Ordered the half chicken, Mac, and thick cut fries. Also ordered burnt ends and ribs. All of it was excellent. Their BBQ sauce is also very good and tasty. I definitely highly recommend this place. We ordered online pickup, and the food was pretty much ready at the time it said it would which was also nice.

Not a Jack, Joe or Gates but Haywards is still KC BBQ royalty. It has legacy, the feel, the look and the blue smoke scent in the air. The Royal sandwich with burnt ends and Onion Rings is a home run and beats the other signature sandwich in KS that seems to have a PR team. Dare ya to compare it and Haywards will be crowned. Love to watch a Chiefs game in Bar area on my next trip.

Love great barbecue and great people!! This is a great spot for both. This is barbecue that is done right! Finger licking good. Shy was fantastic with recommendations from telling us about the menu, going over the local beer choices, and giving us ideas for site seeing. The smoked brisket was, melt in your mouth like butter delicious. The turkey was also amazing. Loved the special hot sauce too! The mushrooms come with a horseradish sauce that makes a great combo.

Excellent bbq! The aroma is great, the atmosphere pleasant and the service was nice. But the food was truly outstanding. We ordered the dinner platter for two and chose ribs, pit ham and brisket for our three meats, and the pit beans and potato salad with egg for our two sides. We both ate until we were full and still each had lunch the next day from the leftovers! With the exception of a couple ribs having some weird connective tissue in them, everything was great. Tender rib meat, flavorful ham, delicious potato salad and beans, and very tasty brisket. I would definitely come back to Hayward’s and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a top notch bbq restaurant.

They still have some of the best burnt ends in town. I’m glad that they expanded their seating and maintained the quality of food.

I stopped in to honor my Dad and brother between job A and job B for a quick bite. This was their favorite BBQ. I had a turkey sandwich and fries. Everything was tasty ; the sauce was really good as well. It was a nice break between jobs. Cozy atmosphere with quick, efficient service. I did notice the sign out front stating they would be moving from this location shortly. New location. Much more spacious. Food was just a good. Service a bit in the slow side.

Allison was my server, 10/10 experience. The most sweetest and personable server I've ever had! Had the 3 meat combo for 2 and got 5 lbs of food for $40. Amazing ribs, brisket, sausage! Ribs 11/10, perfect! Brisket as tender as prime rib and spicy cheddar sausage was prime!

We arrived about 5 min. before 4 today. The Woman behind the bar told us to set where ever we want. She then brought us menu's. And never returned. We sat there as she chatted with the only other customer who was setting at the bar. We never got acknowledged after that. Not drinks ,not anything. After 15 minutes we got up and left . I don't even think she noticed.

This place is an abomination to KC BBQ. If you enjoy bland, soulless, unseasoned food, this is the place for you. I expect to experience joy (or at least some semblance of positive emotion) when eating BBQ. This food left me somewhere between apathetic and irate - not to mention I legitimately thought I might have contracted COVID considering I couldn’t taste anything. The only way this place could be any worse is if they put raisins in the potato salad. If you’re the sort of person who thinks mayo is spicy, this might be the place for you. For everyone else who thinks the culinary art of BBQ should be an emotional and sensory exploration that at minimum leaves you satisfied, save your money and go elsewhere.

The worse brisket I’ve had from a bbq place. I got 16oz of fat. Had zero taste. The worse bbq in town. Thirty years ago great! Now terrible.

I came to this establishment on 8/10 for lunch. The food was just ok, doesn’t live up to the hype and the ribs were really dry. The sides were amazing and that saved the meal, i had smoked bake beans and potato salad. Another saving grace was the fast service. I would give them a second chance and see if it can redeem itself and get a bump in the review.

The service was good and the food was delicious. I had the variety platter with burnt ends, pulled pork and sausage. The burnt ends were from the point/fatty end of the brisket and they were “burnt” with really good bark on them. They were excellent. The sausage was nice and smoky with a great consistency. The pulled pork wasn’t bad either. I also liked the beans! The okra was just okay.

Food was great and we went when they had their $20 for a full slab of ribs! It comes with two pieces of bread as well! Super delicious and fall of the bone ribs! Not dry at all and super tender. Their barbecue sauce is sweet and smoky! Overall loved it! Their burnt end sandwich was great and their fries and tater tots were burning hot! Super fresh ᵕ̈ their coleslaw was refreshing ᵕ̈

Had the Variety Platter and the meat had nice smoke to it. Loved the beans and fries. Overall my main issue was the lack of seasoning if any on the meat. Was expecting some dry rub flavor but didn’t get that.

