Petra (Arabic: ٱلْبَتْرَاء‎, romanized: Al-Batrāʾ; Ancient Greek: Πέτρα, "Rock"), originally known to its inhabitants in as Raqmu or Raqēmō (𐢚𐢛𐢓𐢈)[3][4], is a historic and archaeological city in southern Jordan. Petra lies around Jabal Al-Madbah in a basin surrounded by mountains which form the eastern flank of the Arabah valley that runs from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba.[5] The area around Petra has been inhabited from as early as 7000 BC,[6] and the Nabataeans might have settled in what would become the capital city of their kingdom, as early as the 4th century BC.[7] However, archaeological work has only discovered evidence of Nabataean presence dating back to the second century BC,[8] by which time Petra had become their capital.[6] The Nabataeans were nomadic Arabs who invested in Petra's proximity to the trade routes by establishing it as a major regional trading hub. Fascinating place with such an interesting history behind it. Well worth going , makes a huge difference if you have a good tour guide to provide you with the historical information as you go. The way they have excavated the ruins and then showed the additions is great. Helps give "you" a much better inside to how it once looked. Take plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially on a hot day. There is a gift shop and restaurant at the bottom as well as restrooms.

One of my favorite National Park in Israel. No trip to Israel is complete without visiting this place. It is filled with so much history with a breathtaking view of the Dead Sea. The best time to visit is sunrise. This is a place that is usually very busy on weekends so it is advisable to schedule your arrival during the week. There are a few ways to get up: 1. Snake path - This is the long path up to the mountain. •Length: The route climbs to a height of 350 meters, and is 2.7 Km long. •Opens for ascent every day one hour before Sunrise and closes for descent one hour before closing time. •On very hot days the Snake Path ascent closes at 09:00AM and the descent closes at 10:00AM. When heat is extreme, the Snake Path ascent closes at 08:00 and the decent closes at 09:00. The descent via the Roman Ramp is open as usual. 2. The Roman ramp path - This is the short path. Starting point: West entrance. •Length: 0.7 Kilometers 3. Cable car - A round trip by cable car will cost 23$. • You need to make a reservation! •Starts working at 8AM!

Ruins of a Dynasty, ruined by a greedy Kingdom. The great efforts of the excavation team brink back the lifestyle and architecture before 3000 years. Need full-day to go round, better to have a guide. Most importantly, do not visit during summer. Best to visit in winter.

What more could you ask for? I mean air conditioning the ruins would be nice cause it was ridiculously hot when we were there 52°C. All joking aside, this park is worth every shekel. I highly encourage the morning walk up the snake path. It’s not for the faint of heart but it is worth it. Anything worth doing takes effort!

Visiting Masada National Park was an awe-inspiring experience that left me deeply moved by the rich history and breathtaking views. One of the highlights was witnessing the awe-inspiring sunrise from the fortress walls. The vibrant colors dancing across the Dead Sea, coupled with the peaceful silence of the desert, created a truly magical atmosphere. It was a moment that will forever be etched in my memory. Exploring the site, we marveled at the well-preserved structures, including the ancient synagogue, bathhouses, and the imposing palaces. The views from the summit were simply breathtaking, offering a breathtaking panorama of the desert landscape and the Dead Sea in the distance. Masada National Park’s commitment to preservation and conservation is evident throughout. The efforts to protect and restore this historical gem are commendable, allowing visitors to step back in time and appreciate the remarkable heritage that unfolds within these ancient walls. I highly recommend visiting Masada National Park to anyone with an interest in history, nature, or simply seeking a unique and memorable experience. The combination of historical significance, stunning landscapes, and a well-organized visitor experience make it a must-see destination. A trip to Masada National Park is an unforgettable journey that will leave you with a profound appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit and the natural beauty of the Israeli desert. Don’t miss this gem on your travels!

