Amazing castle with some brilliant history. Lovely views over the city. Just a shame, it's not been looked after and not enough information boards.

Great place with lots of history some of it extremally cruel. The Castle is a large Crusader built, as part of their efforts to control the region. It was used as a base for operations against the Muslims. The castle was also used as a prison and a place of refuge for the Crusaders .It has four towers connected by walls that are about 10 meters thick. There are lots of rooms, a great hall, a chapel, and a kitchen. There is also a well inside the castle that provided water for the inhabitants.

A beautiful well-preserved medieval castle with wonderful views in all directions, including the Dead Sea. We visited it in July 2023. We arrived early in the morning, we walked around the castle completely alone as the only visitors, which had its charm. Free parking is possible at GPS 31.182384, 35.703016, a short distance from the entrance. Entry is free with the Jordan Pass. There are toilets in front of the entrance gate, there are no more in the area and there are no refreshments either. The castle area is very large, it is one of the largest Crusader castles in the area. If you want to go through everything, it will take a lot of time and you will sweat a lot. We spent about 1.5 hours at the castle, which was enough to absorb the atmosphere.

Lovely castle situated on the top of a hill providing a great view over the area, not alot of information boards but we had a guide so was still very interesting. Lots of history that dates back to the crusades.

What an absolutely amazing castle, a big bucket list time for myself. The castle is in great shape for how old it is. I did expect more from the castle for something that is included with the Jordan pass. There is an abandoned modern day bath room in the middle of the castle, while you are there you see lots of locked doors (locked even though it is open) some of the door's have even been forced off their hinges and are just laying on the ground. The lights in the tunnels are off or have just been smashed. The more modern reconstruction is falling apart the newer stairs that have lights built into the stairs have been all broken or had the light bulbs stolen. Even though this is an amazing castle to explore we took about 2.5 hours of walking into each and every room, there were still more places to see that were locked behind doors. Looking down into wire coverings you can see massive chambers that there is no access to at all even when the castle is open makes no sense.

Beautiful view from the castle. Some tunnels are so dark and long with multiple rooms. There's a museum too outside the castle. Need to climb up and down a lot. But it's all worth it.

This castle is super cool! I highly suggest you make a stop to visit this castle on your way to Petra. It does not take long to see all of it but you will not be disappointed. There are many interesting features such as barracks, prison cells, quarters for monks and nuns, and latrines and kitchens (though don’t worry, they are not in the same spot!) make sure you print out your Jordan passport to get a discount!

The castle itself is beautiful and included in Jordan pass. Definitely worth visiting. I would give it 5*, however there was one catch for which I take 1* down. At the entrance we got a guide, who was really nice and guided us around the castle, which took approximately 20 - 25 minutes. I was expecting that I would give him some money, but in the end he demanded 10 - 12 dinars, we had just dollars and the end was a bit embarrassing. If there would be a clear statement in the beginning - I offer you guiding, it will take 25 minutes and it costs 12 dinars, then I would be completely fine with it. But we didn't have much choice and he started guiding us even without asking.

Impressive medieval castle first constructed in 1140. If you’re a crusade, middle east or Saladin history buff you’ll love this place. Large and well preserved, lots of wandering to be done. Surrounded by excellent tourist restaurants in a brilliant old town. If you have the time enjoy a wander around this super hilly medieval town. Was quite a big detour on my way from the Dead Sea to Petra.

The castle was built in the mid 12th century by the crusaders to defend against Muslim attacks. It has been nicely preserved and undergoes constant restoration.

Worth a visit? Yes. A must see? Not so sure. I wouldn’t make a special trip just for this place. But okay to visit if passing by the area. It’s located at a strategically important spot historically.

Worth visiting it, don't expect is very well maintained, but is quite a big construction with many underground rooms.

Great place to visit. Free with the Jordan pass. Parking was an issue and the restaurant was out of most food at 1.30pm so ensure you travel accordingly. A relief from the sun in the inner rooms underground. Quite windy as it's high up. If taking kids make sure they don't run off as you can get lost. Photos illustrate this.