I have eaten many barbecue places before throughout Kansas City from the sixties to 2024, and I first went to Hayward about three months ago over in Kansas . and as far as barbecue places go Hayward is number one in My books , Kansas City. Missouri used to be the leader of barbecue back in the day . Haywards has shut them down in always. The first meal I had there was the burnt end there beans and coleslaw excellent meal, the next meal I had was the ribs. Dem ribs are so good you don’t even have to eat it with sauce as I heard it said before, ribs are so good you slap someone’s mama in the mouth and I had Ruben sandwich there and the meat is smoked I don’t care for sauerkraut or any kind of sauce you put on it man that sandwich was like 3 inches thick and I had their perfect beans, potato salad and put on a regular sandwich bread because I don’t like a lot of bread I would praise them. They are so good. If I could I will give them 10 stars. The would. It is so nice and peaceful family like and the people that work there are Number one in my book

Haven't been to this location yet but I have been to your establishment when you were in Lenexa a few years ago. I enjoyed the food but may I make a suggestion you shouldn't ridicule a customer like Malcolm for giving a negative review that's his choice. You should professionally take the criticism in stride... apologize for his bad experience and ask for another chance.. you should not insult the customer and blame him for his bad experience and that's what you did.. only a thought. They didn't come up with the expression that "the customer is always right" for nothing because actually they provide your living. I might not give you guys another try because of how you responded to Malcolm. Plenty of other BBQ places in KC wanting individuals business.

Been here many times through my life and always delicious. Some of the better bbq in KC especially when compared to the ridiculous "fine dining" bbq restaurants popping up all over Johnson County that charge twice as much for less flavor and culture. Your professional responses to some of the equally ridiculous poor reviews on here show you all care about your food and reputation, keep it up!

We ordered the shared platter for 2. We chose brisket, burnt ends and ribs. Ribs and burnt ends were phenomenal. Ribs were fall of the bone and burnt ends were juicy with amazing bark.Unfortunately the brisket was inconsistent. Half of it was cold, dry and tough while the other half was hot juicy and tender. Service was great and the atmosphere was awesome. Not a bad place to end up in my opinion!

We ordered takeout after years of wanting to try this place. Ordering online was easy and we were quoted about 30mins on a Friday so that is about as expected. The menu had a variety of options. When I walked through the doors nobody greeted me, but that's not a huge deal. The wait to get the food was only a couple of minutes. The drive home was about 6 minutes. Our order was correct which is always dicey when it comes to take out. However, our food was barely room temperature, the fried pickles were limp, the onion rings were mostly batter, and the cheesy corn was very bland. I tried the beans which were tasty though. The bbq sauce was more like a doctored up ketchup in my opinion and just really not my cup of tea. All in all I won't be back.

I hired Hayward's Pit BBQ as my wedding caterer and couldn't have had a better experience. We had a tasting with Riley and he was very pleasant and easy to work with from the start. Come day of, Riley and his team did fantastic! All of my guests raved about the food, especially the burnt ends. Hayward's also provided plastic wear, utensils, water pitchers, and bussing services. 10/10 recommend them for your next event!

This is a great place to stop and use the bathroom, but I wouldn't eat here again. The water was great and refreshing as long as you add several lemons and filter it through an old rag twice. The pork belly is just thin sliced bacon with syrup baked on, and I'm pretty sure the brisket is a crumbled up Kleenex box.

As a former resident of Kansas City, you know, the first thing I wanted to try on a visit back to the area was some Kansas City BBQ. The last we had was pre-pandemic, and the memory of it had stuck with us all. We arrived about an hour before the dinner rush; the place was quiet, and not many people were dining, which was to be expected. The service was fairly quick, but if we had wanted burgers, we would have gone to MacDonalds. The mushroom side I ordered was if I am being kind, extra crispy. Probably a minute longer in the fryer and I would have said burnt. The burnt ends were not what I could ever compare with what I have had in Kansas City. For what we spent, I expected much better. According to the web search as we approached the area, they had four and a half stars out of five. Sorry guys, the portions were extra small. A ten-year-old could have probably done it justice. Oh, and if you do eat, there do not sit by the windows. The draft coming in from outside does not exactly make for a comfortable meal. The girl that served us was pleasant enough, but she looked like she was scared to death of what the reaction was going to be regarding the food she served. The next time we are in Kansas City, we won't be dining at Haywards, there are way to many others that do much better, and charge much less. Needless to say, we won't be back.

Was a pleasant setting and was helped immediately. However the food portions were small considering the price for 2 entre's were $42.00 with no extras or drinks. Other than that it was very good.

Everything was pretty good. Our waitress was super friendly and went out of her way to get our questions answered. Our favorites were the wings & corn, least favorite was the burnt ends.

Food and service is always great here! Food portions are still kicking as if the pandemic never happened. Most bbq places have cut portions down and increased prices but Haywards has not.
