If you like architecture, temples this is a must visit. The temple is magnificent. You will immerse yourself into each aspect , the pillars, the roof, the carvings the temple layout… it’s truly worth experiencing and exploring. Do take time out and immerse yourself in the olden times. The place was not crowded on a Friday we visited but even if it is it’s worth. It’s a large complex, have a great visit. 🙏Gratitude to you for reading this review, appreciate a 👍🏾 for the same.

There is a 14th-century temple near Kolarmma with no admission fees. The interior is well-kept and clean, showcasing captivating architecture and intricate carvings. The serene atmosphere is undisturbed by crowds, with only a few visitors. However, the temple requires urgent maintenance due to visible signs of deterioration.

Located at about 2 kms from Kolar bus stand , autos will charge Rs 40-50 from Kolar bus stand to this temple Temple is beautiful and maintained well. Not crowded , this is a temple one can add to their itinerary when one travels from Bengaluru to Tirupati. Temple carvings especially in Kalyana mantap are excellent. Entry into kalyana mantap is prohibited. Did not find any foot wear keeping place near this temple. Footwears have to be kept at entrance on the road itself. This temple is less than five minutes walk from another old temple , kollaramma temple. For travel/food pictures and information plz follow my insta account. Insta id: @shenoypradeep

This Chola built beautiful temple with marvellous architecture has Lord Shiva as the deity. It has stunning and impressive carvings and you can really feel the positive energy. But really sad to see the state of our ancient temples, idols missing, broken, boards hanging and unnecessary extra fittings ruining the look of the temple Just 5 minutes, walking distance is another beautiful Kolarama temple .

The Someshwara temple, situated in Kolar town of Karnataka state, India, is an ornate 14th century Vijayanagara era Dravidian style construction. Someshwara, another name for the Hindu god Shiva is the presiding deity in the temple.

Was quite surprised to see the temple located very close to a residential area. That being said, there was hardly any crowd. The place is serene and has a calming effect. It is open till 12.30 in the afternoon and the opens again at 5pm. We got in at 12.20 and were able to offer prayers.

Very nice place to visit. Lots of history is there. The site is under ASI. The area is under renovation now. You can spend a quality time here. Not so crowded or gathering is there. Avoid sunny days. There is no entry fee or parking fee. Visiting time is 1 hour. Not so popular among local people. So it is less crowded.

Old temple near to kolarmma. It's a 14th century temple. No entry fees. Neat and cleanliness is maintained inside. Architecture, carvings are really spell bound. Very peaceful and it's not at all crowded. You will hardly find some people inside. Maintenance is much needed as it's already broken.

Kolar is located 68 km from the city of Bangalore, on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway. Kolar boasts of a rich history with the fortresses and temples built under the reign of several dynasties. Someshwara Temple is located in the heart of the Kolar region and is one of the famous temples in this town. The temple was built by the Cholas who ruled this region in the 11th century who were then dethroned by the Chalukyas. The temple was later expanded by the Vijayanagara Empire and is a fine example of the Vijayanagara style of architecture. The carvings on the inner pillars of the temple have an international connection which depicts the importance and value of trade to the King.

It's beautiful, serene and an architectural marvel. Built during the Vijayanagara era, Chola dynasty, the carvings and the detailing are so skillfully done, just standing there in the premise, took us through an era - 1000s of years back, and the very fact that it has stood the test of time - is mind boggling and can't be expressed in words - needs to be experienced first hand. Must visit, if in and around Kolar.. Har Har Mahadev 🔥

Lovely place to visit. Esp for people who are interested in culture, history. The temple is open in the evening at 5pm. We went at 4pm and there were hardly anyone. So was good to take few shots and enjoy the sculptures. It's clean inside the premises. Tank could have been maintained better. It can be visited while you drive down from Avani Betta.

Has great carvings, though under ASI pooja is being performed. The main entrance is some what blocked with sand and construction material as a retaining wall is under repairs. Overall the temple has some nice pillars and there is a fully carved beautiful stone Mandap with ornate pillars.

Beautiful shiva temple in Kolar. It's an ancient temple built by the Cholas who ruled this region in the 11th century. The temple was later expanded by the Vijayanagara Empire and is a fine example of the Vijayanagara style of architecture. The carvings on the inner pillars of the temple have an international connection which depicts the importance and value of trade to the King. You can find pictures of Romans, Chinese and other country people on the pillers. The temple is every architect’s delight considering the beauty of Dravidian architecture. The huge gopura on the entrance stands testimony to the hand of the Cholas in the construction of this temple. The temple has heavy Prakara walls, a Kalyana Mantapa (Wedding hall), a Mukha Mandapa with massive pillars, a Vasantha Mantapa (Marriage Podium) and a shrine for goddess Parvati Devi. The Kalyana Mandapa has 64 – 16 sided pillars, a few depicting men, riding horses and others represent mythological stories. The carvings on the pillars bear influence of the European, Chinese and Thai style. The Kalyana Mantapa’s top portion depicts a Chinese style of architecture and the temple tower boasts of stucco figures. Apart from this, the Vijanagara inscriptions are found on the walls of the yagashala and temple store room which date back to the 15th century A.D. The door frame of this magnificent temple is carved in pure Vijanagara style with the dwarapalas (guards). There is a granite bull carved at the entrance of the temple. The temple also has a large stepped tank in Vijayanagar style called Kalyani.

One more chola dynasty temple.Shiva is the main deity. Almost zero crowd when I visited. Walkable distance from kolaramma temple. The architecture is exactly the same as the someshwara temple in indiranagar Bangalore. This temple has the potential to pull crowds in large numbers if presented properly.Honestly speaking I would like it to like this...serene quite with no visitors....you actually feel you have come to a temple.

