I returned to Pumpernickel after 35 years. The quality and service remained the same. Great breakfasts, great atmosphere and fast and professional service.

Definetely a cute and awesome place to come and enjoy:)) I must day - the pastries are very very good, but not excellent! Coffee was also good. Very sweet and helpfull staff which is just as important as the food! Quite cozy although the lighting could be softer, not so bright and white. I like that the music was soft and quite cozy comparing to other cafes that play loud, horrible music. Thank you for that :) Definetely could make the place a lot cozier with little effort - curtains, cuter napkin boxes on the table, pillows for the sofa on second floor. Over all - higher than avarage cafe to chill at in Thamel :)

Good friendly cafe in a great location. I went for the lemon pie, it would have been 5* but there wasn't much filling only a tasty base filled with lemon cream. I still enjoyed and the coffee was perfect strength for me.

A good place, if you you want to work on your computer and have a coffee and cake on your "desk" 🙂 They have an upper floor, where it's quiet and you can be in an peaceful atmosphere, taking a break from the busy and loud Kathmandu. Unfortunately the prices are high compared to other places, which also offer a nice environment and products. And they already close at point 6pm.

Lovely cafe with upstairs area facing the end of Mandala St, away from the hustle and bustle of Thamel. Ordered the English Breakfast set, which came with thick slices of freshly baked bread, watermelon juice and eggs/bacon/mushrooms executed with care. Cappuccino was also up to standard! Highly recommend.

The Pumpernickel Bakery offers a relaxing atmosphere, lots of seating, open space, and delicious coffee. I didn’t try any of the desserts, but everything looked very tasty and affordable. They offer free WiFi, lots of coffee and food options, and great vibes. You should definitely check out the Pumpernickel Bakery.

The reference bakery for years, after a session of absence following the COVID, it reopened for our greatest happiness and remains the reference of the good bread and other delicacies such our good French croissant but not that with marbled cake, the classic apple pie, the cinnamon roll or vanilla! On the spot or to take away.

If you are looking for a cozy place with light and delicious food, this is the place! Pleasant atmosphere, amazing staff, service above expectations and the food, simply wow. Indulgent breakfasts, delicious sandwiches, fresh breads and indulgent pastries. European feeling in the center of Thamel

Firstly must say that just loved the ambience. Quite cozy and elegant. However, now regarding the dish I had which was the cheesecake, there is little good to be said. Starting with the plate on which it was served, it was slightly dirty with much marks on it. Likewise, the cheesecake I had was extremely dry and difficult to enjoy. Lacking in flavours. Truly need to work on it for better opinions.

Wow. Where to start? I absolutely love this place. If you are looking for an European-style bakery this is the place to be in Kathmandu. The baked goods are fresh daily and mostly served warm giving them a feeling of being in a French boulangerie. The coffee is amazing too, great beans, great roast, what more can I say. Come see for yourself!

8 Oct 2017. A busy place where the tourists come to have bread, pastries, coffee/tea and food. As place is packed, service is lacking, cleanliness is below average. There is a outdoor area which can sit about 20 people.

Have visited the bakery numerous times over the years. Yes it is basically a bakery with coffee options, not much more. Price is reasonable though the BLT is a bit pricey for what it offers. You get better value from say, Himalayan Java. Good for breakfast or snack with inside seating or the backyard (a bit unkempt). Being in the midst of busy Thamel, it provides respite from the chaos. Can be quite busy.

My favorite place for breakfast and coffee in Katmandu! The coffee was awesome, definitely best quality I have found as of late and the menu/bakery has a good selection on offer. Staff are friendly and welcoming as the Nepalese normally are :)

Delicious goods! Would have given 5 stars but the guy behind the register could use some training in customer service (a "good morning" and a smile would have made me feel more welcome)

Pumpernickel has been one our family's favourite breakfast places in Thamel for years. Staff is super helpful, everything is very clean and food is tasty. We are little disappointed that garden is gone.

The name raises expectations, and the place does not disappoint. If you're craving for authentic Bavarian/Austrian food, especially breads, cakes, and pastry, THIS is the place to go, not just in Kathmandu, but whole South Asia. Clean, cozy, and excellent food quality. I've been there many times, and make it a MUST-stop on all my visits to Kathmandu. The owners are super-friendly, too. Just be a bit patient during rush hours.

Excellent service and supreme sourdough breads and sandwiches. The atmosphere is very pleasant. But for those of you who have been over the years coming to Kathmandu, the reforms they implemented made the café indeed rather casual and espacious now, but sadly destituted of the its former magnificent internal garden.

Got a slice of Tiramisu cake. It wasn't very good. Probably should've gotten Black Forest. Has WiFi, good music. I'm sure it's a nice coffee shop.

