Shree Kaal Bhairava temple is one of the main attraction of Basantapur Durbar Square & the second most visited place after Pashupatinath Temple at Kathmandu. Kaal Bhairava is a fierce form of Lord Shiva who is also called the God of Time and Death and one who destroys fear or one who is beyond fear. The statue is sculptured uniquely from a single stone. It's a place you shouldn't miss, If you are visiting Kathmandu.

Kal Bhairava statue is a gigantic 6 armed 12 ft tall stone idol dating back to 4 or 5th Century. Kal Bhairav is here in his fierce form, wearing a crown of skulls, eyes are widely open & fully round, half open mouth with visible teeth, earrings are snakes, serpents as a long garland & severed heads weaved on tiger skin for his skirt. He is holding a sword, trident, shield, severed heads & cup in his hands. He is fiercely standing above the sleeping 'Betal'. (Do not frightened from this forms,it is supposed to remove fear of devotees). His one hand is in a boons giving posture (Varad Mudra). This sculpture stands on an open yard because Bhairav is considered guardian of goddess Tulaja Bhawani & guards her sitting outside. As per legend king Pratap Malla had dug a pond. While excavating a canal to fetch water from Budhanilkantha to fill the pond, this idol was found underground in Raniwan. King picked it up & installed it here in the 17th Century . It is believed that Bhairav with his fierce form helps devotees to become fearless. भयहरणं च भैरव:. Devotees visit this temple to worship Kaal (काल) Bhairab to change bad time (दुखद काल) to a good time (सुखद काल). It is believed that people die if they speak false in front of this sculpture. So, this temple was honoured as the supreme court of Nepal for a long time. Bhairav is considered the incarnation of Bhagawan shiva : भैरव: पूर्णरूपोहि शंकरस्य परात्मन:। मूढास्तेवै न जानन्ति मोहिता: शिवमायया॥ when Lord Shankar becomes angry, he manifests as a Bhairav. The southface of Shivaling also considered as a Bhairav or Aghor. Kal Bhairav Astami is the main festival here.

Kal Bhairav is a grand temple located at Kathmandu Durbar Square in the religious complex of Hanuman Dhoka, dedicated to a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. In this form, the lord is depicted carrying the decapitated head of Shani, wearing an ornamental snake, tiger skin, and a ritual apron made of human bones. The place of worship is an open-air area in the complex and has a gigantic 12-foot tall idol of Kal Bhairav sculpted in the 6th century and is regarded as the largest in the world. The idol and the structures that surround it are made of stone and were carved in the 5th century. It was discovered by King Pratap of the Malla dynasty amidst paddy fields in the 17th century. Back in the time, people believed that anyone who would lie down in front of the idol would attain freedom from their lives. This may not be necessarily true. However, locals still continue worshipping this grand and fierce incarnation of Lord Shiva with all their devotion. Kal Bhairav is the terrifying avatar of Lord Shiva who is also called the Lord of Time and Death. He is worshipped by the Hindus as the guru of Lord Shani who is ruled by the planet Saturn and as Manjusri, Heruka, Yamantaka, and Vajrabhairava in Vajrayana Buddhism. The idol of Kala Bhairav is seen standing in a violent form, stepping over a dead body holding a decapitated head in one hand. According to a legend, Kal Bhairav had decapitated one of Lord Brahma's five heads and as punishment, was made to carry that head and roam around for many years till he was forgiven. This avatar of Lord Shiva is fierce and unforgiving. He is mostly associated with vetala (ghouls) and pisaca (ghosts). The name 'Bhairava' literally means a terrifying form that is not afraid of anything. Thus, he can protect his devotees. He is also believed to be the supreme one after Lord Vishnu and can create, sustain, and dissolve life on earth.

Kaal Bhairav, known as the god of death and justice is worshipped by both Hindus and Buddhists. According to ancient tales and mythologies, this statue was discovered by farmers in their farmland/fields and was established by King Pratap Malla in the Basantapur/Kathmandu Durbar Square. This statue then served as the place of justice as it was believed that whoever lies in front of Kaal Bhairav annihilates themselves to death.

I recently visited the Kal Bhairav Temple in Basantapur Durbar and had a mixed experience. On the positive side, the temple is an important destination for anyone interested in Hinduism or Nepalese culture. The temple is dedicated to Lord Kal Bhairav, a fierce form of Lord Shiva, and is known for its unique architecture and intricate carvings. The temple is also home to several other important shrines, including the Taleju Temple and the Kumari Ghar. However, the temple can be very crowded, especially during festivals like Dashain and Tihar. This can make it difficult to fully appreciate the beauty and significance of the temple. Additionally, the temple can be quite chaotic, with devotees chanting prayers and performing rituals. This may be overwhelming for some visitors, especially those who are not familiar with Hinduism or Nepalese culture. Overall, I would recommend the Kal Bhairav Temple to anyone who is interested in Hinduism or Nepalese culture. The temple is a unique and unforgettable destination that is well worth a visit. However, visitors should be prepared for crowds and chaos, and should plan their visit accordingly. Additionally, visitors should be respectful of the local culture and customs, and should be mindful of their impact on the environment.

Kaal Bhairab is believed as form of lord shiva who is called lord of time and death. This 12 feet tall sculpture is built in 6th century. The myth is believe that in those era criminals were given punishment in front of kaal bhairab. The criminals need to confess the mistake they have done by touching the toe of kaal bhairav during mallas period or they offer sacrifice of animal to kaal bhairav by chanting mantras. The devotees of kaal bhairav offers halwa and sweets in saturday. They put on black dress as a dress for Kaal bhairab. Most of the people visit this place on Saturday. It is the holy place of hindu. We can observe the laugh of kaal bhairab in sculpture.