The ancient city of Petra is a famous archaeological site in Jordan’s southwestern desert. Petra is famous for its tombs, temples, churches and houses which are all carved into pink sandstone cliffs; earning its nickname, the “Rose City”. It’s Jordan’s most-visited attraction and part of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Established around 300 BC and only discovered by the western world in 1812. The indigenous people (Bedouin) of Petra were nomadic Arabs who used this city as a major trading hub. Petra became an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. The last indigenous Arabs slowly left Petra as the site became incredibly popular for thousands of tourists. I stayed at Petra Gate Hotel in the small town of Wadi Musa which is just a few 100 metres away from the entrance of Petra. The hotel also offer lunch packages which you can bring with you to Petra. Very convenient as the restaurants inside Petra are touristy expensive. I only had 1 day for Petra which is way too short for this enormous site. Be prepared to walk and climb a lot if you want to get the most out of Petra. I had to squeeze everything into 1 day and doing so I ended up making 25 km to see the highlights of Petra. If you have more time I would advice to buy a multi-day ticket. Let me guide you through the fascinating world of Petra.

Visiting this attraction formed part of the Masada and Dead Sea day trip we went on with Being Harim. The route out was interesting as you travelled along the dead sea. It was interesting seeing the sinkholes on our way there. We got the cable car up to site and then walked round some of the ruins and rebuilds. The tour guide was good and snappy through the relevant bits. It was fascinating learning the significance of this place to King Herod. However, it is mainly ruins and was a good way to fill out the day to the dead sea, hut maybe not a necessity

One of the most impressive sites I’ve ever visited. Tons of history behind this. Quick ascent to the top by gondola. Stunning views from above. Spent a couple of hours at the top exploring the different structures and stories behind them.

Lovely place. Access is comfortable. Easy walk between the sites and good explanation on the sign near each of them. Very clean. But also it is a very popular tourist site there is only explanation in Hebrew and English. Also there is time when they close the snake path at the top ( maybe because the hot temp) but not at the bottom so people can be walk to the top and stack on the end, and people that go to the top by the path can't go back, and have to use the cable train, and pay for it.

We arrived at 5am for a sunrise hike. It took about 45min to get to the top of the snake trail walking at a brisk pace. It was 100% worth the early wake up to experience the sunrise. There is a lot to see as well once you get to the top so make sure to take a look around. They have a water fountain at the top to refill bottles.

A place where culture meets terrible history. Visiting the ruins was great and our guide made a very good job describing the atmosphere at the time. To get there you can either take the switch back trail, also called the Snake Path, or, if you don't feel like walking up, gondolas are available to get to the top. We took the gondolas as after you get up there you still have quite a bit of walking to do the tour itself. Most of the ruins were rebuilt in part due to the battle that raged there between the Romans and the Jews. The saddest part for me was the global suicide of the Jews to set them free from the siege to avoid to be enslaved again from the Romans as they were losing the battle. Very emotional city.

A fantastic place 👍 What a work making this place. The story of the Jewish choosing freedom instead of slavery.. Walking 🚶‍♀️ around and saw the water system 😊👍 the water was coming from the mountain ⛰ to see the bathroom, the living room and the food storage. You have a synagogue 🕍 but also a church ⛪ from the Byzantine period.. To come to the castle, you can walk up. It's a beautiful walk you need water 💧 or you can take the cable car, and you still need water 💧 at the top you can refill your water bottle..

Masada National Park in Israel is a historic marvel that holds tales of bravery and resilience. The rugged desert setting showcases the remains of Herod's palace and the fortress where Jewish rebels made their stand against Roman forces. The steep hike or cable car ride to the top rewards with breathtaking views of the Dead Sea and surrounding landscapes. The site's significance and well-preserved ruins offer a poignant insight into ancient history. Masada stands as a testament to the human spirit, making it an essential stop for history enthusiasts and travelers seeking a deeper understanding of Israel's past.

Masada has deep historical roots. The preservation of this site is absolutely amazing. You take a cable car to the top, so many who don't love heights may find Masada a little much. I am not a fan of heights, but it was worth it. The views from the top of Masada have a great view of the Dead Sea.

One of the best national sites in Israel. Its a must for every person who likes history/nature/outdoor activities! Book your entrance (very recommended to come from the west side so you don't have to walk a lot). Also its best known for the very special sun rise that can be seen from there over the Jordanian mountains and the dead sea! Not very expensive and very clean and well organized. Again, A MUST.

