(Translated by Google) When you actually visit the facility, you can see that the underground facility (outer waterway pressure regulation water tank) is called an underground palace. There are four types of tour courses, but if you are not physically confident, we recommend that you choose the tour course (charge 1,000 yen / tax included) only for the [Outer drainage channel pressure control water tank]. After completing the reception at Ryu Q Building, walk about 200m on foot and go down the 116 steps (equivalent to the 5th-6th floors of the building) from the entrance to the basement. On the contrary, on the way back, you will climb this staircase. Of course, the guide staff Nogata will walk to the end, so you don't have to worry about being left behind, and you won't have to rush. At the time of my tour, the oldest person was said to be 78 years old. * I think there are individual differences, but I think it is possible for people in their 70s who are healthy. * I think it is possible for children around 4-5 years old. (It's just a personal opinion. If you are uneasy, it is better to consult with the staff at the reception. ) The impression that I actually saw the outer drainage channel pressure regulation water tank was "Big! ] A word. It is a recommended tour course because you can experience an extraordinary space for 1,000 yen / person. 【others】 (1) Since the humidity inside the pressure-regulating water tank is high and it is considerably lower than the outside air, it is better to bring a thin blouson or yakke for the tour from spring to autumn. ➁ Visitors can use the bicycle parking lot and bicycle parking lot free of charge. ③ There is a toilet for visitors in front of the Ryu Q building (on the bicycle parking lot side). There is a vending machine for drinking water next to the toilet, but there is no vending machine in Ryu-Q. ④ There is a coin locker for visitors in the Ryu Q building. There are stairs up and down, so it's best to go empty-handed when visiting. Also, it is safer to stop sandals and shoes with high heels. Sneakers are the best.

(Translated by Google) I visited the inside. It's just called "Underground Temple", and the inside is very wide and overwhelming. It was a 50-minute course, but I was fully satisfied. Cards and stickers will be distributed at the reception. It is a little lower than the temperature on the ground. Next time I will participate, I would like to visit the shaft etc.

A special place worth a visit. it is pretty cool down there even during the summer - a great place for heat relief. Pre-booking is needed and entrance fee has gone up from 500 yen to 650 yen. I drove there and there are plenty of parking space. The tour was quick and mostly in Japanese. The exhibit has English explanation though

You need reservations in advance and, reservations are subject to last minute cancelation due to weather. It took us two attempts to make the tour. Once you get in, the venue to massive and breathtaking, well worth a visit. It has to be seen to be believed.

This enormous subterranean facility situated between Showa,Tokyo and Kasukabe, Saitama is officially known as the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel or G-Cans Project. More commonly known as the Tokyo Underground Temple for its many appearances on Japanese television and films, the G-Cans Project is actually the world’s largest underground water diverting flood control system. Though located far from the actual Tokyo Metropolitan Area, this facility is actually responsible for protecting those millions of lives from the dangers of flooding that historically occurred during the heavy downpours that still happen today. Tours of this super specialized and extremely rare example of modern engineering are very popular and thus extremely difficult to reserve. You’ll likely have better luck trying to get a spot on one of the days the facility opens up to all on a first-come, first-served basis. Just get there as early as possible to get a spot, and expect long lines and vast crowds—bring snacks and drinks for the wait!

As many other reviews explain, visiting here is very dependent on the weather. Since it was made to help with flooding issues in the area, you cannot visit during rainy/bad weather. You also need a reservation in advance. They require an interpreter if you can't understand Japanese. It is definitely worth visiting if you are able! Probably best if you have a car. Such a cool experience - very literally when it is hot outside. Someone said it reminds them of the Mines of Moria. I would love to come back and do one of the more in-depth tours if possible.

Excellent facility tour. Friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff. Well worth the train trip from the center of Tokyo if you have time.

I had been meaning to make the trek here since I first learned about this tour via Atlas Obscura. I knew the route would be long and I was correct; from Tokyo to Minami-Sakurai station took me over two hours on four trains! Once at the station, there is a bus that will take you to the facility, but I decided to walk there by walking the gravel road along the river. I think the people I met along the way were surprised to see me! The tour itself was quite direct in that the tour guide explained the history, purpose, and workings of the entire overflow system prior to the descent to the "cathedral" itself. The guide is completely in Japanese, but there is a handy brochure and app available in English. The guided tour continued once the group arrived at the bottom of the cistern. We were given about 20 minutes to wander the area before we were herded back up the stairs. Things to note: • There are stairs and only stairs. Their height is roughly the equivalent of going down seven floors and then back up again. Know your limits and be prepared to feel some burn. • Only about 20% of the cistern floor is explorable. You will not be allowed to approach any of the intake or outlet cylinders. • There is a bus stop directly in front of both the station and the museum. They run about 2 per hour on two different schedule: M/W/F and Tues/Thur. Final thoughts: I am an architecture and infrastructure nerd so I really enjoyed learning about this feat of civil engineering. However, it takes a lot of effort to journey out to visit the facility from Tokyo so it might not be worth it to you.

Very impressive place. The handouts and explanations on the wall have English translations, but the guiding was only in Japanese.

Since there was a typhoon last week, the excursion course cancel excursions to the subterranean surface.

As impressive as it gets, the scale of this place is amazing!

Unusual experience and worthwhile doing. Tour (and safety instructions) are in Japanese only, so if you want to come along and don’t speak Japanese you just bring a translator/guide.
