Historical landmark of Karachi located in Saddar. It was hub and entire public transport intersect this area. Empress market was surrounded by encroachment and recently been restored by court order. Once we entered inside unhygienic environment and it is full of garbage and Flys. Government supposed to restore and renovate like Dera Souq Dubai and open for tourists with souvenir shops, coffee shops and other cultural items.

All food items for home use like all vegetables, all fruits, dry fruits, dates etc. and hand extracted oil has a good wholesale market where you can buy food and essentials All items are available in one place at low cost Until some time ago, this entire market was dominated by the mafia who had sunk the whole market by their own will. But ever since the government has planted grass in this market by cleaning it up and cleaning it up and clearing the front, there has been a different vibrancy in this market. And now people come from far and wide to visit Empress Market and Shopping 🛒 🛍️ here Highlights ♿ Wheelchair Accessibility : Not Available ♿ Wheelchair Entrance : Not Available 🅿️ Vehicle Parking : Available but very congested 💳 Debit/Credit Card : Not Accepted 💂Security Guard : Not Available

The Empress Market was constructed between 1884 and 1889 and was named to commemorate Queen Victoria, Empress of India.[2] The market was constructed at a well-chosen site that was clearly visible from a great distance. The site of the market had historical significance as it was situated on the grounds where a number of native sepoys were executed after the failed 1857 uprising against British rule. Accounts mention that the sepoys had their heads blown off by cannonballs in an attempt to suppress any mutinous feelings among the locals.[3] The British fearing that the local population will build a monument to honor the executed sepoys instead built the Empress Market to commemorate Queen Victoria.[4] The foundation stone of the Empress Market was laid by the-then Governor of Bombay, James Fergusson in 1884, who also laid the foundation of the Merewether Memorial Tower. It was designed by James Strachan (architect), the foundations were completed by the English firm of A.J. Attfield, and the building was constructed by the local firm of 'Mahoomed Niwan and Dulloo Khejoo'. The building was arranged around a courtyard, 130 ft by 100 ft, with four galleries each 46 ft wide. The galleries provided accommodation for 280 shops and stall keepers; at the time of its construction it was one of only seven markets in Karachi.[5] Empress Market is a grand structure in the Indo-Gothic style having vaulted roofs, cusped arches, a 140-foot-high clock tower studded with leopard heads.[6] In 2017, according to the reports in the news media, Karachi citizens' hopes for seeing a badly needed renovation and repair job on this British Raj building were fading away. The previous Governor of Sindh also had ordered the building's renovation when he was in office, but they never materialized.[2] Originally, Empress Market had 280 shops and stalls inside the building. In the year 1954, the KMC increased the number to 405 shops and stalls and also built an additional 1,390 shops and cabins on outside the building.[7]

Empress Market is renewed and it looks amazing. Garden is really maintained in the outside perimeter. Indoor cleanliness and proper setting with pedestrian crossing gives a proper scenic beauty though it is in crowded place. Goods sold inside are of good quality with highly reasonable rates.

Eye opening experience for tourists like me to see how locals get their groceries done on the weekend. Lots of cheap spices, grains and ingredients to buy back as souvenirs. Only advise to go with the local, so you get the cheapest price out of it.

Empress market was built by British raj in the name of queen Victoria ( empress of India). It's construction started in 1884 and completed in 1889. After independence this heritage building was encroached by building illegal structures around it,. After a supreme court order in 2018 the city administration removed all illegal structures and the people can now see this British raj heritage. Apart from seeing its historical Legacy, u can buy best vegetables and dry fruits. I purchased salty peanuts, almonds, stone chocolate and other dry fruitsfrom abbasi store and paapars from grocery store.

Empress Market, located in the heart of Karachi, is a captivating blend of history, culture, and commerce. This ancient marvel, with its stunning Roman architectural influence, has been a pivotal part of Karachi's heritage since its establishment by English rulers in the 17th century. Walking through the grand entrance of Empress Market is like stepping back in time. The ornate archways and intricate detailing on the building's facade are a testament to the architectural genius of the past. Inside, the market is a bustling hub of activity, offering a diverse range of products and experiences. The market is a sensory delight. The vibrant colors of textiles, the aroma of spices wafting through the air, and the calls of vendors selling fresh produce create a lively atmosphere that immerses you in the local culture. You can find everything here, from traditional Pakistani clothing to exotic spices, handicrafts, and more. One of the market's highlights is the friendly and welcoming shopkeepers who are eager to share their knowledge and assist visitors. Bargaining is a common practice, adding to the excitement of shopping here. However, Empress Market is not just about shopping; it's also a historical treasure trove. The market's storied past is palpable as you explore its various sections. The clock tower at the center of the market is a symbol of Karachi and offers panoramic views of the city. Despite its age, the market has managed to adapt to modern times, incorporating modern amenities while preserving its heritage. Renovations have enhanced its appeal, making it a must-visit destination for both tourists and locals. In conclusion, Empress Market is not just a marketplace; it's an enchanting journey through time and culture. Its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant atmosphere make it an integral part of Karachi's identity, and a visit here is an experience that will leave you with lasting memories of this magnificent city.