Visiting Karak Castle was like stepping back in time. The vast, ancient walls and the breathtaking views from the top were awe-inspiring. Wandering through the maze of rooms and passageways felt like a real adventure, although I wished there were more signs to explain the rich history. It's a bit of a climb, so good shoes are a must. Be wary of the tour guides near the entrance; while informative, they can be pricey. Overall, it's a captivating place that's definitely worth a visit, especially for those fascinated by medieval history.

Nice view from the top. But this is just castle ruins, if I have no extra time I wouldn't rush to go there.

Amazing to see this castle. The views are incredible of the surrounding landscape. The sheer determination in building this castle such a long time ago with limited tools is astounding. So much history here of battles and wars. The surrounding area has plenty of shops and restaurants. Parking is not easy at busy times. Not much else to once you’ve walked around for a few minutes and taken your pics. I was in and out within an hour.

I enjoyed the visit to this historic castle. I'm always amazed how daily life happens when there is no modern conveniences. This castle has protected people's for thousands of years and still stands today.

An amazing medieval castle dating back over a thousand years. Still very well preserved, with some great views. Be warned, there are lots of steps! But we'll worth it. Also a museum about the history of the castle, very interesting. Entry fee 2 JoD, but also part of the Jordan pass scheme.

Nice example of a crusade castle that has been relatively well maintained. Lonely Planet says that there are information boards, but there aren't, the map in the guidebook isn't very helpful either.

Discovering this place as much as it's so exciting it is so dangerous and it has to be done with a guide tour. The alleys and hallways are so narrow & all most the same it has an underground hallways. I enjoyed the views the way of building the castle to protect the soldier whether it was the windows or the exterior walls and the surrounding of the castle.

The castle gives a very good sense of how great builders the crusaders were! The castle is partly demolished but the tunnels and underground rooms remaining are impressive! You can literally spend hours wandering the different areas, uncover an hidden staircase that gets you to the next level or a dark room. Our kids (11,13,15) had a lot of fun discovering the castle and were frustrated when we left after 2,5 hours. This is the first time they had fun during a castle visit.

Interesting, especially with a guide who knows its history. A lot of steps, though, so keep that in mind particularly if you're visiting the castle after a day trip in Petra.

Amazing medieval ruins with a long history that you can explore completely on your own. No extras, you can have the pure historical effect and create stories about crusaders or Saladin's troops in your head.

Great castle and views. Difficult to leave castle when driving yourself, many one way streets. Don’t use google maps to find your way it will get you lost completely. 🤣🤣

Aust visit on your trip to karak. The castle has alot of crusader and Islamic history. It has alot to do with history of salah Ed din ayubi if you are a fan. Also the views are pretty amazing. It's well preserved you can also have a guided tour for about 15 jd which i would totally recommend to enjoy the full experience otherwise you are just seeing some empty old walls. The place is also very close to the supposed grave of prophet NOAH (PBUH). Also on your visit to karak you can go to wadi bin hammad on the way back which is a decent hike with beautiful views

The caste is beautiful!!! When we got to the close to the caste. Front of Pomergranate restaurant somebody offered us a seemingly free parking space. When we wanted to leave, he wouldn't let us go, just for consumption. ROBBERY!

Included in Jordan Pass, otherwise 2JD. Large Castle area with many passageways and hidden rooms. Not a lot of signage so best to read up on the area before arriving. Didn’t feel it was a “must see” but definitely worth a bathroom break (they even had TP!) and a quick 30 minute tour around the ruins. Read on other reviews that parking was 3JD, but we didn’t find it. Be warned - All shop/restaurant owners offer “free” parking in front but expect you to buy something.

We had no real expectations. Huge castle with an amazing view and a very remnants of various periods. A little more historical information on the location itself would have been appreciated.

Beautiful old roman Fort with plenty to walk around, would recommend going with a guide as there's no signage. Toilets on site too. Definitely worth a visit.

