Gates is a spot I was satisfied with. Customer service is wonderful the staff is hilarious and fun. As for the food this won't be for everyone, gates sauce is Sriracha based which is fine if you like Sriracha. They do have a sweet and mild sauce that I didn't try, maybe that would make it better. Overall it was fine food with fun people. I say give it a shot.

Gates has always been a favorite of ours, and now that the pandemic has slowed way down it's nice to eat at a sit-down restaurant. Gates has everything you could want or need when it comes to BBQ. We always get our fill at Gates, with some to take home as well. The President is a beast of a meal to feed 7-8 people.

Really good. Loved the fries, the coleslaw is just ok. I would definitely go there again and try more stuff.

Hi May I Help You ??? If you're not from Kansas City that can be a little Surprising. But for those of us who know that's just Gates, Home Town BBQ.

The person taking the order was rude. Menu was confusing and rather restricted. BBQ sauce tasted nothing like any BBQ sauce I've ever had in a bad way. The food was average at best. Burnt end sandwich had a good smoky flavor but the BBQ sauce ruined the flavor. Ribs were fatty and not fresh and had too much seasoning on them. I wish I had gone somewhere else and gotten BBQ that was actually worth it so I was really disappointed with this place.

They literally gave me a sandwich FULL OF FAT and NO MEAT AT ALL. I work hard for my money. Idk if it was that fat white boy with tattoos on his face or if yall just suck but next time Im in KC Im tempted to stop by and go off on yall. Who tf want to eat chopped fat? If you dont have burnt ends tell customers you sold out! I had to throw it away. -STAY AWAY FROM THESE CLOWNS!

Went with a friend to Gates Bar-B-Q for lunch today. We got the all beef Nooner lunch special. SO GOOD! 10 out of 10 would recommend. 3 out of 5 stars. Wouldn't change a thing. #HailNimrod

I grew up with Gates, so for me this is what barbecue should taste like. I admit I miss the KCK location, but the Independence Avenue restaurant is more than worth the extra drive. Plus this one isn’t as dimly lit and the service is better. Honestly I’d come all this way just for the French fries. They’re the standard against which all other fries are judged and found wanting. A strawberry soda rounds things out nicely.

Staff was rude and pushy. Then I got my food paid for it, sat down, then a lady came and said I didn’t pay for it! I had to pull my phone out and show my transaction from Discover!!! The only thing that was really good was the fries, the sauce had so much Cumin in it you couldn’t even taste the meat. Then on top of that they charge you for refills even if you dine in!!! I’m not from KC and not really versed in KC BBQ but this place overall was horrible!

I rolled in late and stopped by this location. The people were super nice. I got the chopped burnt end sandwich....it was good. I'm more a fan of the cubed competition style burnt ends as I think the chopped relies on sauces to carry it...but I digress. It was very did and the sandwich was MASSIVE! I went to Gates 20 years ago and after going back, I won't let 20 yrs go by again without going back. I'll have to try the rest of the menu! The fries and beans were awesome though!

I really like Gates bbq, but I am frustrated they gave me a burnt slap of ribs this trip at $29.95 Unfortunately I didn't ask for a show this time regretful money down the drain. A widow retired woman.

Been going to this place regularly. For 25 years. The food has always been very good. Until the pandemic. They've taken my favorite meal Beef and a half off the menu. And substitute a new beef and a half that's smaller but they are going to bring the original one back after things get better. Prices have not gone up as much as other places. Would still recommend

Gates is really good bbq. Unfortunately, due to health restrictions I can’t eat here often. The sodium count in the sauce is pretty high. But it is oh so good. (Maybe consider a low sodium option)

It was expensive for me, who wanted to experience AS MANY DIFFERENT MEATS as I could. I it lots of leftovers. Got Ribs, Brisket, and Turkey BBQ sandwich? (Bread on bottom), beans and coleslaw. Oops, I did get fries.