The bread looks great and tastes good. But if you're with friends and you would like to eat together, you might want to search for another place. After my partner had long finished his sandwich, I asked when mine was coming. Apparently the staff members thought it was very funny that I still hadn't got my sandwich. They first had a good laugh over it,l and exchanged some Nepali conversation before one of them took the effort to actually go to the kitchen and make my sandwich. When I commented this is not okay, he said: only one minute. And then it took again almost 10 minutes for my sandwich to finally arrive. With a 'sorry ma'am'.

Amazing bakery in Kathmandu. It was one of the best places we went for coffee and food in the city. Everything we ordered was really good. The portions are big and you can see that the products are of good quality. The bread looked fresh and was always crunchy. The staff is friendly and the cozy ambience invites you to relax and take a break in between city explorations

Great little coffee place, best way to escape the Thamel chaos! Must be one of the very few places with real desserts in the area. They also have a little garden where you can sit.

  • 5/5 Robyn P. 4 years ago on Google
Super cute bakery with delicious baked goods, breakfast items, and sandwiches. The service is slow compared to Western standards, but average for Kathmandu. Charming courtyard, great way to start the day.

A cute cafe! The staff was welcoming and the food was great! We didn't try any of the pastries (aside from the banana bread) so I'm not sure how good they are, but our food was delicious!

Nice setting in popular area of Kathmandu. Thier bakery are nicely presented and taste pretty good. The total let down for me was Iced Latte. Costs 225 rupees but tasted so bad. I couldn't taste any coffee in it. Shame..

Most impressive thing was the wifi, it’s free for customers and was super fast!! Coffee was great and there are variety of bakery and pastries. I missed Starbucks so bad, but this place saved my life :)

A great place if you have a craving for freshly baked bread like croissants, cinnamon bun, spinach quiches and american style breakfast. I ordered the BLT croissant and vanilla frappe and bought some bread for breakfast. The restaurant is in Thamel and has a really nice vibe to it. However it can be quite pricey compared to local food.

If you’re in Kathmandu and looking to have an early morning English breakfast look no further. Serving freshly made breads, sandwiches, juices and coffee it attracts a lot of tourists who become regulars for the authentic flavours.

Banana bread tasted sooo on point… And the lady (manager perhaps?) was super friendly and polite. They were open on the biggest holidays in Nepal. The bakery definitely deserves its rating.

Pretty good WiFi connection that stays on even when electricity cuts out. Also has sockets located around and enough seating area. Cappuccino wasn't amazing (came in a huge mug), but banana lassi was alright.

Overrated, delayed service or no service and uniquely bad customer service. 1st time we went there for brkf, they had a huge group and said that the breakfast will take atleast 30 mins to get prepared. No worries, we left.. Understandable! 2nd time we went there after a week, they had very few guests. We sat down gave our order of 1 avocado sandwich and 1 American breakfast. The server came and gave us black tea and thats about it. We waited 30 minute or more but no food came to us. I went to ask the lady about our order but no one had any clue. They said it will take a while. But a while maybe 30 mins more again. So we left disappointed again. I feel like they treat us much less than the foreigners maybe? But we are gonna pay the same bill, right ? I am not gonna recommend it to my friends for breakfast.

A local here wanted to order a cake for a birthday They don't make it to go here... And when I said I'd pay extra...for them to make one because I liked the product here they politely showed me the door ... Not one star worth but nevertheless still a really good eye opening experience... 10/10 not for the locals only tourists to visit and get scammed...

One of many places catering for westerners in Thamel. Very friendly staff but the grilled cheese sandwich and cinnamon scroll were a little underwhelming. A reminder that sticking to the local cuisine is always best in Nepal

The taste of the croissant is still lingering in my mouth. It was delicious. The ambiance of the place is great and the staff as well as the owners are super friendly.

So delicious! I couldn’t choose between a chocolate croissant or the cinnamon bun… so I had both! I came back a few days later for the tuna sandwich on ciabatta bread. All of the food was great, as was the coffee. A lovely place, friendly staff, comfortable environment. :)

I ate there 2 years ago when I visited Nepal. My thoughts are with you now during this time of tragedy.

  • 2/5 Manasi P. 1 year ago on Google
I visited this place for bakery items and it was very disappointing. I had cheesecake, brownie, chocolate croissant and a small cake, all of them didn't taste freshly made. The chocolate croissant had little to no chocolate. Brownie was dry and tasteless. Cheesecake was okay! On top of the food, their service needs a lot of improvement. There was only one server who missed our orders and kept apologizing. For a place which has invested on its ambience, service should also be a top priority. They also don't accept online payment which is very weird in today's time. We normally don't carry a lot of cash and for a medium sized cafe in thamel, it was unusual.

The scent of baked good is so good as I entered the bakery. Ambience is cozy and the owner is welcoming. I loved the cheese croissant I had.
