really good. The servers are very friendly. I came during Christmas time and it was very festive and yet looked really cozy.

We took a weekend getaway in The Crossroads District and ordered takeout through grunauer's website on a Sunday evening for dinner. The process was very seamless and the food was ready exactly as promised by the confirmation email (ordered at 5:30, ready at 6:20pm). All of the food is packaged separately in a way that made sense even separate bags between hot and cold food. We did have to ask for utensils as they were not included in the bag-good thing I checked before heading back to the hotel; but everything else was perfect. We haven't had a lot of experience with German and Austrian food so we found this to be a great experience in terms of sampling a new cuisine. Really enjoyed the UNGARISCHES RINDSGULASCH- a goulash type dish of savory beef stew. Even though we spent around $100 the food will definitely last us a few meals, as the portions are pretty generous. Would not hesitate to recommend when you are in The Crossroads District!

This was the first time both my friend and I had been here and the experience was wonderful! Our waitress, Courtney, was the right amount of attentive. She was knowledgeable, personable, and was able to give great recommendations from the drinks through the dessert. I made sure the manager knew what an asset Courtney is to their business also. My friend and I agree we will definitely be back!

Offers Austrian food with eastern European. I ordered the classic wiener schnitzel pounded veal, breaded and fried with cold potatoes cucumbers salad very nice. Beers selections are great German, Austrian from dark amber to stout. They opened the upstairs area which is usually private dining to provide physical distancing. It's a nice balcony with a fireplace. It's so dark, I couldn't see the menu or my food. Presentation is important too. Service, excellent.

Wow you gotta try the sausage platter. The salad was first and it is not a bag salad. The ingredients were fresh and the dressing was wonderful. The sausages were local made and properly prepared with a sour kraut side that was wonderful. Served with mustard and horseradish washed down with a very good beer.

This was the best dining experience I’ve ever had! Our server, Jason, was great! He was funny and attentive and made the evening fun. The food was phenomenal! I consistently enjoy the prep of the BOH and FOH staff service. Their food always pleasures the palate. Classic pork wiener schnitzel, the cucumber potato salad, sauerkraut and the seasonal specials. Contentment.

Started off our dinner with a stiefel grapefruit radler. My wife had a cocktail pfirsich seeräuber. Both fantastic. We ordered an appetizer with our drinks. The Wammerl is a skewer of nicely sized crispy pork belly & a thick square semolina dumpling served on a bed of salad greens and drizzled with a balsamic shallot sauce. I could have eaten a hundred of these except the were quite large. We hadn't decided on the entrees yet but the appetizers was quite filling so drank a little more and decided on the entrees. I was now getting quite hungry so I went with t e Schweinebraten . It is a Duroc pork loin and belly served with rohtkohl (red cabbage) and spaetzle. Wow. Now I am super full! Huge portion that could easily been shareable. Boy was this tasty. Now I realized I'm on pork protien overload. Must drink more water. My wife was still no very hungry so she v orderd another appetizer of Räucherlachs. It is smoked salmon on top of a creamy cucumber salad with beets horseradish & toast points. We were tempted with the delicous desert menu but we were just plain stuffed. Overall our experience was fantastic. Service was good. Food was good. Price for portion size were very fair. I will definitely be back next time I'm in kc.

The pork tasted amazing and left me wishing I had more. The beef shoulder was not far behind. If you were wanting the best bang for your buck, then this is what you should order. There were two perfectly cooked large slabs of beef that melted in your mouth. I found the red onion confit to be overpoweringly sweet, but the polenta was exceptional!

  • 5/5 Maxim B. 3 years ago on Google
This was such a gem!!! It reminded me of a meal I had in Munich; couldn't believe I was enjoying such amazing cuisine from a spot in KC. I loved the beer, schnitzel was correct, cabbage was proper, coffee was imported from Austria, and the potatoes were like grandma's. Come here for good proper bavarian deliciousness!!! The food was perfection. Bravo!

Sad to do a 1 star rating and really wanted to like Grunauer. Gave it two tries and unfortunately myself and my party became sick with an upset stomach both times. We just went on Friday and still all have upset stomachs on Sunday. It tasted good at the time but not worth the intense intestinal pains for days following.