If you want to have a visit to a place where you not only enjoy the heritage and oldest building but also to go for some groceries, Empress Market is for you then. Let me add this too, that I myself used to order some least famous vegetables of our culture like, broccoli, Iceberg, beets etc. From online stores and it almost cost me double the price that I could easily had here in Empress Market. Apart from veggies, if you're a meat/beef lover, Dry fruits addict or fresh fruits lover you are still welcomed here.

I had the opportunity to visit Empress Market in Karachi and I must say that it is truly a gem of the city. The market is a bustling hub of activity, filled with a diverse range of shops, stalls, and vendors selling all sorts of goods. The vibrant and colorful atmosphere of the market is truly a sight to behold. The market is a feast for the senses, with the aroma of fresh produce, spices, and vegetables wafting through the air. The vendors are friendly and welcoming, and it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of the market as you explore the different stalls. One of the things that I appreciated most about Empress Market was the wide variety of goods on offer. From fresh produce to meats, and everything in between, there was something for everyone. The quality of the goods was also very high, with many of the vendors selling locally sourced and organic products. I highly recommend Empress Market to anyone visiting Karachi. It is an iconic landmark that truly captures the spirit of the city, and is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves to explore local markets and experience the vibrant culture of a city.

Empress market is one of the oldest markets in karachi. Situated within saddar market, Empress is a walled market, with separate rooms for seafood, mutton, beef, chicken and spices etc. Central lawn is there for vegetables stalls and some Plastic goods, etc. It's a well organized market. Some years ago, it was surrounded by heavy encroachment of illegal shops. Which was demolished recently. Although it enhanced the beauty of the main building, but it's actual beauty was it's people and shops there. And which was destroyed. Lots of people suffered. As of last year, it's walls were painted. The thing appears to be more attractive than before.

Empress Market, a landmark of British colonialism. Once this place was famous for daily needs so is at the moment but not same as it was back by 20 or 30 years. Earlier shops were very clean and so was the whole market, similarly not such extraordinary variety of food, vegetable, spices etc. One thing that needs to admire for local Govt. they had done a great job by removing all encroachments. Excellent job. Now you can easily go there, park your vehicle and enjoy.

Empress Market Karachi is a magnificent historical building that showcases the architectural beauty of the British Raj era. The market itself is vibrant and bustling, offering a sensory delight with its colorful stalls and diverse range of products. However, it is unfortunate to see that the building is underutilized, with shops such as meat and dry fruit shops occupying the space. In my opinion, there is immense potential to transform Empress Market into a thriving tourism destination. The government should consider repurposing the space to include shops selling cultural items and souvenirs, creating an attraction for both locals and foreigners. This would not only enhance the market's appeal but also contribute to the promotion of Karachi's rich cultural heritage. It is crucial for the government to pay attention to Empress Market and invest in its improvement. By reviving and revitalizing this historical building, it can become a significant tourist destination, showcasing the city's unique charm and attracting visitors from around the world.

Best place to buy your groceries from and to get the authentic feel of our city. A place with colonial British era construction will mesmerize you if you have any interest in places with historical context and if not still you will buy things at best prices and you can almost get everything for your pantry and it's not there then chances are you won't find it anywhere else in the city either. From parmesan cheese to any of your favourite sauces, herbs and whatever you can think of.

Three years ago, this location was in a deplorable state. However, thanks to a high court order that led to the removal of all illegal stalls and street vendors, it has undergone a remarkable transformation, now presenting itself as an organized and appealing shopping destination. Ever since these changes were implemented, the area has consistently maintained cleanliness and law and order to some extent. It has become a convenient and reliable place to purchase groceries and various household items. While its central location in the heart of the old city makes it easily accessible and bustling with activity, it's worth noting that prices here tend to be slightly on the higher side due to the congestion and demand in this prime location.

Empress market was built in English era in the name of Queen Elizabeth. It was made to facilitate local residents most were English people and armed forces staff at that time. Building was very nicely designed had a big clock tower and grassy parks all around., whole building was made with stone still looks graceful. Shops were inside building and were groceries and fresh items like fish, poultry meat and beaf etc. With time it was captured with unauthorised encroachment and became a mess. All parks were covered with stalls and carts selling enormous items. At this era it had another speciality of hosting pets and animals on its back side. This speciality was more dominant at that time. All legal and illegal pets, wild birds and animals were on sale. In around 2018 government and courts took notice and cleared nearly all market. Demolished all illegal shops and stalls, rearranged parks cleaning building etc. With this mass action Empress market once again came into its original look.

Impress market was constructed to commemorate Queen Victoria .Its origin date backs to 18th century .Commodities sold here range from spices, fruits , meat ,vegetables and pets . The building structure is marvelous,an epic example of British architecture , and can be seen from far away .The displacements of shops and rehabilitation of impress market has increased its beauty as well as decrease the flow of traffic in saddar. Parking space is always an issue here and there are no separate stairs for people with disability. You can find rockery at a very cheap price here . The creation of park is a very nice step by Government and help relax the tired travellers from different parts of karachi. Lets hope Government allocate a fund permenantly to bring back the lost glory of this epic piece of art.
