Nepal's Oldest hospital is named after the prime minister BIR Shumsher JBR. This hospital provides physical and surgical treatment. This government hospital has poor management System and is not clean as expected. Meanwhile this hospital is one of the best hospital in Nepal which provides you almost every test and facilities.

All are good but no system. The new building of Bir hospital is good so far . Service is cheap and best . It's fully equipped better than some good private hospitals. But elevator were not functuning since month long, general ward toilets are very dirty , cannot stay their for a minutes. Just one toilet for more than 200 patience in general ward. Toilets of any floor are in pathetic condition. So frustrating to see this this mess. Management team of hospitals seems totally incapable and may be bunch of idiots.

One of the oldest hospitals of nepal. New building, services and trauma centres have helped people a lot. Got there last time for vaccination, and happy to get quick service without much delay and crowd.

Bir Hospital, while known for its cost-effective services, unfortunately falls short in various crucial aspects. The lower pricing might attract many, but it comes at the cost of compromised service quality and cleanliness. One glaring issue is the hospital's cleanliness, which leaves much to be desired. The facilities are often dirty, which raises concerns about hygiene and the potential spread of infections. The lack of a proper system exacerbates the problem, leading to disorganization and confusion among patients and staff alike. Another significant drawback is the excessive overcrowding. Patients are often crammed into waiting areas, leading to long and uncomfortable wait times. This overcrowding can have a detrimental impact on the overall patient experience and may even compromise patient safety. Moreover, the behavior of the health insurance staff is often cited as a major concern. Patients encounter rudeness and unhelpful attitudes, which can be distressing during already trying times. Bir Hospital offers cost-effective healthcare, but it falls short in terms of service quality, cleanliness, organization, and staff behavior. The authorities need to address these issues urgently to ensure that patients receive the care and respect they deserve. Improving these aspects will not only enhance patient satisfaction but also contribute to better healthcare outcomes

This is by far the worst experience I got from any hospital. I went to Bir Hospital for PCR check due to emergency as it was near by from my home. The report came after 48hr and the reason they gave me was that they had no respective person to check the test in the lab for the time being and the test was done late, like seriously the hospital doesn't even care to fulfill their duty on time what so ever because earlier they told me the report will be sent within 24hr. Worst worst hospital ever in term of fast service