I've been to a Gates BBQ restaurant many times. The food is consistently good at all of thier locations. I usually have the sausage and fries crispy with a large strawberry fountain drink. My first time to the 40 highway location in a number of years. It was a little slow on a Monday. The staff is always friendly, and it's entertaining watching someone navigate the menu that hasn't been there before. I do wish they would go back to putting the different sauces back in the serve yourself. It was warm and added to the BBQ. Sauce is a little gritty if you like that. Gates is an excellent example of Kansas City BBQ. If you're visiting or a local Gates is a must. Fix the sauce and I'd rate it a 5.

1st time at a Gates. I loved the ordering process and set up with cooks. Very fast. I got the combo which was way more than I could eat, but wanted try everything. The waitress was awesome including getting my to go box wrapped. Comfortable seating area. I would recommend the hot and spicy BBQ absolutely amazing and food was great just no real wow factor.

If I could give less than one star review, I would. The pork was so fatty you couldn’t take a bite basically raw. Unable to eat any of the food that was served. The service was horrible and staff was incredibly rude.

My friend and I met for lunch at Gates. When placing my order, I asked for a "Pulled pork sandwich" and my friend ordered "Burnt Ends." They put the food on our tray and we paid and went and sat down to eat. When we sat down we were quite confused because the sandwich I had looked like brisket and my friend's Burnt Ends looked like someone put pulled pork in a blender. I brought the sandwiches back to the register to make sure we received the correct food and she assured us that my sliced ham on a bun was their "Pork sandwich" which isn't what I ordered. And that Gates has a "special way of doing Burnt Ends" where they shred it... We reluctantly went back to the table to eat. My friend took two bites of his Burnt Ends, and it was nothing but fat; so he stopped. I took a few bites of my "Pork not pulled pork" sandwich which also tasted extremely fatty and honestly kind of cold then finally gave up as well. A staff member stopped by to ask if we wanted boxes for our two sandwiches that had two bites taken out of them and we said no, because the food wasn't very good. She proceeded to explain to me that Gates doesn't sell "Pulled Pork..." (despite being exactly what I asked for when I ordered) and that their burnt ends are different than most. She tried to get us something different but we declined because the food overall was just really bad, so she proceeded to call us "stubborn" for not letting her help the situation. The fries were the only decent part of the meal. A short while later, I saw the same staff member sit on a chair in the corner of the dining area to take a quick break. She was wearing a glove on her right hand as she wiped off tables and such. While sitting, she proceeded to take off her shoe and massage her foot / adjust her socks with the glove on. After she finished with her feet she proceeded to go back to cleaning tables with the same gloved hand. I'm disgusted by the food and staff and just spent $25.87 only to go home hungry.

Stopped in for lunch with the wife. We each had the sandwich combo with fries. I had the beef and pork sandwich and it was great. Meat was super tender and sauce was delicious. Also love the huge and crispy steak fries. We both left full and very happy we stopped!

Yeah they yell at you when you walk in. They friendly bunch of folks. Had mixed plate. Ribs wasn't as good as 6pm. But was ok. Didn't care for the bbq beans. Reminded me of can beans and they put some type of meat in it? It was hard and burned.. threw it away. Everything was fine.

Great place for great BBQ food. I would highly recommend this place if you are in the area. I got the short end ribs and they were great! The fries are very good but the baked beans are even better!!

Got burnt end sandwich almost all of it was fat no meat . Wanted to try BBQ in KC but that wasn't what I expected from one of the oldest in town .

Definitely was not good. Some of my ribs were pretty burnt. Definitely making it very hard to chew. Unfortunately they ran out of the meat that I wanted. Wind up having to go to another one. Almost got that order wrong until I corrected it. Still a good place to eat. Just looking at this as a hopefully limited bad experience

Best place to eat in the area! Hospitality can't be beat when Sally helps make your dining experience a great one. Super friendly staff. Good prices for GREAT tasting food. A must to try it out. Clean, and service with a smile ..like they really appreciate their customers.

Ordered the burnt ends sandwich, took it off the bun because I don't eat bread. All little pieces, like they just wiped the bits off a cutting board. The small pile on the plate is fat, I gave up digging through the bits, because every bite had fat in it. Coleslaw was good, beans were good, fries were crispy and hubby's sandwich was good. Take away stick with sliced meat.