Going in the winter is great because the sun isn't as strong so you can walk the top freely without completely dehydrating. Also the flora and fauna are beautiful at this time of year (February/March). Of course the archeological finds are amazing too 😁

Masada is one of the obligatory trips when people come to Israel. And it can get super hot. We were lucky enough to go when there were a few clouds in the sky and the heat wasn’t super oppressive. It was only 82° F. Masada is rich in history and stories of strength and tragedy. If you’re lucky enough to get a great tour guide, it will make the trip even better.

Great place, strong and beautiful story behind it. I went up at dawn by bus and came down walking and it was one of the most fulfilling experiences I had in Israel. Watching the sun rise at the very top, meditating and lifting some prayers was breathtaking. On top of that listening to the story was quite an experience. This is a must visit if in Israel that I highly recommend.

Pictures do not do Petra justice. It is utterly magnificent, a sprawling city carved from stone. It’s much larger, grander and more elaborate than any photo, and is well worth seeing in person.

(Translated by Google) I don't know who, but we flew to Jordan for the sake of Petra and the Wadi Rum desert. Petra is beauty and delight, uniqueness and mystery. We were in early May. The heat is incredible. Therefore, I would advise to go here in winter. One day is too little for Petra. I suppose that you can get around all the corners if you come at 6 am and leave at 6 pm. We only had 5-6 hours of time. We managed to reach the restaurant. If we had been in reserve for another hour and a half, we would have reached the monastery. We didn't climb into caves or churches, we didn't climb the canyons - there was no time. In principle, walking is not very tiring, I thought it would be harder. A headdress, comfortable sneakers, water are required. A day is enough for a quick inspection, for a more detailed one you need a couple of days.

(Translated by Google) Where I am? Petra Jordan Historical site Volodymyr Prudnikov 5358 points month ago Petra is an ancient city, in the past the capital of the Nabataean kingdom, now the most popular tourist attraction in Jordan, one of the seven modern wonders of the world. In Petra we got from the Egyptian city of Taba, first by boat across the bay to Aqaba, and then by tourist bus. drove through the desert where from time to time we met lonely trees and Bedouin tents. From the place where we were dropped off the bus, we walked for another 20 minutes, this distance could also be covered by a camel, or by carriage. Walking along the canyon we were looking forward to meeting with this extraordinary city about which we read a lot and watched broadcasts. After passing a rather narrow gorge, we opened our mouths to a stunning view that suddenly opened before us. Before us was the main temple of Petra El-Khazne. It is perfectly preserved, although it was built in the first century. We spent a long time examining the temple, admiring the talent of the people who skillfully cut it out in the rock. Petra occupies a fairly large territory, where you can see the amphitheater, the legacy colonnades Romans, crypts, monastery. For entertainment you can ride a camel, buy a local souvenir, take pictures with a beautiful background. Petra is really beautiful and although the path to her is not close, it's worth it. The views from up there are amazing, you can sea the Dead Sea, the desert, the mountains and also the ancient Roman camps and the ramp they built to vanquish this marvelous fortress, built by Herode the Great.

One of the most amazing places not only in Jordan but on Earth! It's a big place with many hiking trails. Don't expect to do it in one day, for sure. A trip from Amman takes 3 hours (240km, 70% of a charge if you drive Tesla). There are many hotels in town to stay overnight. Marriott is equipped with complimentary charger for your electric car.

Petra established possibly as early as 312 BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan, as well as Jordan's most-visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah (identified by some as the biblical Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. It is believed that Petra was home to roughly 30,000 people and was abandoned in the year 106 A.D. Site has been a UNESCO World Heritage since 1985. Petra area is something like 3000 - 3500 ft. above sea level. HOT during summer months. February till April should be OK, later the weather turns unpredictable (Dusty), not healthy & not good for photography either. September till November should also be OK. Hints for Photographers: 1-UV filter is recommended as to protect lens from dust & to reduce high UV level affecting exposures. 2- Wide angle lens is also recommended as some places are tight. If you have a DSLR camera then you may need a 12 - 24 mm lens. There will be much walking on the sand, tour may take several hours....It is worth it.