(Translated by Google) Kolar's earliest history has been compiled by Fred Goodwill, Superintendent of the Wesleyan Tamil Mission and Kolar Gold Fields, Bangalore, and his studies have been published in several journals. The West Ganga made the Kolas their capital and ruled Mysore, Coimbatore, Salem and Travancore. In the 13th century, Bhavanandi composed his book Nannool on Tamil Grammar. Under the Cholas, it was reported that King Sridhar Kora (reigned 970-985) built the Renuka Temple and founded the city of Kolhapuram. Veera Chola, Vikram Chola and Rajendra Chola I built stone structures with inscriptions on Avani, Mulbagal, Sita Betta and elsewhere. Chola inscriptions documenting the rule of Aditya Chola I (871-907), Raja Raja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I of Kolar refer to Kolar as Nikarili Cholamandalam and Jayam Konda Chola Manadalam. Inscriptions of Rajendra Chola I can also be found at Kolaramma Temple. During the Chola rule, many Shiva temples were built in Kolar, including the Someshwara and Shri Uddhadeshwari temples in Marikkuppam village, or the temple of Ishwara in Rugampete and the Shiva temple in Madiwala. The Chola rule of Kolar lasted till 1116. The inscriptions have been ignored, and some are devastating. Kolar became part of the Hoysala Empire in 1117; In 1254 it was given to Ramanathan, one of the two sons of King Someshwar. The Hoysalas were defeated by the Vijayanagara Empire that ruled Kolar from 1336 to 1664. During this period, the Sri Someshwara Temple at Kolar was built. In the 17th century, the Maratha regime was part of Kolar Shahji's Jagir for 50 years, followed by 70 years of Muslim rule. In 1720 it became part of the province of Sirah, Fouzdar in the province of Fateh Mohammed (Hyder Ali's father). Kolar was then ruled by the Marathas, the Nawabs of Kudapa, the Nizam of Hyderabad and Haider Ali. It was under British rule from 1768 to 1770, Hyder Ali after a brief Maratha rule. In 1791, Lord Cornwallis captured the Kolar and returned it to the Kingdom of Mysore in the 1792 peace treaty. In the Kolar region, inscriptions record the reigns of the Mahawalis (Banas), Pallavas and Vaidumbas. Benjamin Louis Rice recorded 1,347 inscriptions in the 10th volume of his Epigraphia Carnatica in the Kolar District. Of the inscriptions, 422 are in Tamil, 211 in Telugu and the rest in Kannada. Sri Someshwar Mandir is having so peaceful environment. Very first time I visited this Mandir, it is awesome. No doubt of Indian ancient architecture, it was so beautiful entire premises a very peaceful even though people are there but you can feel the peace in that environment. I try to meditate with Shambhavi mudra and the experience was so great. Inside the Mandir Shivling is so beautiful one can just see it and keep involved. This Mandir is from 14th century, they are taking very good care of it. One should visit this Mandir and experience the peacefulness the beauty of ancient architecture all the sculptures on the pillars, Nandi ji, everything. Shivling! I don't have words to explain, very beautiful.

This one is a very old template with Vijayanagara architecture. As par the priest there, one part of the temple was made by Chola dynasty and rest was made by king of Vijayanagara. If you have visited Hampi and liked it, you would certainly like this small replica of those temples.

What a beautiful place this is!! It is 14th century architecture and the calmness it provides is just amazing! It was a hot Saturday afternoon that I visited here. In fact I reached Kolaramma temple - and I was told that to visit Someshwara temple and then be back here. Which I followed to the T 😊 and I am glad that I did!! Temple is very nicely maintained and you can walk around the temple complex. There are places that are marked across for easier understanding. There is a plaque outside the temple which gives important facts to be read. Post prayers and walking around - I just sat there and relaxed. It was amazingly peaceful. Amazing place and a must visit for sure 😍

A remarkable little known 13th century Shiva Temple in the Vijayanagara architectural style. Complex is well maintained but littered in corners with single use plastic. Does not attract a lot of footfall other than the local populace and the occasional visitor from nearby areas. An unusual feature is the Parvati Temple with Nandi seated outside in the same fashion as we observe for Shiva temples. Main deity faces East while others face North.

We reached a while after 5 PM. Pujaris made an aarti for us from their other task. It was quiet at that time. This place is easy to reach from road. Around 10 cars can be parked in front of the temple. This is newer compared to Kolaramma temple which is the temple of the presiding deity of Kolar. There is no water source outside the temple for washing your feet or hands. I could see young Pujaris working here who may be getting trained in the rituals now. Overall, it's worth a single day trip from Bengaluru.

This is a 700 year old temple. Due to its stone masonary, it appears it will stand firm for another 1000. It is one and a half drive from Bangalore, with a pretty good highway inbetween. I visited a couple of times. There were few people. The place is tranquil. One can sit in the courtyard and let things slow down. There is a Nandi bull idol, who is known for taking your wishes to lord Shiva, provided you whisper them in to right ear.

I have no words to express how beautiful the temple is. I really do not know the words to choose to express the beauty. The carvings are just so perfect. The calmness inside the temple makes you feel the world is so beautiful inspite of all the problems that you may be going through. Every sculpture out there makes you proud of those ancient legends who lived ages ago. The present temple management is good too. The purohit was friendly enough and explained the importance of the temple. Just loved overall experience that i had. Please visit this temple while on your way to Kotilingeshwara temple and this temple is super near to Kolaramma temple which is one more the best of its kind.

In some points, there are very narrow pathways inside caves which some people could find troublesome. A good viewpoint at the top where one could have a picn...
