The historical palace area of Nuwakot located at 76 km far west-north of Kathmandu has been regarded as an important place since ancient time. Before 1744 AD, nepal was devided into numerous tiny States. In order to build a single strong nation, Kind Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha led the unification campaign from this region. During that time, Nuwakot as a colony of Kantipur (Kathmandu) was regarded as the western main gate to enter the valley. This place was also popular as the main route for trade with Tibet.

Not worth chosing as a travel destination itself. Under re-construction after the damage done by 2015 earthquake. Not open for visitors (as of 2022) Detailed: Nuwakot Durbar (Palace) is a palace built by the first King of the Kingdom of Nepal, Prithivi Narayan Shah in the 18th century. This place has historical significance as it was a major landmark from where he continued his battles against the little states and kingdoms (including present time Kathmandu valley) and went on to conquer all 54 states of Nepal and completed the unification of Nepal. The palace was made with Nepalese architecture and is located at the top of a hill in Bidur, Nuwakot which is believed to be very strategic construction for its defence against possible treats from other states and Kingdoms. Nuwakot was a very important state for Prithivi Narayan Shah and his troops as it was between Gorkha (His own inherited Kingdom) and the Kathmandu valley consisting of 3 powerful states; Bhaktapur, Kantipur (modern Kathmandu) and Lalitpur.

Nuwakot has become a more accessible destination from Kathmandu with the Tokha road shortening the journey by almost half. The palace is undergoing reconstruction, and new hotels are emerging around Bidur and Battar. Thematic resorts and restored old houses enhance the appeal of Nuwakot. Positioned midway between Kathmandu and Dhunche in Rasuwa, it serves as a gateway to the Gosaikunda trek and the Langtang region. The strategic location and recent developments make Nuwakot an enticing destination.

I was lucky to visit on a public holiday. The place was absolutely packed! Nuwakot is not that well-known in Nepal, but for a time it was actually the capital of the county. Who knew!? You should definitely check it out. There are some temples and beautiful views of the countryside since it’s located up on the side of a small mountain. Unfortunately the Chinese were renovating it, and pulled out without completing due to COVID, so some of the architecture is covered with scaffolding. But don’t let that distract you from the history and the wonder!

Amazing place. Easily accessible by a wide blacktopped road from Nuwakot's district headquarter Bidur. Uphill adventure is great. The palace is under construction due to earthquake in 2015. Beautiful memories of Nepalese 18th century king are reflected in woods. Peaceful place near Kathmandu and can be completed in single day. I recommend it to visit once in your life

This is a historical landmark of great importance which reflects the cultural and architectural aspect of ancient times. The durbar in this area was built by late king Prithvi Narayan Shah in the 18th century. The area is about 900 m above the sea level. This place is accessible with vehicles. There are some hotels and grocery hotels to buy foods. Being on the top of the hill, a panoramic view of surrounding green hills, Bidur bazaar, Trishuli river, Tandi river and mountains can be seen from here.

This place holds great historical significance. It's under renovation now, anyways the place is beautiful. The palace was built during the regime of King Prithivi Narayan Shah in 18th century and considered as the important landmark in the history of Nepal. 2015 earthquake has damaged the interior of palace but the visitors can still roam around durbar area.

A beautiful and historic place. Sadly it is still under reconstruction. The reconstruction has not been completed yet even after almost 7 years. If you are going to this place from Kathmandu, please go via Thankot-Galchhi. The road condition is pathetic via Kakani.

During that time, Nuwakot as a colony of Kantipur (Kathmandu) was regarded as the western main gate to enter the valley. This place was also popular as the main route for trade with Tibet. Making the Nuwakot hill as the main fort including other eight forts- Belkot, Bhairabkot, Kalikot, Malakot, Dhuwankot, Pyaskot, Simalkot and Salyankot in its sourrounding area, collectively was named as ‘Nawakotta’ (nine forts). So it is believed that ‘Nuwakot’ was derived from Nawakotta. Due to the influence of Kantipur, different places, rest houses, dabalis, temples and stupas of archeological significance were built and various cultural customs were practised in Nuwakot during Malla and Shah periods which still have been observed with pride. Most popular Saat Tale Darbar (Seven storey palace) was built by Prithvi Narayan Shah by evicting labourers from Lalitpur in 1762 and still it is regarded as a model of architecture. This used to be tropical place and it is notable that the King Rana Bahadur Shah met the British representative Mr. William Kirkpatric at this place in 1793 just after the war between Nepal and China. Just east-southern side of Saat Tale Darbar, here is a west facing palace made of oily bricks, called Rangamahal. It was built as a recreational spot for the three Malla Kings of Kantipur Valley. There are may dabalis and Resthouses which were built with religious and social purposes. Cultural practices of Malla period continues to be the main attraction for tourists in this area. Some of the cultural festivals observed even today are Bhairabi Jatra or Sindure Jatra, Narayan Jatra, Gai Jatra, Shipai Jatra, Devi Jatra, Lakhe dance, Fulpati and Krishna Janmastami etc.

Firstly, the road to Makwanpur Durbar was amazing. One of the best roads that I have traveled recently. ✅ The Durbar area was not much as it was closed for renovation, hopefully it will reopen after 3 to 4 months. Apart from the 9 storey Durbar, there is a Durga temple 🙏 and few old buildings as well as few restaurants around there, not much. But travel wise it will be non tiring experience. Must visit once!!

Nuwakot Durbar is a captivating ancient palace, steeped in rich historical significance. Nestled amidst a picturesque landscape, the regal structure is a testament to the architectural brilliance of its time. Surrounded by a myriad of temples, each exuding its own unique charm, the site offers a mesmerizing glimpse into Nepal's cultural tapestry. The intricate detailing of the palace, coupled with the timeless allure of the surrounding temples, creates an immersive experience for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. The palpable sense of history within the walls of Nuwakot Durbar adds a layer of fascination to the visit, making it more than just a visual spectacle. While exploring the grounds, one can't help but feel transported to a bygone era, where the echoes of centuries-old stories resonate through the courtyards and corridors. The temples, with their ornate carvings and spiritual ambiance, contribute to the overall aura of serenity and reverence. However, it's worth noting that the preservation efforts and accessibility of certain areas could enhance the overall visitor experience. Despite this, Nuwakot Durbar stands as a living testament to Nepal's rich cultural heritage, inviting all who visit to immerse themselves in the tapestry of history woven into its very stones.

Its under construction as of Dec 2022. Even though it is historical and important landmark for us (Nepali), it feels lack of attention from the Authorities. Proper management and quick renovation is highly recommended.