Very historic place. About 1000 Jews took refuge here against Roman legion and ultimately sacrificed their lives. Remnants remind you of very sad and gruesome past. Lots of tour operators play on this route. It was extremely pleasant in late December so at least that time of the year is recommended. Nice little museum greets you at the entrance and there a large engraved map of the site. You can reach the top by either rope way or on foot. If you are fit and willing, foot approach is recommended. It's not steep or very long, so younger and middle aged must give it a thought. Ruins at the top are well preserved and well sign posted. Since the top is not covered, it must be getting very hot in summer. You can see a part of Dead Sea from this monument and a lot more. But the overall area as far as you can see is barren with exception of few date plantations, which hopefully will progressively come closure. All in all I felt it very emotional attraction and I recommend it as a must.

I just heard about it when I was small in Church during my youth. Heard about it when they preached it. Now, I have seen it with my own eyes. So so wonderful. Loved to go back there when the upgrades has completed. Right all the way from the Fiji Island.

Masada national park is a archeological wonder and UNESCO heritage site. On seeing the structures one can feel and understand the life of people who lived during that Era. Masada is of high significance in Jewish history where the rebels stayed there and fought against the Romans. We reached the Masada Park by cable car, of course you can make to the top by trekking early in the morning. We were amazed by the northern palace which has three terraces. You can see the remains of the rebel dwellings, swimming pool, water system, food storage cell, mosaic walls, watch tower, ritual bath place etc... the view is stunning. A must visit place. It takes some 3 -4 hrs to completely visit the park. They have drinking water at the entrance, few sheds to rest while walking. Try to visit the museum before entering the park. And there will a short movie about the history of masada national park. You have to park the car at -1 and reach 1 floor for tickets.

Notice Attention THIS TOUR WAS CARRIED OUT IN THE Pre COVID PERIOD ################### UNESCO World Heritage Site If you make a trip to Israel you cannot miss a visit to the Masada fortress. The fortress is located on a rocky plateau overlooking the dead sea and from which you can enjoy a magnificent view. I recommend taking a guided tour to get the most out of the site and learn about the fascinating history of the site and the historic siege. During the summer, temperatures are very high and it is preferable to visit in the early morning or late afternoon. #################### On an isolated clifftop in the heart of the desert, a lofty plateau overlooking the Dead Sea and the untamed landscape of the Judean Desert, there once stood a magnificent palace. ###################### Masada (Hebrew: מצדה‎ metsada, "fortress") is an ancient fortification in the Southern District of Israel situated on top of an isolated rock plateau, akin to a mesa. It is located on the eastern edge of the Judaean Desert, overlooking the Dead Sea 20 km (12 mi) east of Arad.

Climbing the Masada was one of the most amazing experiences, what we did was we use the cable cars to go up and we were able to see some of the most amazing sites in Israel. Make sure you bring a lot of water bottles with you and some snacks because the climate could be very dehydrating. They had a small shop where you can buy souvenirs and very informative with all the explanations of the sites

Nice place. Rope 🪢 Ride or Cab is a good thing else to step up the fortress takes nearly 2 and half hour. I thought to visit the whole fortress takes a complete day. Any way I planned this with the dead sea that is also awesome 😎.

Of all the stops I've made on my 10 day trip to Israel thus far, I think that the Masada National Park has been a standout experience. Everything about this location is fascinating to me, from the history shared through stories, the picturesque scenery with the Dead Sea and Jordan in the distance, to the clear archeological relevance of this site (and including the research center that studies living in harsh conditions). This National Park is, to me, definitely worth taking the time to visit!!

Great national park to learn about the history of Masada! You can either hike up or take the cable car to the top from the visitor center. Signed placards around the area tell you about the history. There’s also a museum on the premises to learn even more. Also a gift shop and food in the visitor center. Very cool visit!

Great Place. Medium well prepared ruins but overall nice, because the story behind them makes it even more exciting. The best are the views which are immaculate. The one con is the price. For 22$ it's still worth it, but you feel a bit ripped off. For me a price of 15$ would be more reasonable.