Bir Hospital is the oldest hospital of Nepal. This hospital was established in 1947 BS, under the name of contemporary Prime Minister Bir Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana. Initially it was a seven bed hospital with 5 staffs. Today it has a proud history of 125 years and the first hospital of Nepal wherethe practice of modern medicinecommenced.Till eighties services including gynaecology, paediatrics and psychiatry were available in this very hospital. With the evolvement of super specialtyand increasing workload in the limited premises these services were shifted to Indra Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah Maternity hospital Thapathali, Kanti Bal hospital Maharajgunja and Patan mental hospital Lalitpur respectively. This is a historical hospital as every modern medical service in the country has roots in this hospital. This is the first hospital where neurosurgery was started in the times whenCTscan was not around. In the field of modern cardiology Nepalโ€™s first case of angiography, cathlab and valve replacement were all done at Bir Hospital. Every senior doctor who was a pioneer in the field of modern medicine in Nepal like Dr. Mrigendra Raj Pandey, Dr. Anjani Kumar Sharma, Dr. Dinesh Nath Gongal, Dr. Shabitri Gurung, Dr. Dibyashree Malla, Dr Sudip Kumar Bhattacharya, Dr. Mohin Shah, Dr. Puskar Satyal, Dr. Ishor Lal Acharya, Dr. Dhrub Lal Singh, Dr. Dambar Bahadur Karki, Dr. Sachche Kumar Pahadi, Dr. Dharma Sharan Manadhar, Dr. Ram Prasad Pokharel, Dr. Yanta Mani Pradhan, Dr Ram Bhadra Adiga, Dr. LN Prasad, Dr. JP Rijal, Dr. Jwala Raj Pandey, Dr. Basant Lal Shrestha, Dr. Gopal Achary, Dr. Hemanga Dixit, Dr. Shankar Bahadur Shrestha, Dr. NB Amatya, Dr. Laxman Paudel hadstarted their careers in this hospital. These pioneers are the heroes and the legends of modern medicine in Nepal. Bir hospital is the central hospital where services were provided the royal family members in past. Similarly Bir hospital provided medical education to different levels of health personnel as per the needs of country. Starting with simple wound dressing and compounder trainingmiddle level health personneltraining for health assistants was started in 2014 BS, in the name of Civil Medical School. This training was continued till 2018 BS. Similarly, nursing education started in 2013 BS and Mrs Rup Kumari Gurung was the chief of nursing school. This hospital was used for the clinical practice by Institute of Medicine, Tribhuwan University, for their courses of Auxiliary Health Worker, Health Assistant and graduate medical education. In 2035/36 BS this institute was accredited by Royal college of Edinburgh as centre for training for fellowship in surgery and membership in Medicine. This was an era of commencement of postgraduate education in Nepal. From 2035 BS to 2050 BS no government scholarship was provided for postgraduate education in Nepal. There was a big gap between undergraduate and postgraduate doctors. It was realized that the post graduatemedical education should exist in Nepal only. This led to the formation of postgraduate medical education coordination committee (PGMECC) in 2051/52BS by the valley group of hospitals. In 2059/60 BS concept of National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) was born. National Academy of Medical Sciences was establishedin 2060 BS (2002 AD) and started course of MD and MS. Bir hospital is an embodied hospital of NAMS. NAMS has taken Maternity Hospital Thapathali, Kanti Children Hospital Maharajgunj, Nepal Army hospital, Patan Hospital and Nepal eye hospital as affiliated hospitals for the program. Under the memorandum understanding with these hospitals programs are running. Currently, this institute is enrolling around 100 MD, MS and MDS residents each year. Similarly superspecialty fellowship course on neurosurgery, Fellow of national academy of medical sciences (FNAMS), was started in 2061 BS (2004 AD). In addition, Doctorate of Medicine and Master of Chirurgery (DM, M.Ch) started in 2067 BS (2010 AD).

Though it's said to have good treatment and good doctors, the treatment process goes really slow. You are less likely to have thorough treatment until you have some 'aafno manche' in power and position. I have met multiple people who got ICU for their serious patients only when some political figures, bureaucrats approached the hospital's administration or doctors.

This hospital needs a good management. It has more that enough infrastructure and facilities to be the best Hospital in Nepal. The only problem is the management. The window numbering is terrible and disastrously bad. Ticketing system is absolutely bad. What would you expect? If the hospital provides token dispenser, what is the point of giving ticket to those who randomly go to window through line without caring the token system. The sitting area outside is filled with the poo of birds. The toilet on the ground floor is just a bad dream anyone would have in their entire life . While the main hospital service is good. The OPD starts before 9 am (around 8,40), although it is promised to be starting from 9am. (Most government hospital start this from 10am or later) While the checkup and report delivery is messed up. You can find emergency X-ray room in the OPD section of the building and OPD x-ray room in the cancer section and the report must be collected from another building located across the road, which is lot confusing.

Bir Hospital is the oldest and one of the busiest hospital. I like to visit here for my treatment. If we manage this hospital, it will be among the best hospital in Nepal. As we see the location, it is located at the center of Kathmandu city. History is important so, if you like to know this hospital is run by the National Academy of Medical Sciences, a government agency since 2003. Bir hospital especially provides medical and surgical treatments.

After admitting for 2 whole days they cancelled my operation, had to return all the supplies , they used the blood i had deposited in blood bank and replaced it and did not informed and the other hospital did not accept it. The doctors are like "aba astae xa k garnu" ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Had the most awful experience.
