Dow
Medical
College
(DMC)
has
a
long
and
rich
history
that
dates
back
to
1881
when
it
was
founded
as
a
medical
school
in
Hyderabad
by
Dr.
Homestead.
In
1945,
the
school
was
relocated
to
Karachi
and
was
renamed
Dow
Medical
College
in
honor
of
Sir
Hugh
Dow,
the
Governor
of
Sindh
at
the
time.
The
College
was
initially
affiliated
with
the
University
of
Bombay,
but
after
the
creation
of
Pakistan
in
1947,
it
became
affiliated
with
Sindh
University
at
Karachi.
Later,
in
1951,
it
was
affiliated
with
Karachi
University.
The
College
was
established
with
the
support
of
Dr.
Hemandas
R.
Wadhwani,
the
Minister
of
Public
Health
and
Medicine
of
Sindh
Government,
who
took
a
keen
interest
in
its
establishment.
The
College
was
initially
housed
in
the
old
N.J.V.
High
School
Building
in
Karachi,
and
later,
a
new
building
was
constructed
within
the
premises
of
the
School.
The
Civil
Hospital
was
attached
to
the
College
as
the
teaching
hospital,
and
it
has
remained
affiliated
with
the
hospital
ever
since.
Over
the
years,
the
College
has
undergone
many
additions
and
improvements,
and
today,
it
is
a
full-fledged
institution
offering
both
undergraduate
and
postgraduate
studies.
It
is
one
of
the
largest
medical
institutions
in
Pakistan,
with
all
departments
manned
by
qualified
and
experienced
staff.
In
December
2003,
Dow
University
of
Health
Sciences
(DUHS)
was
established,
and
Dow
Medical
College
became
one
of
its
three
constituent
institutions.
DUHS
is
a
premier
institute
offering
undergraduate
education
in
MBBS
and
BDS,
with
a
strong
emphasis
on
medical,
biomedical
sciences,
public
health,
allied
health
sciences,
and
business
management
programs.
The
University
has
one
main
campus
and
another
sub-campus
located
in
Karachi.
The
School
of
Postgraduate
Studies
at
DUHS
offers
postgraduate
and
doctoral
programs
in
almost
all
academic
disciplines
related
to
the
biomedical
and
health
sciences.
DUHS
also
offers
clinical
diplomas
in
13
specialties,
Masters/MS/MPhil
and
Ph.D.
programs
in
32
different
specialties,
including
Master
of
Advanced
Physiotherapy,
Masters
in
Nursing,
Master
of
Business
Administration,
and
18
specialties
of
the
biomedical
and
basic
sciences
at
the
MPhil
level.
The
flagship
MBBS
program
is
offered
through
Dow
International
Medical
College,
which
caters
to
international
students
or
overseas
sponsored
students.
The
University
is
accredited
by
the
CPSP
for
FCPS
training
in
29
different
specialties.
DUHS
has
17
schools,
colleges,
and
institutes,
including
nine
clinical
entities,
and
25
other
non-academic,
administrative
departments.
The
University
is
known
for
its
exceptional
teaching
and
facilities,
with
many
students
clearing
examinations
of
foreign
countries
and
going
on
to
work
abroad.
The
University
is
also
praised
for
providing
opportunities
for
people
to
access
international
and
modern
level
education.
Overall,
Dow
Medical
College
and
Dow
University
of
Health
Sciences
are
highly
regarded
institutions
in
Pakistan,
offering
world-class
education
and
training
in
the
medical
and
health
sciences.
Although
is
crowded,
and
parking
can
be
a
challenge,
the
quality
of
education
and
facilities
at
the
University
is
top-notch,
and
it
comes
highly
recommended
by
many.