Masada is unmissable - a trip to southern Israel is incomplete without it! Both Boasting Herod the Great's military and cultural achievements and the last stand of the zealots, Masada is a monument to tragedy. To get a real feel for the mountain, hike up from the base - either the long, snake pass on the east, or the less accessible Roman rampart on the west. Atop are ancient dining and living rooms with amazing Dead Sea views, and many military accoutrements (such as the central watchtower and Eastern gate), along with store houses, public baths, and a library. Dig into the history and culture of Masada to appreciate it.

Visiting Petra was a dream, it's a good long walk wear comfy shoes, one can hire horse ride to the treasury but it's beautiful to experience the walk, it can rain any season so be prepared, there are three trails so plan your day according, recommend you start early morming, all three trails are a beautiful scenic hike, must visit is monastery for awesome view points and photos, one needs minimum 2 days to complete the visit, you can buy two days ticket in advance as a combo hence do your research well, food and water is available inside but is very expensive...good place to buy souvenirs, you can bargain to get a good deal

An archaeological site having great historical significance. Spellbinding and astonishing. Unbelievably beautiful stone carving. One is surprised to see the structures crafted from the rocks. People living there thousand of years ago had amazing abilities. A must visit site if you have interest is knowing about the ancient civilizations of the world.

A guide is recommended. Ours was informative and insightful. There is so much to take in. Lots of history and visual interests. The stone carvings are amazing with sculptured detail that withstands the test of time. Visit the site during cool temperatures. It was 115 during our visit. Bring lots of water. Visit the restaurant and take a break. Lots of opportunities to ride a horse, donkey or camel to the sites if you get tired. This site is famous for movie sets. The visit is worth the trip. Plan on hiking for at least 14 miles. Wear comfortable footwear. Bring snacks to refill your energy during the hike. Jordan is the holy land with beautiful people, culture and good food.

The “Rose-red City,” capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, famous for the tombs and temples carved into its sandstone cliffs. The nomadic Nabataean people settled in the desert mountains of present-day southern Jordan more than 10,000 years ago, founding a settlement, Raqmu, that was to become a trading center for the region. Trade with the Greek and Roman empires brought prosperity, and the growing city became known as Petra, Greek for “stone.” Carved into the rock. Petra’s location in steep-sided mountain gorges led the Nabataeans to develop a distinctive architecture, carving tombs and temples that mimicked the Greco-Roman Classical style but also included some characteristically Nabataean elements. The finest examples of this are the famous Al-Khazneh (“the Treasury,” although it is in fact a mausoleum) at the entrance to the city and the Monastery, Al-Deir (actually a hilltop temple). Also of note is the row of four Royal Tombs—the Tomb of Urns, Silk Tomb, Corinthian Tomb, and Palace Tomb—each featuring a different Classical genre. The city also has a huge theater hewn from the rock and a small number of free-standing buildings, such as the Qasr-al-Bint, the main temple of the city. Several of the soft sandstone buildings have suffered from erosion, and even in the best preserved ones the details have lost clarity.

(Translated by Google) Pétra (from πέτρα petra, “rock” in ancient Greek; البتراء Al-Butrāʾ in Arabic), from its Semitic name Reqem or Raqmu (“the Bariolea”), is a Nabataean city located in the south of present-day Jordan. It is the major tourist pole of this country. Created in Antiquity, towards the end of the 8th century BC. AD, by the Edomites, it was then occupied around the sixth century BC. AD by the Nabataeans who made it prosper thanks to its position on the caravan route transporting incense, spices and other precious products between southern Arabia, Egypt, Syria and the Mediterranean . By the 7th century, the modification of trade routes and earthquakes led to the gradual abandonment of the city. Petra sheltered at its peak up to 25,000 inhabitants. Fallen into oblivion in modern times, the site was rediscovered in 1812 by the Western world thanks to the Swiss explorer Jean Louis Burckhardt. The many buildings, whose monumental facades were directly carved into the rock, make it a unique ensemble which has been inscribed, since December 6, 1985, on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The area around the site has also been a national archaeological park since 1993. Erosion, rains and tourism - in constant progression since the end of the twentieth century - are however a threat to the preservation of the site and actions are being taken to stop the destruction of the monuments.

