A short walk from Thamel is Asan Bazaar - a vibrant and crowded area where the locals shop. Here you can find a variety of products from food, spice, clothing to electronics. Like most part of Kathmandu, the traffic in the area is crazy especially at the intersection where 5 different roads meet.

Asan (Newar: असं, Nepali: असन) (alternative names: Asan Tol असन टोल, Asan Twāh असं त्वाः) is a ceremonial, market and residential square in central Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. It is one of the most well-known historical locations in the city and is famed for its bazaar, festival calendar and strategic location. Asan has been described as one of the fine Newar examples of a traditional Asian bazaar. The Tuladhar, Maharjan, Shrestha, Bajracharya and Shakya castes make up most of the population. Six streets converge on Asan giving the square a perpetual bustle. The bazaar at Asan attracts shoppers from all over Kathmandu because of the tremendous variety of merchandise sold here, ranging from foodstuffs, spices and textiles to electronics and bullion. Asan is also one of the popular tourist spots in the city because of its architectural sights and charming ambiance. There are banks, restaurants and a post office. Two taxi stands and bus stops are situated on the eastern side

Very lovely place to shopping for the other 'world' style. Many choices, need to survey first, compare the price & bargain. Yes it's already cheap but you still can have more cheapest 😆😆

If you want to get a glimpse of one of the places the locals get their sundry supplies as well as for tourists that are bargain savvy may get a good deal then you may want to check this place out. Like a web Azan Bazar spreads out from its epicentre into many sidestreets & a myriad of alleys with every nook & cranny crammed with shops to tiny stalls. From spices to sarees, meat & fish to all manner of dried beans & lentils to vegetables to metalwork cookery sets too even the odd mousetrap maker enough to delight even the most hardcore of market fans. Sprinkled throughout are a healthy dose of small temples & shrines. As some reviewers noted its best to go during early morning as it is relatively less bustle.

An interesting local bazaar in Kathmandu where there are many shops selling all sorts of local products, handicraft, food, tea, coffee, spices. One can experience the local vibes and atmosphere of a busy Nepalese city here. Worth a visit. Be careful of the bikes and cars mostly with impatient drivers as all the streets are rather narrow.

Even though it is raining when we are roaming around the bazaar, we still enjoy it! The place are so colourful and vibrant. We bought a lot of beautiful souvenirs to support locals. It is our last day when we went and I feel so happy that we walk through out until we arrive at our hotel.

Asan is the most historically significant market in the entirety of Nepal located at the centre of Kathmandu Valley. It was a trade link connecting India-Tibet trade route for centuries, with the natives of Kathmandu : Newar people being the shopkeepers putting up stalls at the basement of their houses. Even today, it is one of the most popular walking tour sites in Kathmandu for the ambiance & atmosphere of the place, architecture of houses & temples, the narrow streets full of people, and the calm in chaos of the noises of people and honking of vehicles. Traditionally, shoppers from all over the valley were drawn to this very market place for unbeatable price, quality, availability and exclusivity of various products, though the supplies of goods and products have been decentralised in recent decades.

A market where you can get dried seafoods, various types of spices, clothes, local ornaments etc. This place is filled with crowd almost anytime while it is opened. One can grab quick bites of momos or any other street foods here. Going by car is tough because parking is the issue. There are few temples in this place which makes it worth visiting place, specially for foreigners.

Asan is a ceremonial, market and residential square in central Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. It is one of the most well-known historical locations in the city and is famed for its bazaar, festival calendar and strategic location. Asan straddles one of the two legendary India-Tibet trade routes that pass through Kathmandu. Because of this history, Asan has been one of the city's main marketplaces since ancient times. The trade route is diagonally aligned, and the section within the city extends from Kathmandu Durbar Square to Asan and to the northeast.

Asan Bazar is the oldest market in Kathumandu. It was interesting that each path has its own category to present. I liked grains, cereal, puja supplies, women' garment, and fruit juice. I also could find a few temples around the market. The mood is very lively and you can find what you want, definitely.

Asan Bazar is one of the oldest and most popular local markets in Nepal. The traditional houses, temples, small allies, vegetable stalls, and full of small shops around this area are eye-catching. This is one of the most crowded places in Kathmandu Valley because this place is known as the heart of the Kathmandu Valley.

My visit to Asan Bazar in Kathmandu was a sensory delight. The market buzzes with activity, presenting a vivid display of colors, scents, and sounds. It's a haven for shopping enthusiasts, offering a treasure trove of spices, textiles, handicrafts, and more. Navigating the market is an adventure in itself, with narrow lanes and an ever-changing array of stalls. The shopkeepers, with their warm smiles, add to the inviting atmosphere, ready to engage in friendly haggling over prices. The diversity of items available is remarkable, catering to both locals and tourists. From traditional souvenirs to everyday necessities, Asan Bazar has it all. However, the crowds can get overwhelming, especially during peak hours, so being prepared for that is essential. Overall, Asan Bazar is an authentic slice of Nepalese culture and commerce. It's an exhilarating experience, and I found some unique, memorable finds during my visit.

Asan Bazar is a historical market place started during Medieval era. This market was started as trade hub or a business center in the past where the buyers and sellers used to meet. Having the temple of goddess Annapurna at one corner gives the idea that the trade was basically of the food grains. Asan Bazar has a very popular proverb that "If you are not getting a better place to sale take it to Asan and if you did not find the goods you are thinking to buy go to Asan". This saying also , encouraged the buyers and sellers to meet for a trade which has to be done on Fair way unless the Goddess Annapurna will be disappointed and they will have scarcity of food grains otherwise . The old house on west of Annapurna Tempe is the old house where the Tibetan traders used to stay and do their trade.

You haven't visited Kathmandu if you haven't stroll around Ason Bazar. The old Kathmandu residential area filled with old and ethnic shops, items and people. No matter how much the capital modernizes itself, Ason Bazar is the same old as I had seen it in around 1997. Now in 2021 there are very few upgrades in the market. If you love crowd, color and hustle... let yourself lost in Ason Bazar.

A great local market in Kathmandu. Vegetables, meat, chicken, all kinds of dried beans, herbs, spices. As well as clothing, hardware, and all kinds of things. If you can't find it here or close by it may not exist. Worth the walk through if you're just here on a visit to check how the locals shop.

Cosmetics stuff is easy to find here at reasonable prices and usually at discounted rates, which I really like about this place, but due to the huge numbers of people passing through here, it results in a crowdy and exhausted environment.

Asan Bazar in Kathmandu is an absolute gem of a place. From the bustling streets filled with vendors selling everything from clothes to spices, to the colorful temples dotted around the area, there is so much to see and explore. One of the things that really stood out to me was the incredible energy of the market. The hustle and bustle of people going about their day, combined with the smells of exotic spices and the sounds of traditional Nepalese music, create an atmosphere that is truly unforgettable. But it's not just the energy of the market that makes it so special. The vendors themselves are some of the kindest and most welcoming people I have ever met. They are always willing to strike up a conversation and share their stories, and they truly make you feel like a part of the community. And of course, the shopping at Asan Bazar is second to none. From traditional Nepalese clothing to handmade crafts and souvenirs, there is something for everyone. And the best part? The prices are incredibly reasonable, making it easy to stock up on gifts and souvenirs without breaking the bank. Overall, I can't recommend Asan Bazar enough. It's a must-visit for anyone traveling to Kathmandu, and I can guarantee that you won't be disappointed.