2nd Largest fort in the world as per Guide in Karake. It is a Big Castle, It was Built in 1000BC or 1100BC somewhere . Later , It was conquer by Sultan Salluddin Ayoubi and till then it remain under different Muslims Government. It has 7 Floors ,it is located on the top of the Mountain. Inside the Castle, it has Shopping Center Storage Place, A Mosque, Church, Court Building , Administration Block, Jail, Meeting Rooms. Etc. You will find many hidden ways their as well. Till 1963 People Lived in that castle, Later Jordon Govt restore and dedicate it for Tourism purpose. You need atleast 4 to 5 hours to see this castle. Car Parking is available there on 1 or 3 JD. Castle tkt is 3 Jd for foreigners.

The castle was a bit ruined, as it was poorly preserved. Most rooms were dark and decayed. Better prepare a flashlight in advance. There was a local guiding us since we passed the ticket office. He made a phone call at first but required us to follow him. We thought he belonged to the AlKarak office but he was actually a tour guide that intended to ask 20 jd. Be aware of the ‘volunteer’ nearby.

It's a great crusader castle and it's a nice stop along the King's Highway but you can really compare it to other other major Jordanian destinations such as Petra or the Dead Sea. We finished exploring in 1 hour time

This place is magical. If you want to see how the templers knights lived this is the place to visit. It is a big fortress on 7 stories! To get here is easy and the entrance fee is not so big (I don't remember, look online) If you get to Jordan this place is a must.

Amazing huge, almost intact castle. We visited on a cold and rainy day so that perhaps coloured our score. The site is slowly falling in to ruin although you can tell that at some point some money has been spent on renovations. However the sheer size of the site would no doubt make it very expensive to do more to. Worth a visit for a couple of hours.

  • 3/5 Joshua S. 1 year ago on Google
A pretty well intact castle with good views of the surrounding area. Included in the j pass and on the way to many other attractions. Has informative museum with some cool artifacts. This is the only place where I really felt like there were scammers all around. 3 jod parking at the “kerak castle parking lot”, cmon that more than the ticket. Also, beware of all the dudes trying to flag you down and park at their restaurant or try the local hospitality. The best place is to find street parking and dont pay anyone.

  • 2/5 Wade W. 2 years ago on Google
More impressive from the outside than inside. Little to no information about castle history inside the castle. Parts of castle were rebuilt, others have been in the same derelict state for decades. Costs 2JOD and is included in Jordan Pass. Worth visiting just for the views of the valley.

  • 5/5 Brent S. 1 year ago on Google
I love castles so when I got to see this one I was in heaven. Not wheelchair friendly, bathrooms outside before you get tickets, views are fantastic, lots to explore. I was on a G-Tour so the price was included.

  • 4/5 Jewel R. 1 year ago on Google
So high and quite big, no doubt it was a formidable castle. Included in Jordan Pass and car parking lots you have to pay JD3.00 to park but if you eat at their attached restaurant the fees is waived and food is good and priced reasonably.

  • 5/5 Felicity C. 1 year ago on Google
Very nice ancient ruins of the castle, well set up for visitors. You can buy tickets at the entrance. There are guides outside if you wish to take a guide at the cost of 20 JOD. There are great traditional eating places close by for a good lunch. They have bathroom facilities at the entrance. There is a museum as well included in the cost of your ticket.

Fantastic castle overlooking the Valley… one of largest castle’s in Middle East. Very well preserved and very historical. Please try taking a tour guide to enjoy it fully…

  • 4/5 Kata P. 2 years ago on Google
From history prospective is amazing. However there is nothing there ,not even a sign or any text about the parts of the castle. The view is stunning. But not sure If I'd stop again.

👍👍 A beautiful place to honour Nabi Nuh ‏عليه السلام ❤️ Mashallah it was hard to find this place and many don’t believe it to be here, as there are no signs and it’s on top of a mountain. There is a whole grave yard beside it