Masada (Hebrew: מצדה‎ metsada, "fortress")[1] is an ancient fortification in the Southern District of Israel situated on top of an isolated rock plateau, akin to a mesa. It is located on the eastern edge of the Judaean Desert, overlooking the Dead Sea 20 km (12 mi) east of Arad. Herod the Great built two palaces for himself on the mountain and fortified Masada between 37 and 31 BCE. According to Josephus, the siege of Masada by Roman troops from 73 to 74 CE, at the end of the First Jewish–Roman War, ended in the mass suicide of the 960 Sicarii rebels who were hiding there. Masada is one of Israel's most popular tourist attractions.[2] During 2005 to 2007 and 2009 to 2012, it was the second-most popular, behind the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo. The site attracts around 750,000 visitors a year.[3]

(Translated by Google) The last stronghold of the great revolt of the Romans. You can reach the top on foot via the eastern "Snake Trail" (by car: Road 90, near the "Bar Yehuda" landing), the western "Battery" trail (by car: Road 3199 comes from Arad) or by cable car. Search keywords for those interested: Herod, the destruction of the Second Temple, the Great Revolt, Sikriim, Elazar ben Yair, Yosef ben Matityahu, the Tenth Legion, the Roman siege system, the myth of Masada (did mass suicide occur?), "Again Masada will not fall", Masada - National Park (1968) , Masada - World Heritage Site (2001). See pictures: Tristramaic - a songbird from the starling family. It was first called "Dead Sea Starling" by Simon Bodenheimer, due to the area in which it is located. It was later decided to name it after the English priest Henry Tristram, who explored the Land of Israel and captured Tristram in 1864 near Mr. Saba Monastery in the Kidron Valley. Its name in English and Arabic is similar. Earlier, the monks called it an "orange-winged release." Enthusiastic about human food scraps, and loves bamba especially from snacks, is almost unafraid of humans and sometimes even dares to eat from their palms, which attracts the attention of tourists and visitors to the Judean and Dead Sea areas.

Masada is a very impressive historical site by the Dead Sea. Built as King Herod's Summer palace, it became a fortress during the uprising against Rome. There are lots of lessons to be learned from the story of this place.

It's a mile up if you go by foot and when you get to the top? It's a great experience. The 'park', or at least the section I went to was more of a ancient ruins which was fun in itself and very nice to look at. The view down is also very appealing and goes on forever if you stare long enough. Within the site itself was a nifty little store that sold all kind of trinkets and the like and had a less then 'mile by foot' way to get down the mountain. Everything was clean, staff was friendly, and it was just an enjoyable visit all around!

(Translated by Google) An amazing place with an impressive history. The place is far from settlements but well worth a visit, there are many ancient buildings and the wonderful view of the Judean Desert and the Dead Sea can be seen from all sides. The ascent to the place is via trails or cable car, I ascended and descended through the trails, and it is a great experience to walk on them and watch the landscapes of the area. There are also all kinds of animals in the area, like chamois and rabbits. It is important to keep it clean and careful, the paths are steep and can cause slipping. I would also like to recommend a trip on Road 3199, the western entrance to Masada (via Arad). Although the road is long and narrow, the view from it is great. Enjoy!

It was hot but well worth the visit. Lots of amazing history, fantastic views, and a store with an extensive variety of cold drinks. Cable car ride to the top was exciting, although each gondola was crammed full of passengers so wear a mask if you wish to protect yourself.

I went up for the sunrise and going down at 7 (in June) was already super hot so idk how people do it during the day. Honestly I didn’t look at a lot of pictures what to expect up there. Drove up in complete darkness and got the light when I was 1/3 up the snake path and was amazed and it kept just getting more and more breathtaking. If you are hiking up keep in mind there is very little shade on the way up and up top they built a few shelters but most of it very open.

Peaceful. Tranquil. The weather was awesome and the historical stories about Masada and Herod were insightful. I love walks around the mountain and had a lovely walk up and down to clear my mind and get a different perspective on life. After the long walks I caught a local bus to the Red Sea to nap in the ocean.

A place to visit if you like historical archaeology. This place has history and a story. You have to take the cable carts to go up and down the hill ($22 pp and order on line before) Both down- and up you will find restaurants and toilets. The site is historic with a lot of stones and scorching hot. So bring some water and good walking shoes. Downhill there is a special Ahava shop (ask your lady) with lots of discount
